Open Letter to Zack Polanski – Congratulations on Declaring That You Are an Anti-Zionist – Now is the Time to Show That You Mean It

If You Oppose Zionism's Genocidal Ethnic Cleansing Project You Must Support the Zionism is Racism Motion & Oppose My Expulsion

Polanski Declares that he's an anti-Zionist at the Board Of Deputies Hustings

Dear Zack,

Your clear and explicit declaration at the Board of Deputies hustings that you are an anti-Zionist is to be welcomed. I unreservedly support your candidature at the forthcoming Holborn & St. Pancras by-election and I hope that you are the successor to the detested war criminal Keir Starmer who slithered away like the snake he is.

Whereas I supported George Galloway at the Rochdale by-election in 2024 I am firmly opposed to his divisive and reactionary candidacy in this election.

Polanski opposes 'divisive' Zionism is Racism motion

However I am also aware that after winning the leadership of the Green Party [GP] so decisively last year, you equivocated on the question of Zionism and appeased the old Green Establishment of Caroline Lucas and co. So the question is whether you are prepared to break with the GP's support for NATO and imperialism?

The Daily Mail's Proprietor Viscount Rothermere waxed lyrical about the 'youthfulness' and dynamism of the Nazis

In your Zeteo interview you stated that ‘Zionism means different things to different people.’ But that is true of any ideology. Do you think that the Nazis came to power promising to wipe out all Jews? On the contrary they played down anti-Semitism.

The Nazis were seen as a vigorous, young movement that was going to do away with the old corrupt politicians and abolish unemployment. People supported them not because of anti-Semitism but their economic promises and anti-communism.

South Africa had petty apartheid, which Israel didn't have until the advent of colonisation of the West Bank where there are now roads for Jews only - they don't have signs but that is the reality

Apartheid in South Africa was not defended by its supporters as a way of exploiting and oppressing Black people but as "separate development". The Nationalists argued that South Africa was not one nation, but a multitude of ‘nations’ (Afrikaners, English-speaking whites and various Black ethnic groups).

The Apartheid leaders claimed that forcing different cultures to integrate would lead to friction and that each group should live independently within its own territory. This is no different to what Zionism argues. Jews need their own state.

Israeli Labor leaders Ben-Gurion & Golda Meir. Ben-Gurion was the architect of the Nakba & Gold Meir was famous for saying that 'It was not as though there was a Palestinian people in Palestine considering itself as a Palestinian people and we came and threw them out and took their country away from them. They did not exist,”

The Israeli Labor Party’s support for a two state solution was posited on the need to separate Jews from Palestinians in order to maintain a Jewish majority in Israel. Only then could Israel be both democratic and Jewish. In the words of Israel’s main opposition leader, Yair Lapid:

My principle says maximum Jews on maximum land with maximum security and with minimum Palestinians.

You went on to say that what the present Israeli government is doing is clearly racist thus implying that previous Israeli Labor governments weren’t racist. But this is not true. There is nothing that Netanyahu and Likud have done that the Labour Zionists didn’t do before them. The right-wing Zionists are just more honest.

The Nakba wasn’t organised by the Revisionists but the Labour Zionists. It was primarily the ‘left’ Zionist militias, Haganah and Palmach, who were responsible for the massacres and forcible expulsion of Palestinians in 1947/8 and throughout the 1950s.

The Apartheid structure of the Israeli state, with its confiscation of Arab land and apartheid legislation like the Absentee Property Law was created by Labour not Likud. The concept of ‘Jewish’ Labour, i.e. violently picketing Jewish employers who employed Arabs was a Labour Zionist campaign in the 1920s and 30s.

The expansion of Israel into the West Bank was under the Labour Zionists. The first settlements were created under the Israeli Labor Party and indeed the founders of the Greater Israel movement were stalwarts of the Labour Zionist movement like Yitzhak Tabenkin, Israel Galili and Yigal Allon. [See Between Land and State – ‘Greater Land of Israel’ according to Tabenkin and the United Kibbutz Movement]

Yes many Jews see Israel as a refuge from anti-Semitism but as the Jews of Argentina, 3,000 of whom were murdered, found out in the 1970s, the Israeli state will offer no protection against an anti-Jewish regime with which it is on friendly terms and doing business with the Israeli state. Israel preferred a billion dollar trade with a neo-Nazi Junta to saving Argentinian Jews from the torture chambers.

Just as in 1920 thousands of Ukrainian Jews fleeing the pogroms were turned away by the Zionists who pressurised the British not to admit them.

Zionism is not what is in the head of some fragrant young Zionist but what Zionism does. Jewish or Zionist justifications for Zionism are about as valid as the defence of Apartheid in South Africa by its supporters.

Zionism is not a Jewish but a Christian idea. Zionism is the ideology of the Israeli state. It explains why Palestinian children are called ‘little snakes’ by former Israeli 'Justice Minister' Ayelet Shaked, legitimate targets for IDF snipers. Zionism, in all its flavours is first and foremost a movement of Jewish Supremacy, ethnic cleansing and now genocide.

Yes Zionism has had many different strands and currents but all of them were united on the need for a Jewish Supremacist state.

Supporters of South African Apartheid were divided between Jan Smuts and DaniĆ«l Malan. Both however agreed on White Supremacism. The Nazi party too was divided between Hitler and the ‘left’ represented by Gregor and Otto Strasser. However both wings agreed on anti-Semitism.

One of your objections to the ZIR motion was ‘safeguarding Jewish people’. This is wrong. Supporting Palestinians and opposing Zionism does not threaten Jewish safety. If anything increases anti-Semitism it is the Zionist claim that all Jews support the genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza.

If some Jewish Greens are Zionists then far more are anti-Zionist. If you are a Zionist then you are supporting a racist, apartheid state. Why would such a person want to be in the GP?

Jewish people are not under attack, their homes are not being bombed, their children killed, their doctors tortured and raped to death. When the question of Palestine is raised it has nothing to do with Jews. To imply that support for Palestinians threatens the safety of Jews is to buy into the Zionist narrative. Israel is not a ‘Jewish’ state other than in a racial supremacist sense.

Those Jews at the Board of Deputies hustings who shouted that there is no genocide were no different from neo-Nazi holocaust deniers. They are racist monsters and should be treated as such.

The Jewish racists who heckled you would change their tune if it was 20,000 Jewish children who had been murdered. Jewish people in Britain are not experiencing anti-Semitism but a reaction to the carnage most of them support.

Allegations of ‘anti-Semitism’ are nothing more than a rationale to support the Zionist agenda. Jews in Britain who declare they are Zionists are holding hands with the far-right and people like Tommy Robinson, a self-declared Zionist.

You raised the red herring about someone who opposes genocide & apartheid but is a member of a Zionist synagogue. You said they should not be treated differently or made to feel unwelcome. I agree. People who are members of Zionist synagogues should not be held responsible for the politics of their synagogue if they oppose Zionism.

Your second objection was about supporting a single Palestinian state. You even said that there was ‘something imperialist about this’. This is untrue. Palestine today is already one state. An apartheid state. There is no possibility of a two state solution nor is it desirable since it would leave an apartheid Jewish state in place. What is required is that there are equal rights for all the inhabitants of that state. What is imperialist about equal rights?

If you ask any Palestinian whether they would prefer one state or two states the overwhelming majority opt for the former. The Palestinian Liberation Organisation only adopted support for 2 states because they despaired of achieving a single state. Today it is clear to all that, in the words of B’tselem, Israel’s main human rights organisation, Israel is a

regime of Jewish supremacy from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea: This is apartheid

In 1919 Chaim Weizmann, later to become Israel’s first President, stated that a Jewish state would be ‘as Jewish as England was English.’ In other words its indigenous population would have no place.

A Jewish ethno-nationalist state cannot be any other than a racist, apartheid state. By definition it is a state that privileges Jews.

Crispin Flintoff Interviews Chris Williamson and Natalie Strecker about Zack Polanski

I also wish to raise my expulsion from the GP, which you have kept quiet about. It was planned and executed by a small group on the Green Party Council [GPC] led by Laura Eccott and supported by Green supporters of Zionism and genocide like Elise Benjamin. It was agreed by the narrowest of margins 7-6.

The Racism of Elise Benjamin – the Green Party’s leading Zionist

According to Benjamin the Nakba is ‘Iran backed propaganda’ the Palestinians being too stupid to have thought of it themselves. She also repeats the fable of an Israeli ‘offer’ to allow the Palestinian refugees to return. Wikipedia’s 1949 Lausanne Conference dispels this nonsense. There was an ‘offer’ to accept 100,000 refugees but it was quickly withdrawn and in return Israel wanted a portion of southern Lebanon and other territories

Benjamin fawns over a White Israeli woman, Izabella Gandlin who was apparently killed by Palestinians (we will never know because it is likely that most Israelis who died on October 7 were victims of the Hannibal Directive. Benjamin never profiles Palestinian children or doctors like Dr Abu Safia who to this day is imprisoned and tortured by Israel. Indeed not once has Benjamin said anything about the genocide, starvation and torture.

In response to an article about Israel’s sexual assault on Palestinian girls, Benjamin reaches for another Zionist fabrication about Hamas intercepting aid and abusing Palestinian women. She also only has words for the fake allegations of mass rape on October 7, not the documented and videod IDF rape of Palestinians.

On April 16 I was suspended. The complainant was allowed to remain anonymous contrary to GP policy. Just 11 words justified my suspension: ‘Documented history of antisemitism, including court decisions and recent terrorism charges’

On May 7 I was expelled, the reasons being that I had:

  1.           ‘displayed no contrition or regret (or remorse)’ for ‘the repeated                instances of anti-Semitism that led to TG’s suspension.’
  2.         That I had had the audacity to publicly criticise those who had                   engineered my expulsion.

My expulsion was based on a series of lies. ‘Repeated Anti-Semitism’ was not a reason for my suspension so how could I show contrition? If the GP wishes to expel anyone then it should be those who make false allegations of anti-Semitism - Elise Benjamin, Laura Eccott and Andrei Frieze. It is the Green racists not the Green anti-racists who should be expelled.

I was also suspended for the ‘crime’ of being charged with ‘terrorism’. Thousands of people face ‘terrorism’ charges today for supporting Palestine Action. The most recent Home Office statistics reveal that the average ‘terrorist’ is no longer a 31 year old male but a 59 year old White woman.

The GPC assumed that being charged ‘terrorism’ meant that I was guilty. GPC acted contrary to one of the most basic principles of law, the right to be treated as innocent until proven guilty. It is enshrined in Article 6(2) of the European Convention on Human Rights. I completely understand why Laura Eccott and Elise Benjamin prefer Israeli ‘justice’, where you are assumed to be guilty and gaoled without even the pretence of a trial (if you are a Palestinian).

On August 18 I went on trial under the Terrorism Act 2000. It ended on August 21 when the jury unanimously acquitted me after just 2 hours. They accepted that what was at stake was freedom of speech not terrorism. I was fortunate that the jury did not consist of members of Green Party Council.

My closing speech to the jury was described by the right-wing Libertarian Alliance as ‘maybe the most important speech made this century in an English court of law’. I explained why the Terrorism Act 2000 was not about terrorism but about suppressing free speech. It is something that members of GPC might take the time to acquaint themselves with.

It is bad enough that the British state accuses Palestine activists and protesters against the banning of Palestine Action of terrorism. What is grotesque is the fact that the GPC gave their support to those accusations.

Zionism is a reflection of the European racism that led to the Holocaust. The Palestinians are the Jews of Israel. Christian Zionism predated Jewish Zionism by 4 centuries. It believed in the idea of a ‘Jewish return to Palestine’ an anti-Semitic idea which assumed that Jews do not belong where they live.

44% of young British Jews now declare that they are anti-Zionist or non-Zionist. The GP no longer needs to walk in fear of the ‘anti-Semitism’ scarecrow. The GP needs to abandon support for Zionism and become an anti-racist and anti-imperialist party.

The GP has the most pro-Palestinian policy of any political party yet it is distrusted by Palestine solidarity supporters because its main interest lies in harvesting the votes of those opposed to genocide rather than putting its policies into practice.

The IHRA Definition of Anti-Semitism is still GP policy and you have said nothing about this. Recently New South Wales Supreme Court Judge Desmond Fagan ruled that the IHRA:

propounds a concept different from that which ‘antisemitism’ has long been understood to describe and appropriates that word to the novel concept.... The [purpose of IHRA] is to graft onto the community’s abhorrence of antisemitism a parasitic rejection of protest against Israel.

The GP Establishment has mobilised against the Zionism is Racism motion and you Zack have equivocated. It is time for you to come out in its support now you are an anti-Zionist.

James Baldwin

The West’s support for Israel has nothing to do with the Holocaust. Jews are the moral alibi for a racist state guarding Western interests in the Arab East.  As James Baldwin remarked:

But the state of Israel was not created for the salvation of the Jews; it was created for the salvation of the Western interests.

The real problem is the GP’s fear of breaking with the foreign policy consensus between Labour and the Tories. The question is whether you want to break from that or adapt to it.

Yours sincerely,

Tony Greenstein

I Have Been Disinvited by IJAN from Speaking at the Picket of Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotoveli

Below is the Speech I Would Have Made When Challenging the Police to Arrest Me Again

Last night I posted a blog advertising a speech I was going to give at the picket of Tzipi Hotoveli on Friday evening. Tonight I received an email from Sam Weinstein of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN) withdrawing that invitation. You can judge for yourselves whether the reasons given were the real reasons and whether IJAN feared that events were getting out of their control. I have saved both emails here.

The alleged reason for the cancellation concerns my refusal to get involved, despite considerable pressure, in the case of alleged harassment of an Israeli activist which dates back many years. I was accused of taking the side of the alleged harasser, which I reject, but nonetheless I confess that I have wrestled with the issue. I have taken the advice of others not to make any further comment on it.

What is important though is the issue of the Metropolitan Police implementing the ‘illustration’ of anti-Semitism in the Zionists’ IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, which states that ‘Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis’ is anti-Semitic. At a time of genocide this and only this, is what matters, not an arcane personal dispute.

Below is what would have been my speech to the picket/ demonstration next Friday.

I am only going to provide a few links, not only because of the time it takes but because, if I had made the speech, I would not have given any links!

Why comparisons between Israel’s holocaust in Gaza and the Nazi holocaust are valid and relevant

Comrades,

Three months ago, on October 4 2023, I was arrested at this demonstration by the institutionally racist Metropolitan Police for a ‘racially aggravated’ public order offence. In essence I was being accused of anti-Semitism for having compared the Zionist holocaust in Gaza to the Nazi holocaust. Comparing the Nazi treatment of Jews to Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians is now deemed by the Met to be ‘anti-Semitic’.

Despite being arrested, held for 7 hours in a cell and subject to restrictive bail conditions, I was informed 7 weeks later that the Crown Prosecution Service were not going to charge me. No doubt even the CPS could see the absurdity of charging someone who is Jewish with ‘anti-Semitism’!

People often say to me that even if allegations of Zionist collaboration with the Nazis is true it is better not to mention them for fear of giving unnecessary offence to Jewish people. My response is simple. We will never understand why Israel behaves the way it does unless we understand Zionism, the ideology that governs the actions of the Israeli state – its ethnic cleansing, its desire to ‘cleanse’ Gaza of the Palestinians and now its deliberate and targeted extermination of Palestinian civilians.

Bear in mind that even the terminology of the Israeli state today when it talks of ‘cleansing’ Gaza is identical to Nazi descriptions of  ‘cleansing’ areas of Jews.

The Nazi holocaust against the Jews is being used today to justify Israel’s holocaust of the Palestinians. In the words of Gideon Levy, a Ha’aretz columnist:

I have yet to hear a single teenager come back from Auschwitz and say that we mustn’t abuse others the way we were abused. There has yet to be a school whose pupils came back from Birkenau straight to the Gaza border, saw the barbed-wire fence and said, Never again. The message is always the opposite. Gaza is permitted because of Auschwitz.

People often say that Israelis are suffering from an ‘inter-generational holocaust trauma’.  My response is no. What they are suffering from is a settler-colonial trauma. The fear that the indigenous population that they have oppressed so long will rise up against them.

The slave owners in the Caribbean and the American colonies suffered from a similar trauma and their reaction to slave uprisings was not dissimilar to that of Israel’s reaction to October 7.

The Zionists have magnified October 7 out of all proportion. They have said that this was the largest slaughter of Jews since the holocaust. In fact the largest death of Jews since the holocaust was under the Argentinian Junta (1976-83) which tortured to death 3,000 Jews, up to 12.5% of those who disappeared.

Israel doesn’t mention what happened in Argentina however because at the time it was arming and training the Argentine military. It even refused visas to Argentine Jews because they were ‘the wrong sort of Jew’, a phrase you may have heard recently.

This is however a particularly noxious and racist comparison. Jews in Nazi Germany were killed because they were Jews.  Israelis were killed on October 7 because they were occupiers not because they were Jews.

Israeli deaths on October 7 pale in comparison with Israel’s repeated attacks on Gaza.

In Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014 some 2,200 Palestinians, including 515 children, were killed.  Death of Israelis on October 7 were 1139, half of this.  It is estimated that since the Nakba some 134,000 Palestinians and Arabs have been killed.

On 7 October 400 of the dead were soldiers and police and therefore legitimate targets. Because of Israel’s Hannibal Directive, which mandates that it’s better to kill your own people if they are taken hostage rather than allow them to be swapped for prisoners, that it’s highly likely that the majority of the remaining 739 Israeli deaths were at the hands of their own trigger happy military.

The New York Times Fraudulent Article that Alleged that Hamas had Planned October 7 as a Mass Rape Expedition

That is why we have had a non-stop barrage of atrocity propaganda from Israel.  First it was 40 beheaded babies, baked babies and babies hung from clothes lines. Then it the mass rape story despite there being no victims and no forensic evidence.

October 7 was the catalyst not the reason for the genocide taking place in Gaza today. Chants of ‘Death to the Arabs’ didn’t begin on October 7. Ben-Gvir, who had a picture of Baruch Goldstein on his wall (the man who murdered 29 worshippers in the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron in 1994) became Israel’s Minister of Police at the beginning of 2023. Gvir is a fully-fledged Jewish  Nazi. A Jewish Nazi list became the third largest in the Knesset in the November 2022 elections, not October 2023.

The reasons for making comparisons between Israel today and the Nazi period is quite simple. Any group of people, given the right set of conditions and circumstances, can become genocidal maniacs and Nazis. Racism is not a biological property.

There was nothing German about the Nazis’ extermination of the Jews. The Romanians were even more enthusiastic about killing Jews  when the Germans seemed to be winning the war. Slovakia asked the Nazis to take the Jews off their hands. Croatia even set up its own extermination camp, Jasenovac.

When Israeli ‘Defence’ Minister Yoav Gallant began the genocide, he described the Palestinians as ‘human animals’ the very phrase that Himmler had used about the Jews, when justifying the  Holocaust on October 4 1943 to senior SS Generals. Gallant also promised to starve them and deny water and fuel. Also Nazi tactics.

Netanyahu invoked the example of Amalek, the tribe that god had commanded the Israelites to wipe out – every man, woman, child and infant was to be murdered.

The number of calls to genocide by Israeli politicians is limitless. Israeli Heritage Minister Amihai Eliyahu suggested that dropping a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip was “one of the possibilities”. Law for Palestine released a database of over 500 genocidal statements by influential Israelis, including the President and Cabinet members.

Wiping out the Palestinians is a very popular idea in Israel. The most popular car bumper sticker in Israel is ‘finish them off’. Indeed if the comparison with Nazi Germany is wrong it is because the level of anti-Semitism amongst ordinary Germans was far less than that in Israel.

When the presenters of Israel’s oldest podcast ‘two nice Jewish  boys’ said

‘If you gave me a button to just erase Gaza, every single living being in Gaza would no longer be living tomorrow. I would press it in a second’

there was no condemnation in Israel, let alone a prosecution as would happen if an Israeli Arab were to say the same about Jews. Incitement to murder Palestinians is not an offence in Israel.

There are some who go even further. Rabbi Eliyahu Mali, of the pre-military Yeshivah Shirat Moshe, said:

‘“Whoever comes to kill you... does not only include the young man aged 16, 18, 20, or 30 who is now pointing a weapon at you, but also the future generation (the children of Gaza), and those who produce the future generation (women of Gaza), because there is really no difference,”

In other words one should kill children as well as their mothers because they may become the fighters of the future. Compare this with what Himmler said about killing Jewish children in a speech on October 6th 1943.

‘I did not assume to have the right to exterminate the men… and have the avengers personified in the children to become adults for our children and grandchildren.’

When pogroms against Arabs broke out in Israeli towns in 2021one user wrote

“We are no longer Jews today. People from Holon, Bat Yam and Rishon Lezion go out to bring war. Today we are Nazis.”

Today in Gaza, with the destruction of hospitals and the murder of patients and doctors and the detention of people like Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the Director of Kamal Adwan hospital, in the Sdei Teiman torture centre, we can see the degeneration of Israeli society before our eyes. A society where 65% of the population is opposed to criminal prosecutions of those who rape prisoners.

Indeed in some respects Israel is going beyond what the Nazis did. In Budapest it was the Nazis’ protĆ©gĆ©s in the Arrow Cross, a Hungarian Nazi party, that murdered doctors and patients at two Jewish hospitals (Maros Street and Varosmajor Street). The Gestapo did not touch the hospitals. In Berlin the Jewish hospital survived untouched until the end of the war.  It is Israel which has a peculiar attraction for destroying Palestinian hospitals.

We should also ask ourselves whether the Nazi destruction of Jewish synagogues during Kristallnacht is any different to the Zionist destruction of virtually every mosque in Gaza?

Ever since its creation Israel has laid claim to inherit the memory of the Jews who died in the holocaust. The reality, as Gaza shows, is that Israel inherits the memory of those who killed Europe’s Jews.

In the words of an article in the Jewish Chronicle quoting what I said at Palestine Expo in 2019, ‘Israel is Hitler’s Bastard Offspring’.

I leave you with just one thought. If the level of racism in Israel today had been present in Europe during the Holocaust it wouldn’t have been 6 million Jews who died but 7 or even 8 million.

Tony Greenstein, author, Zionism During the Holocaust: The Weaponisation of Memory in the Service of State and Nation

There is probably no Palestine solidarity supporter who hasn’t been accused of anti-Semitism. We know, because Netanyahu has told us, that the International Criminal Court decision to issue a warrant for his arrest was because of anti-Semitism! Any criticism of Israel today is automatically a form of 'antisemitism'. Antisemitism is no longer hatred or hostility to Jews as Jews, it is criticism of the 'Jewish state'.

Zionism arose as a reaction to anti-Semitism but it was a reaction of a special kind. Zionism accepted that Jews did not belong in their own countries, that they were a nation apart. For Zionism anti-Semitism could not be fought because it was inherent in the non-Jew.

As Leon Pinsker, the founder of the Lovers of Zionism wrote in his 1882 pamphlet Autoemancipation

Judeophobia is then a mental disease, and as a mental disease it is hereditary, and having been inherited for 2,000 years, it is incurable.’

Theodor Herzl

And if anti-Semitism was incurable, then there was no point opposing it. Theodor Herzl, the founder of Political Zionism drew the same conclusion from the Dreyfus Trial:

In Paris... I achieved a freer attitude towards anti-Semitism, which I now began to understand historically and to pardon. Above all, I recognise the emptiness and futility of trying to 'combat' anti-Semitism.

Edouard Drumont

The leading anti-Semite and leader of the anti-Dreyfusards in France was Edouard Drumont whose book La France Juive sold 100,000 on its first edition. He published the anti-Semitic paper La Libre Parole and argued for the exclusion of Jews from society.

Yet this didn’t stop Herzl from admiring him. Herzl wrote that ‘I owe to Drumont a great deal of the present freedom of my concepts, because he is an artist.’ Herzl shared Drumont’s antagonism to French Jewry writing that:

I took a look at the Paris Jews and saw a family likeness in their faces: bold, misshapen noses, furtive and cunning eyes.

After Herzl had badgered his friend Alphonse Daudet, a well-known anti-Semite, Drumont favourably reviewed The Jewish State, in an article ‘Solution de la Question Juive’ published in La Libre Parole on 16 January 1897. Herzl expressed his delight with the review in his Diary.

It was little wonder that Herzl wrote that

‘the anti-Semites will become our most dependable friends, the anti-Semitic countries our allies.’

Chaim Weizmann

So it has proved. Others went even further. Chaim Weizmann, the long-standing President of the Zionist Organisation and Israel’s first President, expressed his understanding and sympathy with the leader of the anti-Semitic British Brothers League, William Evans-Gordon MP. Weizmann wrote in his autobiography, Trial and Error, that:

our people were rather hard on him. The Aliens Bill in England and the movement which grew around it were natural phenomenon which might have been foreseen... Sir William Evans-Gordon had no particular anti-Jewish prejudices... He acted as he thought, according to his best lights and in the most kindly way, in the interests of his country… he was sincerely ready to encourage any settlement of Jews almost anywhere in the British Empire, but he failed to see why the ghettos of London or Leeds or Whitechapel should be made into a branch of the ghettos of Warsaw and Pinsk.

Arthur Balfour & Winston Churchill

Evans-Gordon was a strong supporter of Zionism as was another anti-Semite, Arthur James Balfour. As Prime Minister Balfour introduced the 1905 Aliens Act aimed at keeping Russian Jews out of Britain. In 1917 Balfour wrote a letter, which became known as the Balfour Declaration, to Lord Walter Rothschild pledging the land of the Palestinians to the Zionist movement. The only member of the Lloyd George Cabinet who opposed the BD was its only Jewish member, Sir Edwin Montagu.

As Zionist novelist A B Yehoshua said, in a lecture to the Union of Jewish Students (Jewish Chronicle 22.1.82)

‘Anti-Zionism is not the product of the non-Jews. On the contrary, the Gentiles have always encouraged Zionism, hoping that it would help to rid them of the Jews in their midst. Even today, in a perverse way, a real anti-Semite must be a Zionist.’

The Zionists aimed to create the ‘new Jew’ in Palestine and they despised the gutter ghetto Jew who lived in Eastern Europe plying their trades and living at the margins of society.

Jacob Klatzkin, the editor of the Zionist Organisation paper Die Welt and co-founder of Encyclopedia Judaica , held that the Jews in the diaspora or ‘exile’ (Galut) were:

a people disfigured in both body and soul – in a word, of a horror. At the very most it can maintain us in a state of national impurity and breed some sort of outlandish creature… The result will be something neither Jew nor gentile - in any case, not a pure national type... some sort of oddity among the peoples going by the name - Jew.

Pinhas Rosenbluth, Israel’s first Justice Minister described Palestine as ‘an institute for the fumigation of Jewish vermin’. So damning were these elite Zionists for their Jewish brothers and sisters that Israeli political scientist, Joachim Doron wrote in an article ‘Classic Zionism and Modern Anti-Semitism’ in the Journal of Israeli History No. 8 that

‘a perusal of the Zionist sources reveals a wealth of charges against the Diaspora Jew, some of which are so scathing that the generation that witnessed Auschwitz has difficulty comprehending them.’

Arthur Ruppin

The most important figure in pre-state Palestine, Arthur Ruppin was an avid supporter of the racial sciences, eugenics and Social Darwinism. He considered Arab Jews as an inferior dysgenic element among Jews.

When a friend of Ruppin called him an anti-Semite he retorted ‘I have already established here [in his diary] that I despise the cancers of Judaism more than does the worst anti-Semite.’

Ruppin was not alone in his support for anti-Semitism. Jacob Klatzkin wrote that

If we do not admit the rightfulness of anti-Semitism we deny the rightfulness of our own nationalism... Instead of establishing societies for defence against the anti-Semites who want to reduce our rights, we should establish societies for defence against our friends, who desire to defend our rights.

Although Zionists today call anti-Zionists ‘self-haters’ if anyone hated themselves, it was the Zionists. It is little wonder that when Zionism arose amongst Jews it was seen as a form of Jewish anti-Semitism.

That is why in nearly all the Jewish communities prior to 1945, Zionism was a distinct minority.  In Germany in 1933 they constituted just 2% of the Jewish population.

During the Nazi era, 1933-9, the Zionists were the favoured children of the Nazis whereas the ‘assimilationists’, those Jews who asserted that they were Germans as well as Jewish, were subject to restrictions.

On 28 January 1935 Reinhard Heydrich, the ‘real engineer of the final solution’  issued a directive stating that:

The activity of the Zionist-oriented youth organisations that are engaged in the occupational restructuring of the Jews … lies in the interest of the National Socialist state’s leadership. (These organizations) are not to be treated with that strictness that it is necessary to apply to the members of the so-called German-Jewish organizations (assimilationists).

In May 1935 Schwarze Korps, paper of the SS, wrote that:

the Zionists adhere to a strict racial position and by emigrating to Palestine they are helping to build their own Jewish state.... The assimilation-minded Jews deny their race and insist on their loyalty to Germany or claim to be Christians because they have been baptized, in order to subvert National Socialist principles.

When the Nazis came to power the only group amongst Jews who welcomed them were the Zionist leaders.  That was why they were so opposed to the Boycott of Nazi Germany. They wished to profit from them not fight them.

Berl Katznelson, a founder of Mapai (the Israeli Labour Party  and editor of Davar as well as Ben-Gurion’s effective deputy, saw the rise of Hitler as ‘an opportunity to build and flourish like none we have ever had or ever will have.’ Ben-Gurion was even more optimistic. ‘The Nazis’ victory would become “a fertile force for Zionism.” Joachim Prinz, one of the leaders of German Zionism and later Deputy President of the World Jewish Congress, admitted that:

It was morally disturbing to seem to be considered as the favored children of the Nazi Government, particularly when it dissolved the anti-Zionist youth groups, and seemed in other ways to prefer the Zionists. The Nazis asked for a ‘more Zionist behaviour’.

Ben-Gurion on Saving Jewish Refugees

Eitan Bloom quoted Emil Ludwig (1881-1948), the world-famous biographer, ‘who expressed the general attitude of the Zionist movement’:

Hitler will be forgotten in a few years, but he will have a beautiful monument in Palestine. You know, the coming of the Nazis was rather a welcome thing. … Thousands who seemed to be completely lost to Judaism were brought back to the fold by Hitler, and for that I am personally very grateful to him.

Nahman Bialik

Nahman Bialik, the national Zionist poet, volunteered that ‘Hitlerism has perhaps saved German Jewry, which was being assimilated into annihilation.’ Germany’s remaining Jews were of course annihilated, but not by assimilation.

So it should not be any surprise today that the best friends of Israel – Trump, Orban, Tommy Robinson, Richard Spencer, are all fascists and anti-Semites.
