The Time Has Come for Britain’s Anti-Zionist Jewish Groups to Unite

At a Time of Genocide, Division and Disunity is a Luxury We Cannot Afford

When I ‘came out’ as an anti-Zionist Jew in 1970 it was a lonely experience. I lived in Liverpool where my father was a rabbi in a community of about 8,000 people (now less than 2,000).

The only other Jews I knew were in a socialist group which I joined at the age of 16 (expelled at 19!), the International Socialists (now the SWP). It was thanks to them that I read my first anti-Zionist pamphlet, the Class Nature of Israeli Society, by Moshe Machover, Haim Hanegbi and Akiva Orr.

This pamphlet, which first appeared as an article in the New Left Review, helped me to make sense of my instinctive hostility to Zionism as a Marxist. Zionism I began to see as an exclusivist ideology and movement whose only concern was the Jews. This was before the oppression and dispossession of the Palestinians and the Apartheid nature of Israeli society had become widely known.

At that time there was no Palestine solidarity movement in Britain and much of the left had illusions in Israel. Tony Benn and Eric Heffer, two stalwarts of the Labour left were members of Labour Friends of Israel.

Today everything is different. Jewish anti-Zionists are not rare. Zionism is no longer assumed to be the natural home of Jews. Its alliance today with the far-right – the EDL, Tommy Robinson, Bannon, Orban etc. – is well known, clear and unmistakable but half a century ago things were different.

interview with neo-Nazi Richard Spencer on Israel’s Channel 2 about why he calls himself a 'white Zionist'

Hasbara, the Zionist version of propaganda still held sway. The Labour Zionists who had formed the government of Israel from 1948-77 continuously spoke of peace whilst they waged war. As I wrote in Tribune in July 1984, there was nothing Likud had done that Labour hadn’t done before it.

It took the invasion of Lebanon in 1982 for the scales to fall from the Left’s eyes. Benn and Heffer resigned from LFI. For much of the left Israel had been an oasis of socialism in the Middle East. Even Hannah Arendt was fooled into believing that the Kibbutzim were ‘perhaps the most promising of all social experiments made in the 20th century.’ [The Jew As Pariah, p. 185.

The image of the Kibbutzim seen in the West - Zionism and Socialism - however Arabs played no part in this 'socialism'

The kibbutzim were held to be models of socialism with their collective organisation and their lack of private property. No one told me that they were racially exclusive societies that banned Arabs from membership or that they had been established over the ruins of confiscated Arab villages whose inhabitants had been expelled. Nor had we been told that they had been established as the most effective and economical method of colonisation and were stockade and watchtower settlements.

Israel was not founded for the benefit of Jews. The West does not support Israel because it calls itself a ‘Jewish’ state. As James Baldwin noted in 1979:

Whenever criticism of Israel is made our rulers profess to be concerned about ‘anti-Semitism’. It is the only form of racism they are concerned about. Even Donald Trump, a bigot and racist for every season, is not only concerned about Jewish students (Zionist Jewish students naturally) suffering from anti-Semitism on campuses but he has cut federal funding from those universities and colleges which allow Palestine solidarity protests on campus.

This is at the same time that he is insisting that diversity and anti-racist programmes be ended, migrants be deported and that Confederate flags and symbols be preserved.

You would have to be stupid (unfortunately many people are) not to see how the rich and powerful, not least racists like Starmer, are using Jewish people and what they call ‘anti-Semitism’ (i.e. anti-Zionism) as a means to intimidate and frighten off support for Palestine and opposition to Zionism.

The same is true in this country. The racist Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Mark Rowley, has used the pretext of Jewish Sabbath Services to reroute, ban and delay Palestinian marches on the grounds that they might cause offence to Zionist Jews. Jewish residents of Swiss Cottage are the pretext for banning demonstrations against Israel's racist ambassador, Tzipi Hotoveli.

British and Western support for Zionism is not because of their concern for Jews but because of their own imperial interests. Jews constitute the moral alibi for imperialism in the Middle East.

It is for that reason alone that it is incumbent upon Jews who are not Zionists to say in both words and deed that what Israel does is not in my name.

Jews in America, for a number of reasons have been in advance of British Jews. From May 1-4 over 2,000 members of Jewish Voice for Peace gathered in Baltimore for a member’s conference (see Massive JVP member meeting vows to fight Zionism, fascism, and the weaponization of antisemitism).

In the United States 40% of young Jews see Israel as an apartheid state and one suspects that that figure is far higher today in the midst of the current genocide. No one who is progressive and Jewish has any excuse any longer for neutrality. Non-Zionism is no longer an option. It is fence sitting.

As Martin Luther King said ‘The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict.’

Archbishop Desmond Tutu observed that if you are neutral at a time of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor.

Today it is not difficult to be Jewish and anti-Zionist. On April 10, the Zionists’ propaganda organ, the Jewish Chronicle, woke up to the fact that young Jews were turning against Zionism and carried an articleWho are the young Jews turning against Israel?’ by Jane Prinsley.

Former General Amiram Levin

Of course Jane, like all the Jewish Chronicle’s journalists is a Zionist. If she wasn’t she wouldn’t be working for them. The JC had started to realise that ‘Radical new groups for Jews who do not support Zionism have formed on campuses up and down the UK’. It went on to say that

radical Jewish student groups have emerged to cater to Jews who do not support Zionism. From Leeds, Liverpool, Brighton and Birkbeck to Edinburgh, Warwick, Cardiff, Cambridge and UCL, students have formed Jewish communities, or kehillot.’

This followed an article by Karen Glaser who used to be a features writer on the New Statesman where she wrote what I called the most ‘trivial, trite and superficial’ article the NS has ever run. Its subtitle was  How Karen Glaser’s ex-boyfriend had a very very narrow escape!’ The article was about how Ms Glaser had kicked her Corbyn supporting, socialist boyfriend out of the nest at 2 am in the morning because he doubted that Corbyn was quite the anti-Semite that his girlfriend imagined.

So the article ‘I can’t discuss Israel with my anti-Zionist kids – it’s pointless’ was on a par with Glaser’s normal output. It described how 11 year old Talia had given her mother back the Star of David she had been given as a baby and further that she was ‘resigning as a Jew’.

Not only that but Talia had disposed of her mother’s big Israeli flag! Bright and intelligent child you might think. Clearly someone to interview. Karen though thought differently:

Zionist parents whose children are scared of being associated with Israel; youngsters who have internalised antisemitism, in particular its political iteration, anti-Zionism. Their parents say these young people openly loathe the Jews’ nation state. And anecdotal evidence suggests that the problem has grown exponentially since the October pogroms.

Karen Glaser is nothing if not stupid. That after all is why the Jewish Chronicle sought her out. It probably hadn’t occurred to her that it isn’t internalisation of anti-Semitism but detestation of burning children alive and bombing hospitals that is making Jewish youngsters puke at the mere mention of the ‘Jewish’ state. Talia doesn’t sound like someone who is intimidated.

Naturally I wrote a letter to the JC suggesting that it might have been a good idea to interview the children concerned and find out their views. And equally naturally the JC refused to print it. The last thing the JC wants to admit is that there may be good reasons why young Jewish kids detest Jewish racial nationalism.

Shortly after these articles 36 members of the Board of Deputies signed a letter to the Financial Times. It was not an anti-Zionist letter. Far from it. But even hardened Zionists had begun to realise that they were defending the indefensible. A war driven by neo-Nazis in Israel's government.

Equally predictable was the reaction of the genocide supporting President of the BOD, Phil Rosenberg, and the rest of the Board's Executive. There is no atrocity, no genocide that they cannot support. The presence of open fascists in Israel's government worries them not. They immediately suspended Harriett Goldenberg, the Vice-Chair of its International Division and opened disciplinary proceedings against all 36 signatories.

Moshe Yalon – Ben Gvir & Smotrich are Mein Kamp Reversed

Being good Zionists the last thing they wanted to see is any discussion over the rights and wrongs of the actions of what I have called ‘Hitler’s Bastard Offspring’. The BOD is there to support whatever Israel does, right or wrong. Jewish neo-Nazis like Itamar Ben-Gvir trouble them not. After all even Gvir and Smotrich are Jewish and Zionism is about the unity of the Jewish tribe.

Rosenberg then issued a disingenuous statement that proclaimed The Board of Deputies is a democratic organisation’ without mentioning the suspension of one officer and the disciplinary process (in the form of a complaint) that was taken against the dissenters.

It is clear that the worm is beginning to turn. That all those who have not become overt fascists and racists, like Rosenberg and his Executive, have developed qualms about the genocide being conducted against 2 million Palestinians in the name of a war against Hamas.

It is therefore incumbent upon Jewish anti-Zionists to come together and form one united organisation like Jewish Voice for Peace in the United States.  At the moment we have a plethora of organisations. I am in Jewish Network for Palestine, there is Jewish Voice for Labour, formed in the Labour Party during the ‘anti-Semitism’ smear campaign against Corbyn and there is the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Organisation and the newcomer on the block Na'amod, which contains a few Zionists, non-Zionists and anti-Zionists. Na'amod is the most moderate and probably the largest.

There is also the older Jews for Justice for Palestinians which is a 2 states group that does very little except canvass for signatures for its founding statement and there is also Independent Jewish Voices which made a big splash when it was created in 2007 but which is now inactive. Its website was last updated a year ago and its last meeting was over four years ago.

By my estimates there are about 2,000 people who are members of the above organisations. There are undoubted differences between people but there is no reason why there should be so many organisations.

JfJP and IJV are not membership organisations. Clearly Na'amod, in so far as it contains some Zionists, will not be able to join a unified anti-Zionist organisation but there is no reason why the 3 anti-Zionist Jewish organisations cannot come together into one single anti-Zionist Jewish organisation.

Although JVL has not explicitly declared itself as anti-Zionist, in practice it is. There will obviously be differences over things like one or two states though the consensus today is that two states cannot be achieved given the number of settlers in the West Bank.

However we owe it to the Palestinians who are undergoing such terrible massacres and pogroms to put aside minor differences in the name of not only unity but effectiveness. A single united anti-Zionist Jewish group would be a pole of attraction, in particular to young Jews who do not wish to have to bear the strain and the stain of being seen to support genocide in the name of Jews. Most Jews who have grown up with the exploitation by Zionism of the memory of the holocaust find it strange that the most ardent supporters of Zionism today are the neo-Nazi and far right in politics.

When Tommy Robinson, Donald Trump and Viktor Orban are on your side, with neo-Nazi Richard Spencer declaring that he is a White Zionist, many Jews will decide that they have had enough of Zionism and its quest for Jewish racial purity. It is the duty of the existing anti-Zionist groups to facilitate that journey not to erect obstacles to it.

I Have Been Disinvited by IJAN from Speaking at the Picket of Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotoveli

Below is the Speech I Would Have Made When Challenging the Police to Arrest Me Again

Last night I posted a blog advertising a speech I was going to give at the picket of Tzipi Hotoveli on Friday evening. Tonight I received an email from Sam Weinstein of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN) withdrawing that invitation. You can judge for yourselves whether the reasons given were the real reasons and whether IJAN feared that events were getting out of their control. I have saved both emails here.

The alleged reason for the cancellation concerns my refusal to get involved, despite considerable pressure, in the case of alleged harassment of an Israeli activist which dates back many years. I was accused of taking the side of the alleged harasser, which I reject, but nonetheless I confess that I have wrestled with the issue. I have taken the advice of others not to make any further comment on it.

What is important though is the issue of the Metropolitan Police implementing the ‘illustration’ of anti-Semitism in the Zionists’ IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, which states that ‘Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis’ is anti-Semitic. At a time of genocide this and only this, is what matters, not an arcane personal dispute.

Below is what would have been my speech to the picket/ demonstration next Friday.

I am only going to provide a few links, not only because of the time it takes but because, if I had made the speech, I would not have given any links!

Why comparisons between Israel’s holocaust in Gaza and the Nazi holocaust are valid and relevant

Comrades,

Three months ago, on October 4 2023, I was arrested at this demonstration by the institutionally racist Metropolitan Police for a ‘racially aggravated’ public order offence. In essence I was being accused of anti-Semitism for having compared the Zionist holocaust in Gaza to the Nazi holocaust. Comparing the Nazi treatment of Jews to Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians is now deemed by the Met to be ‘anti-Semitic’.

Despite being arrested, held for 7 hours in a cell and subject to restrictive bail conditions, I was informed 7 weeks later that the Crown Prosecution Service were not going to charge me. No doubt even the CPS could see the absurdity of charging someone who is Jewish with ‘anti-Semitism’!

People often say to me that even if allegations of Zionist collaboration with the Nazis is true it is better not to mention them for fear of giving unnecessary offence to Jewish people. My response is simple. We will never understand why Israel behaves the way it does unless we understand Zionism, the ideology that governs the actions of the Israeli state – its ethnic cleansing, its desire to ‘cleanse’ Gaza of the Palestinians and now its deliberate and targeted extermination of Palestinian civilians.

Bear in mind that even the terminology of the Israeli state today when it talks of ‘cleansing’ Gaza is identical to Nazi descriptions of  ‘cleansing’ areas of Jews.

The Nazi holocaust against the Jews is being used today to justify Israel’s holocaust of the Palestinians. In the words of Gideon Levy, a Ha’aretz columnist:

I have yet to hear a single teenager come back from Auschwitz and say that we mustn’t abuse others the way we were abused. There has yet to be a school whose pupils came back from Birkenau straight to the Gaza border, saw the barbed-wire fence and said, Never again. The message is always the opposite. Gaza is permitted because of Auschwitz.

People often say that Israelis are suffering from an ‘inter-generational holocaust trauma’.  My response is no. What they are suffering from is a settler-colonial trauma. The fear that the indigenous population that they have oppressed so long will rise up against them.

The slave owners in the Caribbean and the American colonies suffered from a similar trauma and their reaction to slave uprisings was not dissimilar to that of Israel’s reaction to October 7.

The Zionists have magnified October 7 out of all proportion. They have said that this was the largest slaughter of Jews since the holocaust. In fact the largest death of Jews since the holocaust was under the Argentinian Junta (1976-83) which tortured to death 3,000 Jews, up to 12.5% of those who disappeared.

Israel doesn’t mention what happened in Argentina however because at the time it was arming and training the Argentine military. It even refused visas to Argentine Jews because they were ‘the wrong sort of Jew’, a phrase you may have heard recently.

This is however a particularly noxious and racist comparison. Jews in Nazi Germany were killed because they were Jews.  Israelis were killed on October 7 because they were occupiers not because they were Jews.

Israeli deaths on October 7 pale in comparison with Israel’s repeated attacks on Gaza.

In Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014 some 2,200 Palestinians, including 515 children, were killed.  Death of Israelis on October 7 were 1139, half of this.  It is estimated that since the Nakba some 134,000 Palestinians and Arabs have been killed.

On 7 October 400 of the dead were soldiers and police and therefore legitimate targets. Because of Israel’s Hannibal Directive, which mandates that it’s better to kill your own people if they are taken hostage rather than allow them to be swapped for prisoners, that it’s highly likely that the majority of the remaining 739 Israeli deaths were at the hands of their own trigger happy military.

The New York Times Fraudulent Article that Alleged that Hamas had Planned October 7 as a Mass Rape Expedition

That is why we have had a non-stop barrage of atrocity propaganda from Israel.  First it was 40 beheaded babies, baked babies and babies hung from clothes lines. Then it the mass rape story despite there being no victims and no forensic evidence.

October 7 was the catalyst not the reason for the genocide taking place in Gaza today. Chants of ‘Death to the Arabs’ didn’t begin on October 7. Ben-Gvir, who had a picture of Baruch Goldstein on his wall (the man who murdered 29 worshippers in the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron in 1994) became Israel’s Minister of Police at the beginning of 2023. Gvir is a fully-fledged Jewish  Nazi. A Jewish Nazi list became the third largest in the Knesset in the November 2022 elections, not October 2023.

The reasons for making comparisons between Israel today and the Nazi period is quite simple. Any group of people, given the right set of conditions and circumstances, can become genocidal maniacs and Nazis. Racism is not a biological property.

There was nothing German about the Nazis’ extermination of the Jews. The Romanians were even more enthusiastic about killing Jews  when the Germans seemed to be winning the war. Slovakia asked the Nazis to take the Jews off their hands. Croatia even set up its own extermination camp, Jasenovac.

When Israeli ‘Defence’ Minister Yoav Gallant began the genocide, he described the Palestinians as ‘human animals’ the very phrase that Himmler had used about the Jews, when justifying the  Holocaust on October 4 1943 to senior SS Generals. Gallant also promised to starve them and deny water and fuel. Also Nazi tactics.

Netanyahu invoked the example of Amalek, the tribe that god had commanded the Israelites to wipe out – every man, woman, child and infant was to be murdered.

The number of calls to genocide by Israeli politicians is limitless. Israeli Heritage Minister Amihai Eliyahu suggested that dropping a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip was “one of the possibilities”. Law for Palestine released a database of over 500 genocidal statements by influential Israelis, including the President and Cabinet members.

Wiping out the Palestinians is a very popular idea in Israel. The most popular car bumper sticker in Israel is ‘finish them off’. Indeed if the comparison with Nazi Germany is wrong it is because the level of anti-Semitism amongst ordinary Germans was far less than that in Israel.

When the presenters of Israel’s oldest podcast ‘two nice Jewish  boys’ said

If you gave me a button to just erase Gaza, every single living being in Gaza would no longer be living tomorrow. I would press it in a second’

there was no condemnation in Israel, let alone a prosecution as would happen if an Israeli Arab were to say the same about Jews. Incitement to murder Palestinians is not an offence in Israel.

There are some who go even further. Rabbi Eliyahu Mali, of the pre-military Yeshivah Shirat Moshe, said:

‘“Whoever comes to kill you... does not only include the young man aged 16, 18, 20, or 30 who is now pointing a weapon at you, but also the future generation (the children of Gaza), and those who produce the future generation (women of Gaza), because there is really no difference,”

In other words one should kill children as well as their mothers because they may become the fighters of the future. Compare this with what Himmler said about killing Jewish children in a speech on October 6th 1943.

I did not assume to have the right to exterminate the men… and have the avengers personified in the children to become adults for our children and grandchildren.

When pogroms against Arabs broke out in Israeli towns in 2021one user wrote

“We are no longer Jews today. People from Holon, Bat Yam and Rishon Lezion go out to bring war. Today we are Nazis.”

Today in Gaza, with the destruction of hospitals and the murder of patients and doctors and the detention of people like Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the Director of Kamal Adwan hospital, in the Sdei Teiman torture centre, we can see the degeneration of Israeli society before our eyes. A society where 65% of the population is opposed to criminal prosecutions of those who rape prisoners.

Indeed in some respects Israel is going beyond what the Nazis did. In Budapest it was the Nazis’ protégés in the Arrow Cross, a Hungarian Nazi party, that murdered doctors and patients at two Jewish hospitals (Maros Street and Varosmajor Street). The Gestapo did not touch the hospitals. In Berlin the Jewish hospital survived untouched until the end of the war.  It is Israel which has a peculiar attraction for destroying Palestinian hospitals.

We should also ask ourselves whether the Nazi destruction of Jewish synagogues during Kristallnacht is any different to the Zionist destruction of virtually every mosque in Gaza?

Ever since its creation Israel has laid claim to inherit the memory of the Jews who died in the holocaust. The reality, as Gaza shows, is that Israel inherits the memory of those who killed Europe’s Jews.

In the words of an article in the Jewish Chronicle quoting what I said at Palestine Expo in 2019, ‘Israel is Hitler’s Bastard Offspring’.

I leave you with just one thought. If the level of racism in Israel today had been present in Europe during the Holocaust it wouldn’t have been 6 million Jews who died but 7 or even 8 million.

With the new Public Order Bill we are sleep walking into a Police State

Two Israeli Palestine Action Activists Denied Bail by Bristol Crown Court as the Police & Courts Defend Elbit (WarCrimes“R”Us)

At the same time as Priti Patel is introducing legislation to further restrict and clamp down on the Right to Protest, the Metropolitan Police, who are a Political Police, have deliberately refused to investigate multiple breaches of COVID Regulations by Boris Johnson.

At the same time the Metropolitan Police have taken no action against Police Officers Guilty of Sexual Assault of 2 Black Children.

Last Monday two Israeli Palestine Action activists were remanded in custody by Bristol Crown Court. Palestine Action has taken direct action repeatedly against Elbit Systems, the Israeli firm which should be renamed WarCrimes“R”Us. Their success in closing down Elbit’s Oldham factory has enraged the Police and Political Establishment.

Public Order Bill

The Public Order Bill would allow the Police to put innocent people on electronic ankle tags and ban them from attending marches and demonstrations. These are police state measures.

Individuals would be prohibited from attending demonstrations if they have been convicted on two occasions of protest-related offences. These measures are a breach of the European Convention of Human Rights which is why the government is also proposing scrapping the Human Rights Act 1998.

People given such orders can also face other restrictions, including on their online activity, who they can talk to and where they can go.

People who want to attend a protest need not have ever committed any offence in order to be given “protest banning order” by the police.

Under the Public Order Bill, police will be given powers to monitor campaigners using electronic GPS tags, restrict their Internet activities and prevent them from attending protests. These are measures that would be condemned in Russia, Iran and China yet they are being proposed without a word of concern by that faithful servant of the British Establishment, the BBC.

After the shocking Police attacks on women at the Clapham vigil for Sarah Everard and the attack by Bristol Police on demonstrators against the last Police Bill, these are the latest measures that this government is taking to outlaw basic democratic rights. Effective protests are now being prohibited.

As a first step there is a Change.org Petition Don't electronically tag innocent people for attending protests but petitions are ignored by this government of the rich and powerful. I have also submitted a Parliamentary Petition.

The Public Order Bill is due to receive its second reading in the Commons. Civil rights group Liberty said the provision marks a “significant expansion of state surveillance on protesters” as the authorities will receive powers to monitor the activities of campaigners to ensure that they are complying with the order.

Liberty described the provision as “unprecedented and highly draconian,” warning that the orders would amount to “a ban on named individuals” fundamental right to protest.”

The police will be able to fit activists with ankle tags, which can be imposed for up to 12 months and perhaps longer if the order is renewed.

The Bill also proposes expanding stop-and-search powers and creating a new “locking on” offence, which would criminalise protesters who use bike locks or chains to secure themselves to each other or to objects.

Home Secretary Priti Patel’s justification is that the Bill is intended to tackle a “rise in criminal, disruptive and self-defeating tactics from a supremely selfish minority.”

Amnesty International warned that these proposals will “seriously curtail human rights” and has called on MPs to reject the legislation in its entirety.

Labour has also voiced opposition to the measures, with the front bench tabling a motion to block the Bill. However we know that Starmer has a police state mentalilty. We need a guarantee that a Labour government in its first parliamentary session will repeal both this Bill and the previous Police Bill.

Protest is a right, not a gift from the state. These proposals are inherently undemocratic and need to be resisted by all means necessary. See Activists could be tracked by GPS under draconian Public Order Bill

Police Assault on Black Children

If the Police are reluctant to investigate Elbit and Boris Johnson’s crimes there are ‘crimes’ that the Police do investigate and that is when Black children are suspected of committing them. Then they are only too eager to abuse their powers to the full.

In December 2020 there were two sickening incidents in which the Police, let us not beat about the bush, sexually assaulted two 15 year old girls in school.

Olivia, a  mixed-race girl, was handcuffed and had her underwear cut off in the presence of male officers. Olivia, who is autistic, subsequently tried to kill herself after a police strip search while she was menstruating.

Olivia was arrested with friends in December 2020 after having a disagreement with two boys who called the police claiming they were victims of an attempted knife-point robbery.

She said her daughter was searched at the scene and nothing was found, but was still taken into custody. She claimed she warned police her daughter had autism, learning difficulties and was self-harming.

Olivia was held in custody for more than 20 hours before being found to be in possession of a sharpened stick and a small blade, which her mother said was for the purpose of self-harming.

Six officers forcibly stripped Olivia, banged her head against the floor and carried out an intimate search in the presence of male police officers. According to her mother:

“Olivia was actually on her period at the time too. And they cut off her underwear in front of these grown male officers. She was absolutely distraught.”

Her mother told BBC’s File on 4 that the experience had a devastating impact on her daughter’s mental health. According to her mother

“She spent a lot of time in her room and she continued to self-harm in secret. And then, a few weeks later, she attempted suicide.”

Olivia later appeared in court accused of possession of a bladed weapon and was found not guilty after magistrates accepted the items were used for self-harming.

The Metropolitan Police said it was investigating a complaint from the girl’s mother. In other words they did absolutely nothing about it until the case was publicised.

Unbelievably Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor told File On 4 that strip-searches help to keep children safe while in custody.

What did the Met do? Did it immediately suspend the officers pending their prosecution? Not a bit of it. When the assault came to light the Met referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the so-called police watchdog. Given the record of the Police Lapdog it is unlikely to have anything to fear.

This followed news of another case, Child Q, a 15-year-old black pupil who was also menstruating. She was strip searched by female officers, also in December 2020 after being wrongly accused of possessing drugs. This sparked protests and a widespread backlash.

The Met on that occasion said an investigation was underway that would “determine the appropriateness of the search and the way that it was conducted”. One wonders what there is to investigate.

A spokesperson for the police stated that it was investigating a complaint from Olivia’s mother but “We have also received notification of a potential civil claim and therefore are unable to comment further at this stage” which is also a lie. A civil claim doesn’t stop you responding.

There is one demand that we can make. That schools should stop inviting police onto their premises. The Police do not protect school kids they are a threat to them, especially if they are Black.

Palestine Action

Meanwhile in Bristol, the Police were more than eager to protect WarCrimes“R”Us, who sometimes go by the name of Elbit Systems, for criminal damage. The so-called incident happened at Elbit in Aztec West on Sunday May 15 and all nine were charged overnight with burglary with intent to commit damage and criminal damage to property (valued at over £5,000) and remanded in custody. Police claimed that "intruders" had damaged a business premises.”

On Monday 23 May 7 of them were released on bail with onerous restrictions but two of them remain in custody, the pretext being that there is a risk they may flee abroad, although the Police are more than capable of keeping their passports. They are:

Ø   Ronnie Barkan, who is currently being held at HMP Bristol, 19 Cambridge Rd, Bishopston, Bristol BS7 8PS  0117 372 3100 Prisoner Number A4443EV and

Ø   Stavit Sinai who is being held at HMP EastwoodPark, Falfield, Wotton-under-Edge GL12 8DB, ( 01454 382100 Prisoner Number A4440EV

Palestine Action Activists Denied Bail, Remain Held in Prison’.

  • Palestine Action have called for greater resistance in the face of repression, urges supporters to join the campaign to ‘Shut Elbit Down’, marking Elbit as ‘vulnerable’ and ‘running scared’.
  • An ongoing campaign for the prisoners’ release

The Action was on Nakba day, which commemorates Israel’s forcible expulsion, i.e. ethnic cleansing of ¾ million Palestinians in 1947-8. They occupied and damaged the Bristol HQ of Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest arms company. It is only the two Israeli activists, Stav Sinai and Ronnie Barkan who remain in custody.

Throughout its nearly 2 years of existence, Palestine Action has been subject to a campaign of state repression and intimidation. However, the taking of political prisoners has set a concerning new precedent. In response, the group has promised ‘no backdown to the crackdown’, and called for heightened direct action against Elbit, who produce drones, ammunition, and chemical weapons. The company supplies the Israeli occupation military with 85% of its drone fleet.

The Police prefer to take action against those who try to prevent war crimes rather than the war criminals themselves.

This is part of the growing Police repression of direct action activists.

The move to greater repression has come after victory for the campaign in January, when direct action and community organising permanently shut down Elbit weapons factory in Oldham, Manchester. Palestine Action has seen constantly growing support both domestically and internationally, and it is suspected that these events have been in response to the success of the campaign. The British state is heavily allied with Israel and fears resistance to the Israeli arms trade in Britain. Notably, a delegation of Israeli police were recently received by the Metropolitan police, presumably to share tactics and strategies.

A Palestine Action spokesperson said:

“As the British state moves to crackdown on our campaign against Elbit – owing to its mass support in communities and our no-nonsense use of direct action, we say we won’t backdown to the crackdown, and will respond with greater resistance. Our two brave activists have  sacrificed their liberty in the fight to Shut Elbit Down, and we will fight day and night for their release.

Supporters can write letters to the two prisoners (email to palactprisoners@protonmail.com), or join protests in Bristol demanding their release. Anyone and everyone who longs to see a free Palestine: Now is the time to join Palestine Action, resist the crackdown, and Shut Elbit Down.”

Undoubtedly it is the actions of Direct Action Groups like Palestine Action, Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain that have led to the government attack on democratic rights and civil liberties. Coupled with the potential for an upsurge in trade union action.

Palestine Action activists who have been prosecuted so far have either been acquitted or had the charges against them dropped. It is clear that the actions against Elbit, whose only purpose is to prevent Israeli war crimes is lawful and proportionate.

Campaigners from Extinction Rebellion were acquitted and members of Insulate Britain released from prison in January after a string of convictions were overturned as a result of a decision by the Supreme Court in the case of Ziegler and others.

It is not a crime to commit a minor offence in order to prevent a greater evil. If someone breaks a door down in order to rescue a person inside a burning building, no one in their right mind would expect them to be charged with criminal damage. Yet the Police have done their utmost to protect Elbit’s right to commit war crimes.

Contrast this with Boris Johnson, who attended at least 6 parties at 10 Downing Street, in flagrant breach of the COVID Regulations that the Tories themselves introduced. The Police refused to issue penalty notices for any of them bar Johnson’s presence at his own birthday party. Indeed they have refused even to investigate his attendance at other parties that others were fined for. The only conclusion that can be drawn is that political considerations were paramount even though I’m not aware that the Prime Minister has any sort of legal immunity.

The Metropolitan Police initially refused to investigate any crimes. Their reason being that they don’t investigate "retrospective breaches of the law”! Presumably this was because the Met only investigate crimes after consulting Mystic Meg! The so-called Independent Office for Police Conduct rejected a complaint from Baroness Jones.

It was only when the Sue Grey Report was imminent that the Met began an investigation whilst at the same time telling her not to produce a full report. The inevitable inference is that the Police wanted to protect Johnson.

RELEASE ANTI-APARTHEID CAMPAIGNERS NOW!

We congratulate Palestine Action for their part in opposing Israeli apartheid, ethnic cleansing, occupation and war crimes.

We join Palestine Action in their call for the release of their activists who have been refused bail and remanded in custody, including two Israeli dissidents who have taken direct action against the Israeli arms’ manufacturer, Elbit Systems.

The Israeli war machine is not only responsible for the slaughter of Palestinian people but commits crimes internationally: armed the Rwanda genocide, and more recently armed the Myanmar genocide of the Rohingya people -- where Elbit upgraded Myanmar’s F-7 fighter jets.

People in the UK are increasingly aware of the frightening influence of the apartheid state of Israel in British politics.

Israeli influence can be seen in last week’s declaration by Home Secretary Priti Patel of her “unflinching and unequivocal” support for Israel.  In 2017 she was forced to resign from the cabinet, as UK International Development Secretary, following the exposure of her secret meetings with Israeli officials, which included a proposal to divert British aid to the Israeli military in the illegally annexed Golan Heights.

The official opposition is also guilty of bowing to Israel. UK Labour leader Keir Starmer declared “I support Zionism without qualification”.  His Labour Party campaigned door to door in the London Borough of Barnet with the pro-apartheid Israeli Labour Party (ILP) during the recent council elections. Senior Labour figures and ILP representatives discussed campaign tactics together. In fact, one new Labour councillor from that campaign is a former employee of the Israeli embassy.

We are outraged at the partisan decision by the Crown Prosecution Service to deny bail to pro-Palestine activists.

We welcome Palestine Action’s opposition to Israeli militarism: we must oppose all Israeli crimes, including the murder of beloved journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, and last week’s murder of 17-year-old Amjad al-Fayyed, and the arrest, torture and killing of children by the militarist and racist Israeli state.

Drop all charges! Release the anti-apartheid campaigners now!
