What the Jewish Left Doesn’t Need is Advice that It has No Responsibility for What Zionism and Israel Has Done In Their Name

A Reply to Shaul Magid’s Argument for Jewish Indifference to Genocide and an Evasion of Responsibility

Shaul Magid is a rabbi, Visiting Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at Harvard Divinity School, and Distinguished Fellow in Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College. Magid is also an opponent of Jewish anti-Zionism which he argues is irrelevant. Jews opposed to Zionism should turn in on themselves and ignore what is happening in their name.

In his article What Does the Jewish Left Want?, which is reprinted by Jewish Voice for Liberation, Magid argues that the Jewish left should ‘no longer focus on opposition to a state that many in the Jewish Left no longer support.’ In my response below I explain that if it doesn’t focus primarily on Zionism and the Israeli state, then this Jewish left is not only not a genuine left but it has no real purpose.

Shaul Magid

At a time when US and Western Imperialism is using Jewish people as its human shield, its moral alibi for support of the genocide in Gaza, to pretend that solidarity with the Palestinians and opposition to Zionism should be deprioritised is to do exactly what the Zionists want us to do.

It is to argue that Jews should become the bystanders to the slaughter in Gaza. Raul Hilberg excoriated, in Perpetrators, Victims and Bystanders, the ‘dull awareness’ and passive indifference of those who looked on as the Jews were exterminated in the holocaust, be they individuals or the Allied countries.

Hilberg spoke of the ‘human wall’ that bystanders had erected, of indifference and social isolation. What Magid is arguing is that Jews on the left should adopt a similar approach today. It is profoundly immoral.

Magid argued, in opposition to Jewish Voice for Peace’s statement adopting an explicitly anti-Zionist position, that they had ignored

a series of real “Zionist” possibilities where “justice and equality” were paramount.

What Magid really wants is to have his cake and eat it. His article is an exercise in self-indulgence. The real question is whether Jewish intellectuals have the courage and honesty to call Zionism out for what it is. Clearly Magid doesn’t possess that courage. Magid says

Many Jews who define themselves as anti-Zionist do not think the state of Israel should cease to exist. Rather, they contest Zionist hegemony.

If that is the case then they are not anti-Zionists and that is Magid’s problem.

For Magid the internal battle within the Jewish community takes precedence over genocide and ethnic cleansing. Is it any wonder that Palestinians get tired of this Jewish preciousness at a time when Palestinian children are being starved to death in the name of Zionism’s Jewish redemption?

If you are an anti-Zionist then Israel as a Jewish state must disappear. Not the people but the state. Israel must become normalised, like any other state. It must be a state of its own citizens, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

Magid accepts that Jewish anti-Zionists reject the idea that ‘Zionism is a requirement for legitimate Jewish identity in the twenty-first century.’’ But then he indulges in a semantic frivolity when he makes:

‘an important distinction... between Zionism and Israel. Israel is a country; Zionism is an ideology.’

No.  Zionism is the ideology of the Israeli state. It dictates the imperatives of Zionism, such as ethnic cleansing, Jewish racial purity, Jewish settlement at the Palestinians’ expense. This is a distinction without a difference.

What Magid demonstrates is that he rejects the special characteristic of Zionism as a settler colonial ideology whose aim was to achieve as pure a Jewish state as possible. In the words of Israel’s opposition leader, Yair Lapid:

“My principle says maximum Jews on maximum land with maximum security and with minimum Palestinians”

Quite amazingly Magid goes on to say, without so much as a flicker of awareness, that:

Like most countries Israel will choose how to govern according to will of its citizens, in Israel’s case, mostly, but not exclusively, its Jewish citizens (as those living under occupation have no political agency in the national polity), how to treat its minorities, how to deal with questions of justice and domination.

The whole point of anti-Zionism is that Israel is not like most countries. It is sui generis. Actually most countries don’t govern according to the will of their citizens but their elites and the capitalist ruling class. But let this pass. Magid is not a socialist.

In Israel’s case it pays no heed whatsoever to its Palestinian citizens. In Netanyahu’s words, ‘Israel is a state of its Jewish citizens not all of them’. That is why, being a Jewish state, it continues to dispossess what it calls Arab Israelis from their homes, in particular the destruction of the unrecognised villages of the Bedouin of the Negev such as Umm al-Hiran and Ras Jraba. Has Magid never heard of the policy of Judaisation of the Galilee and Negev, the Koenig Memorandum and Prawer Plan?

Does Magid think that there’s nothing of special interest in the fact that those living under occupation have no civil or political rights despite it being made clear that the West Bank will always remain part of Israel? Has he lost the ability to spell or even recognise the word Apartheid?

Magid quotes Joel Swanson’s assertion that

Historically, Zionism has never been one single concept. It has been a family of arguments, ... To say ‘Zionism’ without adjectives is already to erase its internal diversity.’

Here we really come to the crux of the argument. Shaul Magid’s illusion that there is a nice as well as a nasty Zionism. It is part of a ‘family’ that somehow along the way as it lost its focus or direction.

So let us spell it out for Shaul Magid who is blind to Zionism’s  racist reality. Zionism is what Zionism does. Zionism does not exist in the minds of a fragrant Jewish American Princess who still believes in fairy tales but in the settler attacks on Palestinian villages in the West Bank or the Death to the Arabs riots in Jerusalem each year.

Is there any difference between Herzog and Netanyahu, between Labour and Revisionist Zionism or did they merely argue about the means of achieving and maintaining a Jewish Supremacist state beholden to the West as an armed watchdog?

Magid clings to a Zionism that never existed. In fact cultural and socialist Zionism long ago disappeared in their own contradictions. Socialism is universal. Zionism is particularist. I realised that when I was 16 but Magid has yet to achieve political adolescence.

Magid points to a recent poll in which only a third of American Jews identify as Zionist whereas 88% support the concept of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. Clearly there is confusion among American Jews as Israel has proven beyond doubt that it cannot be both Jewish and democratic. Always it is forced to take the former path and jettison the latter, as the Jewish Nation State Law has proved.

The reality is that this was always a dishonest slogan of the hypocritical Zionist ‘left’. When confronted with a choice Zionism always preferred the Jewish to the democratic. In the words of Ahmed Tibi, an Arab member of the Knesset, Israel is Democratic for Jews and Jewish for Arabs.

It is this which has allowed Jewish neo-Nazis to become the third largest bloc in the Knesset and for Itamar Ben Gvir to become Police Minister in Israel. It is this which has led to Israeli Police acting like SS storm troopers against Israel’s Palestinian citizens. Israel is a state where torture is the norm (for Palestinians).

Yes there is massive confusion among American Jews but rather than offering clarity Magid seeks to take advantage of that confusion with his ridiculous essay.

Magid says that ‘Zionism served as an escape mechanism for Jews trying to escape a Europe collapsing around them.’ No that is absolutely not true. Haganah sent Feivel Polkes to Nazi Germany to persuade the Gestapo not to allow Jewish emigration to any place but Palestine. In exchange he offered to collaborate with them.

As a result Professor Franz Six, a senior SS official and head of Department II in the SD Main Office, who was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for war crimes in April 1948 wrote:

Pressure is being exerted on the Reich Deputation of the Jews in Germany in order to compel Jews emigrating from Germany to head only to Palestine and not to any other country.” [The Secret Contacts, Zionism and Nazi Germany, 1933-1941, Journal of Palestine Studies, Vol. 5 3/4 Spring/Summer 1976]

Ha’avara, the trade agreement between Nazi Germany and the Zionist movement, agreed in August 1933, not only broke the world-wide Jewish Boycott of Nazi Germany but it worsened the position for Jews trying to escape to other countries.

The Zionist movement consistently opposed rescue to any country bar Palestine. Magid fails to understand what has been called ‘cruel Zionism.’  See my book Zionism During the Holocaust (to purchase it contact me at tonygreenstein104@gmail.com).

Magid cites Yehiam Weitz’s article, “The Positions of David Ben Gurion and Yitzhak Tabenkin Vis-A-Viz the Holocaust of European Jewry” but has failed to understand it. Weitz cites Ben-Gurion on the Jewish refugee problem thus:

‘Both during the 1930s ... and during the second half of the 1940s, after the war's end - his position on this question was determined and indisputable; Ben-Gurion definitively and often crudely opposed ameliorating the position of Jewish groups by means other than their transfer to Palestine. He felt that any 'solution of the national problem outside of Eretz Israel, or ... solving the individual's distress by ignoring the national problem ... [means] undermining the foundations of Zionism and acting  as a temptation  which  every  Zionist  must  learn to  withstand completely.'

When it came to priorities Zionism and building the Jewish state came first. Weitz quotes Ben-Gurion’s notorious statement in the wake of Kristallnacht that if:

'it would be possible to save all the [Jewish] children in Germany by transferring them to England and only half of them by transferring them to Eretz Israel, I would choose the second possibility, because before us is not only the account of these children but the historical account of the Jewish people.’

In other words the interests of building the ‘Jewish’ state took precedence over saving Jewish children from Germany. Magid could also have mentioned Boas Evron’S, Jewish State or Israeli Nation and the fierce opposition to the Evian Conference, called by Eisenhower to solve the Jewish refugee question. Of course it did no such thing but the Zionist leadership were nonetheless frightened.

What Magid didn't mention was the identification with Israel of the far and even neo-Nazi right

Evron quotes the minutes of a meeting of the Jewish Agency Executive of 26 June 1938. Ben-Gurion was unremittingly hostile as he declared that

No rationalizations can turn the conference from a harmful to a useful one. What can and should be done is to limit the damage as far as possible.

A Russia member of the Zionist Executive Menachem Ussishkin was even more forthright

He hoped to hear in Evian that Eretz Israel remains the main venue for Jewish emigration. All other emigration countries do not interest him… The greatest danger is that attempts will be made to find other territories for Jewish emigration. [my emphasis]

These positions are quite clear in the essay he referred to yet Magid scrupulously refrains from mentioning the attitude of the Zionists to saving the Jewish refugees.

Magid asks Can the Jewish Left move beyond Zionism and anti-Zionism?’ and queries whether it can ‘no longer focus on opposition to a state that many in the Jewish Left no longer support?’

Thus missing out the whole point of why Jews on the left make opposition to Israel and Zionism a central focus of their work. Of course Magid knows the reason but refrains from spelling it out. Everything Israel does is in the name of the mythical ‘Jewish people’ and Jews. It is after all a self-proclaimed Jewish state.

It is therefore incumbent upon Jewish socialists and those who are genuinely on the Jewish left to say ‘Not in My Name’. The fact that Magid resiles from this suggests that his membership of the Jewish left is ephemeral.

Of course the Jewish left can do many other things but when being Jewish is one of the primary justifications given for imperialism’s support for Israel’s genocide and ethnic cleansing it is rank hypocrisy and cowardice not to make that a priority. If the Jewish left cannot focus on Zionism and its claim to represent Jews then it has no relevance.

Magid says that One of the fundamental differences between liberal Zionism and Jewish anti-Zionism is the exceptionalism that underlies the case of Israel’. That is of course true.  Liberal Zionists can, in theory, hold progressive positions on domestic American affairs but for Palestine there is an exception (Progressive Except Palestine). But that is increasingly untenable.

What Magid seems to be doing is providing a new way for this exceptionalism to operate by suggesting that Jews on the left simply avoid the issue altogether.

Why would Jews seek to avoid the one area where they have a contribution to make? Does he find it too uncomfortable? The difference between Magid and a self-declared Zionist is that he doesn’t openly defend the Apartheid state whereas ‘liberal’ Zionism does. Instead he makes excuses for it.

Jewish identity post-war has been forged in the crucible of Zionism. Jewish identity has changed for many a substitute religion. Without an alternative explicitly anti-Zionist Jewish identity Jewish identity become at best a self-indulgence and at worst an identity with genocide and racism.

Magid quotes Adi Ophir in his support:  to become non-Zionist one first must become anti-Zionist.” I wonder if Magid ever thought this through? How about saying that to become a non-racist one must first become an anti-racist. Perhaps our goal is to abstain from confronting racism? This is meaningless nonsense, verbal masturbation.

The fact is that for Jews non-Zionism is, at best, a half-way house to anti-Zionism. Of course being an anti-Zionist also means taking a position against US imperialism and its use of Jews as its moral alibi.

As a final flourish Magid says that

The land between the river and the sea remains the Jewish homeland and the Palestinian homeland. But the domination of one over the other will never yield the flourishing of either.

In this Magid could not be more wrong. He equates the oppressed with their oppressors. Palestine is the home of the Palestinians. It is not a Jewish homeland. My home is where I live, Britain. The United States is the home of millions of Jews. Israel is a settler colonial state that calls itself Jewish only in the racial and ethnic sense. Israel is a state of Jewish Supremacy where Jews, not Palestinians, exercise domination.

The eventual choice that Israeli Jews face is between becoming Jewish Palestinians or leaving. That was the choice that White South Africans faced and we should not make any exception for the Zionist settlers whose crimes far exceed those of White South Africans.

A Silent March on a Sunny Afternoon in Brighton & Hove Against Israel's Holocaust of Children in Gaza

As the Genocide & Starvation Continues Starmer and Our War Criminal Leaders Supply Israel with More Weapons While Corrupt Arab Rulers Welcome Trump

Brighton Nakba & Gaza Children's March 18.5.25

On Sunday Brighton & Hove PSC held a silent march of about 1,500 people through the streets of Brighton with white ribbons  representing Gaza's murdered children. People in Brighton warmly welcomed the march and the only dissent was from about 10 pathetic Zionists near the rallying point.

One idiot held a sign saying 'Stop the Lies - There is no Occupation'. There is no arguing with someone who denies a military occupation  in Gaza and the West Bank. Presumably the thousands of soldiers in the West Bank manning checkpoints are merely on  holiday.

Little Ms Hitler - aka Victorial Bhogal
Zionist genocide deniers are no different from neo-Nazi holocaust deniers. Both deny that which they support. Present among the handful of Christian and Jewish fascists was Little Miss Hitler, Victoria Bhogal who, when she saw me immediately complained to a nearby policeman. Presumably she objected to me calling her 'Miss' rather than  'Ms'. I shall take note in future!

In the past 19 months we have seen the collapse and impotence of International Law as Israel has been given a free hand to perpetrate every form of atrocity in Gaza.

Starmer supports cutting off food

In Britain Keir Starmer has lived up to the response he gave to LBC at the start of the Genocide that ‘Israel does have that right’ in response to a question as to whether Israel had the right to deprive the Palestinians in Gaza of food, water, and all the other essentials of life.

The fact that he later denied having said what everyone could see with their own eyes proves even more clearly that lies come second nature to a man without personality or principle. As Starmer says, he is a ‘(racist) Zionist without qualification.’

Starmer should be in the Hague for Complicity in Gaza's Genocide - Andrew Feinstein

We now learn that the embargo on weapons to Israel was yet another lie as Starmer’s government supplied more weapons to Israel in the last 3 months of 2024 than the Tory government supplied for the four year period 2020-23.

Starmer - The Murder of 8,000 Muslim Men and Boys in Srebenica Was A Genocide

The deceit and dishonesty of Starmer and Lammy is demonstrated by their denial that there is a genocide taking place in Gaza. Starmer, who even argued at the International Court of Justice that Vukovar in 1991, where 260 Croat men were killed was a genocide and who has repeatedly said Srebenica in 1995 was a genocide when 8,000 people were killed denies that Gaza constitutes a genocide. In Gaza, hundreds of thousands have almost certainly been murdered, including countless thousands of children, yet to Starmer it is not a genocide but an act of ‘self defence’.

Why?  Because the British government is actively complicit in the genocide, supplying both weapons and intelligence via RAF flights over Gaza. What this proves is that we are ruled by amoral war criminals and liars who are no better than their Nazi counterparts 80 years ago who were hanged in 1946 after the Nuremberg trials.

Those who deny the genocide in Gaza are the same as those who deny the Nazi holocaust. Article II of the Genocide Convention is quite clear.

genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

Israel’s attack on the people of Gaza is clearly aimed at destroying, in whole or in part, the Palestinian people. The pretext is that the aim is to destroy Hamas. If Israel was only concerned with destroying Hamas why would it attack every hospital, university, school, mosque, home and church even?

The idea that the  Command and Control centres are situated in hospitals for example doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Why would Hamas place their HQs in indefensible hospitals rather than its tunnels? The fact that we haven’t seen one single photograph showing Hamas firing out of a hospital is proof that Israel’s allegations are lies.  Just like the lies about the murdered 15 Red Crescent workers.

Were the Hamas C&C centres placed in Gaza’s reservoirs? Even the BBC admits that Hundreds of Gaza's water and sanitation facilities have been damaged or destroyed’.

What is obvious is that if you intend to build settlements in Gaza and ethnically cleanse its population then you need to destroy all civilian structures, especially hospitals.

It’s not as if Israel’s leaders have been coy about their objectives. At the very start of the genocide Israeli President, Yitzhak Herzog was quite clear that

It's an entire nation out there that is responsible. This rhetoric about civilians not aware, not involved—it's not true. They could've risen up, fought against that evil regime

Herzog was the former leader of the Israeli Labor Party a party no less war-like than Prime Minister Netanyahu, who was equally clear when he invoked the ancient enemy Amalek. God had told the Hebrew tribes to

Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

The Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, Nissim Vaturi called for Israel to ‘“wipe Gaza off the face of the earth,”.’ Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich complained that

We can’t, in the current global reality, manage a war. Nobody will let us cause 2 million civilians to die of hunger, even though it might be justified and moral, until our hostages are returned.

Smotrich was wrong. The leaders of the ‘free’ West have allowed genocide through the simple expedient of pretending it isn’t happening.

October 7th was the trigger, the pretext, to carry out the Zionists’ long planned ethnic cleansing of Palestine. What is happening now is the completion of the Nakba that took place in 1948.

Hamas mass rape a ‘hoax’ and ‘fake news’, says University of Sydney professor

After October 7 the Israeli government engaged in atrocity propaganda designed to justify the genocide that followed. We had the 40 beheaded babies hoax when only 1 baby died, shot accidentally shot. Then there was the mass rapes hoax which the New York Times did its best to propagate with its article Screams Without Words.. One of the main investigators, Anat Schwartz, was found, in February 2024 to have liked incendiary posts on social media, including one calling to "turn the strip into a slaughterhouse".

tony greenstein on march!

That too soon unravelled when the Intercept published on February 28 an exposé building on claims by Mondoweiss, Electronic Intifada and The Grayzone that there were inconsistencies in the story. The NYT itself was itself riven by doubts and its podcast The Daily withdrew an episode that was due to be shown.

It now turns out that there is not one case of alleged rape that will be  prosecuted. Southern District Prosecutor, Moran Gez, told YNet that:

Unfortunately, it will be very difficult to prove these crimes. In the end, we don’t have complainants. What was reported in the media compared to what will ultimately be established will look very different—either because the victims were murdered or because women who were raped are unwilling to come forward.

We reached out to women’s rights organizations and requested cooperation. They told us no one had contacted them. Some parents reached out to these organizations, asking what to do if something happened to their daughters, but they didn’t disclose the assaults.

In this area, I would temper expectations. I know the public is expecting action and understands the need to address the horrific sexual offenses and assaults that occurred, but the vast majority of these cases won’t meet the evidentiary threshold in court, and the criticism will ultimately fall on the prosecution—unjustly so.

Gez is a hard-line Zionist who advocates the death penalty for every Palestinian who participated in October 7th. She is convinced there were rapes yet by her own admission there were no complainants and no women’s rights organisation had been contacted by a woman claiming to have been raped. All she can do is speculate.

The allegations of mass rape, which were used to justify the genocide and the mass rape of Palestinians have, like the rest of Israel’s atrocity propaganda been shown to be bogus.

The claim that the 1,139 Israelis who died that day were the largest single massacre of Jews since the holocaust is also false. The largest killing of Jews took place between 1976 and 1982 in Argentina, a country that Israel supplied with weapons and military training. Up to 12% of the 30,000 who were murdered by the Junta were Jewish, despite Jews making up less than 1% of Argentina’s population. But because Israel was complicit in their murder this is not counted.

October 7th was indeed traumatic for Israel but not because it heralded a new holocaust. It was traumatic in the same way that slave and indigenous rebellions were traumatic. The trauma was not holocaust related but a consequence of the shock that was related to the settler colonial fear that the natives may one day rise up against them

Israel’s Destruction of Gaza’s Hospitals is Unprecedented – Its Murder of Doctors & Patients is Consistent with Zionism’s Genocidal Ideology

Even Nazi Germany Spared the Jewish Hospital in Berlin Which was Liberated in May 1945 with 800 Patients Still Alive

Berlin's Jewish Hospital

This is What Happened at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza

Before Israel's Attacks on Al Shifa

It is instructive to compare Israel’s systematic destruction of Gaza’s hospitals and health system with Nazi Germany. When Soviet troops liberated Berlin and entered the Jewish hospital on April 24 they were amazed to find that 800 patients, mainly Jews, were still alive.

In Budapest, between January 12 and 15, just before the Soviet Union liberated the city, The fascist Arrow Cross/Nyilas killing squads murdered around 240 patients at the Jewish hospitals in Maros and Városmajor Streets. Eugene Levai described this as ‘one of the blackest deeds of the Nyilas terrorism.’ [The Black Book of Martyrdom of Hungarian Jewry]

The Garden at the Back of the Hospital

American Values – John Stewart

Israel’s massacres at Al Shifa and Al Nasser hospitals exceeds even the foul deeds of the Hungarian Nazis. Biden, Sunak and Cameron have nonetheless continued to supply Israel with the means with which to carry out further massacres. We are ruled by war criminals.

The perpetrators of the Budapest massacres were quickly rounded up and from February 3 1945 onwards were hanged by the Peoples’ Courts. Unfortunately Biden, Sunak and Cameron, to say nothing of that worthy successor to the Nazis, Olaf Scholz, are unlikely to face a similar fate.

Gaza and Hatikvah

Israel’s systematic destruction of Gaza’s hospitals began with the attack on Al-Ahli hospital on October 17 when 500 people were killed. Israel blamed it on a misfired rocket from Islamic Jihad, which Biden of course rushed to corroborate.

The West were happy to accept Israel’s denial of responsibility despite the fact that the evidence pointed to Israel being responsible. Israel supplied a digitally manipulated version of an alleged conversation between two Hamas operatives admitting responsibility, but the ‘conversation’ was clearly a fake. The overwhelming evidence was that it was an Israeli missile that had struck the hospital.

Berlin's Jewish Hospital

Channel 4 Investigation into Who Bombed Al Ahli Hospital

Next came the attack on Gaza’s main hospital Al Shifa. The pretext this time was that it contained Hamas’s Command and Control Centre. Even BBC Verify refused to accept the ludicrous ‘evidence’ that Israel provided included a bag of weapons that Israel claimed was stored by an MRI scanning machine. The contents of the bag kept changing throughout the day.

The IDF released a video of a ‘Hamas laptop’ they found with a standardised IDF numbered charger and a Hebrew keyboard. They soon deleted the video from Twitter and uploaded it again with a blurred screen!

Even the BBC's Verify Casts  Doubt on Israeli Lies About Al Shifa

The real reasons for Israel’s attack on Gaza’s hospitals are not hard to fathom. If the purpose of Israel’s attack on Gaza is ethnic cleansing then it is necessary to destroy Palestinian civil society. The health care system therefore has to go.

Dr Walter Lustig - Director of the Jewish Hospital

The same is true for the bombing of mosques and churches. Christians and Muslims happily lived side by side under Hamas rule but Israel bombed both religions’ institutions. The world’s third oldest church, the Greek Orthodox St. Porphyrius was bombed as have nearly all Gaza’s historical sites. But perhaps that too was a Hamas command post! Or maybe the Catholic Church of the Holy Family where Israeli snipers killed worshippers, meriting a rare Vatican condemnation, was also a Hamas command post?

Phosphorus used in Gaza, British-Palestinian doctor says

Likewise the bombing of the trade union centre of the PGFTU in Gaza City which housed a bakery and kindergarten. It is obvious what Israel’s real game plan is and that explains Israel’s systematic destruction of Gaza’s universities and all aspects of civil society.

Israeli Ministers have been open about their intentions. Likud Minister Avi Dichter openly talked about a second Nakba. Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich last week called for the ‘total annihilation’ of Gaza without so much as a word of protest or condemnation by Netanyahu.

Death of Al Jazeera cameraman Samer Abu Dakka

But then there was no reaction from Genocide Joe Biden or his lapdogs Sunak and Cameron either. If Hamas had called for the wiping out of Israel then that would be front page news in the yellow press.

There are endless calls from Israeli Ministers for the mass murder of Palestinians, not just Hamas, including from Prime Minister Netanyahu with his invocation of Amalek. Israel’s Labor President Herzog did the same when he held that all of Gaza’s residents were legitimate targets. As the Guardian’s Chris McGreal noted, the language used by Israel is reminiscent of the genocide in Rwanda.

The West’s leaders are happy to justify any barbarity because to them the main enemy is Hamas whereas to most civilised people it is the Israeli state and its genocidiers who are the real criminals.

Western media outlets however either fail to report what Israeli Ministers say or treat each quote in isolation. Just as they refuse to see the context of Israel’s attacks as part of a strategy of ethnic cleansing.

The Destruction of Al Shifa Hospital

Before the International Court of Justice found a plausible case for genocide the US’s National Security Council spokesman John Kirby termed South Africa’s case as ‘meritless’. When the ICJ ruled all the Western countries immediately froze their aid to UNWRA whose job it was to prevent starvation in Gaza.

As Craig Murray, Britain’s former Ambassador said, the decision by Western states to stop funding to UNRWA, the UN agency charged with feeding the population of Gaza, was not taken in a single day. It was a pre-planned response to the ICJ. It was their way of showing their contempt for international law being applied to western imperialism. The International Criminal Court was established to judge tinpot African dictators not the West’s war criminals.

Israel of course supplied no evidence about UNWRA’s involvement in October 7 but what did that matter? The United States, Britain, Germany and the rest wanted to show their displeasure with the idea that they should be held to account. They were signalling their support for Israel’s policy of deliberately creating famine in Gaza.

So when Israel proceeded to attack other hospitals – Al Nasser, the Indonesian hospital etc., it didn’t even bother to offer any excuses because they knew that the Western leaders would cover for them and that the western media would say nothing and wouldn’t even bother to report it, still less place it in context.

North American Medical Doctors Statement

The bombing of ambulances, the murder of doctors, the invasion of hospitals were all ignored because at the end of the day the Western media reflects and amplifies the message of the West’s war criminal leaders that Israel’s goal is the elimination of Hamas rather than the elimination of the Palestinians.

What would have been condemned in an instant in Ukraine did not cause any reaction in CNN, the BBC or the Guardian. They chose not to join the dots because to do so would bring into question the imperialist narrative that Israel is engaged in ‘self-defence’.

White Phosphorous Used by Israel

Thus it was that when Britain’s pathetic Prime Minister Rishi Sunak rushed out of Downing Street to condemn the electors of Rochdale for electing George Galloway, warning of mobs on the street and Jewish children afraid to put their school uniforms on, he harkened back to the breakout from Gaza on October 7 when 1139 Israelis were killed, a third of them soldiers and over half the rest by Israel itself. Sunak ‘forgot’ to mention the 20,000 Palestinians, including 10,000 children who Israel had already murdered. To him they had never existed.

Popular Israeli Car Bumper Sticker

That Sunak, Starmer and Biden make no mention of the thousands of Palestinian victims, the deliberate targeting of people’s homes, ambulances etc. is no accident. Only Israeli lives matter. It took the murder of 7 aid workers of the World Food Kitchen before Western leaders found their tongues and condemned Israeli war crimes.

Please by Doctors in Gaza

But even then they failed to draw any conclusions viz. that Israel’s targeting of aid workers was an essential part of a strategy of creating famine as an ‘incentive’ to the Palestinians to leave Gaza.

Biden was perfectly happy for Israel to investigate itself and blame a couple of junior officers who, when the dust dies down, will be reinstated into the Israeli military. It is as if it were usual, when someone commits murder for them to be tasked with the investigation! Perhaps if we extend this to burglary and rape and have the burglars and rapists investigate themselves we can dispense with the police entirely!

When Russia targeted a hospital in Mariupul that the neo-Nazi Azov battalion had occupied, having evicted the staff and patients beforehand, the Western press was united in condemnation. ‘Three dead as maternity hospital hit by Russian air strike’ reported the BBC, yet the same BBC has consistently failed to report the death of thousands of Palestinians from Israeli air strikes. Racism? Perish the thought.

When Israel, in the case of Al Shifa hospital, cut off the power and left babies to die as their incubators failed, the press said next to nothing. Israel forced the doctors and medical personnel out and the babies bodies were then eaten by wild animals.

Israel’s actions are clearly illegal yet, as we have seen, international law has effectively been scrapped. The ICJ was too timorous to call what Israel was doing a genocide or indeed to order western states not to supply arms.

Article 18 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War is quite clear:

Civilian hospitals organized to give care to the wounded and sick, the infirm and maternity cases, may in no circumstances be the object of attack, but shall at all times be respected and protected by the Parties to the conflict.

Below I document the destruction of Gaza’s health system and also accounts from various doctors and health personnel of the situation on the ground.

As Surgeons, We Have Never Seen Cruelty Like Israel’s Genocide in Gaza

We urge anyone who reads this to publicly oppose sending weapons to Israel as long as this onslaught continues.

On March 25 the two of us, an orthopedic surgeon and a trauma surgeon, traveled to the Gaza Strip to work at Gaza European Hospital in Khan Younis. Our limited sleep was constantly interrupted by explosions that shook the hospital’s walls and popped our ears, even well after the United Nations Security Council declared a cease-fire must be implemented. When warplanes screamed overhead, everyone braced for a particularly loud and powerful explosion. The timing of these attacks always coincided with “iftar,” when families in this overwhelmingly Muslim county broke the daily fast of Ramadan and were most vulnerable.

We as Americans must acknowledge that we are responsible for this crime against humanity, now in its seventh month and unfolding in full view of the entire world.

We walked through the wards and immediately found evidence of horrifying violence deliberately directed at civilians and even children. A three-year-old boy shot in the head, a 12-year-old girl shot through the chest, an ICU nurse shot through the abdomen, all by some of the best-trained marksmen in the world. Every square inch of the hospital’s floor is taken up with makeshift tents where displaced families live, desperate to find some semblance of safety. They are the lucky several hundred who get to live indoors, unlike the tens of thousands sheltering outside on the hospital’s grounds.

As we got to work we were shocked by the violence inflicted on people. Incredibly powerful explosives ripped apart rock, floors, and walls and threw them through human bodies, penetrating skin with waves of dirt and debris. With the environment literally embedded in our patients’ bodies we have found infection control to be impossible. No amount of medical care could ever compensate for the damage being inflicted here.

As humanitarian trauma surgeons we have both seen incredible suffering. Collectively, we were present at Ground Zero on 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Boston Marathon bombing, and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti on the first day of these disasters. We have worked in the deprivation of southern Zimbabwe and the horrors of the war in Ukraine. Together we have worked on more than 40 surgical missions in developing countries on three continents in our combined 57 years of volunteering. This long experience taught us that there was no greater pain as a humanitarian surgeon than being unable to provide needed care to a patient.

But that was before coming to Gaza. Now we know the pain of being unable to treat a child who will slowly die, but also alone, because she is the only surviving member of an entire extended family. We have not had the heart to tell these children how their families died: burned until they resembled blistered hotdogs more than human beings, shredded to pieces such that they can only be buried in mass graves, or simply entombed in their former apartment buildings to die slowly of asphyxia and sepsis.

The United States has heavily funded and overwhelmingly armed what is called “the occupation” of Palestine, but the term is misleading. Israel’s first president, Chaim Weizmann, declared that the existence of the Palestinians was simply “a matter of no consequence.” Thirty years later, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan told the Israeli cabinet that the Palestinians “would continue to live like dogs…and we will see where this process leads.”

Now we know: This is where it leads. It leads to Gaza European Hospital, and to two surgeons realizing that the blood on the floor of the trauma bay and the operating room is dripping from our own hands. We Americans provide the crucial funding, weapons, and diplomatic support for a genocidal assault on a helpless population.

Come out, you animals’: how the massacre at al-Shifa Hospital happened

During the massacre at al-Shifa Hospital, the Israeli army shot patients in their beds and doctors who refused to abandon the sick, separated people into groups with differently-colored bracelets, and executed hundreds of civil government employees.

Human heads eaten by crows, unidentified and decomposing body parts, and hundreds of corpses piled up and buried in mass graves are all that remained of the victims of the massacre at al-Shifa Hospital. The grim scene was something out of a dystopian movie, the product of the two-week siege of Gaza’s largest hospital that ended in its total destruction.

Following the completion of al-Shifa’s decimation, the Israeli army announced that it had been one of the most successful operations since the start of the war, claiming that it had arrested hundreds of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad members in the medical compound. But the question that no one seemed to ask is how such a massive number of so-called “operatives” from Hamas and PIJ had gathered at al-Shifa with the full knowledge that the place had already been combed by the army once before and that Gaza City had been occupied by the army ever since.

The case of al-Shifa: Investigating the assault on Gaza’s largest hospital

Washington Post

JERUSALEM — Weeks before Israel sent troops into al-Shifa Hospital, its spokesman began building a public case.

The claims were remarkably specific — that five hospital buildings were directly involved in Hamas activities; that the buildings sat atop underground tunnels that were used by militants to direct rocket attacks and command fighters; and that the tunnels could be accessed from inside hospital wards. The assertions were backed by “concrete evidence,” Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said as he laid out the case in an Oct. 27 briefing.

After storming the complex on Nov. 15, the IDF released a series of photographs and videos that it said proved its central point.

Terrorists came here to command their operations,” Hagari said in a video published Nov. 22, guiding viewers through an underground tunnel, illuminating dark and empty rooms beneath al-Shifa.

But the evidence presented by the Israeli government falls short of showing that Hamas had been using the hospital as a command and control center, according to a Washington Post analysis of open-source visuals, satellite imagery and all of the publicly released IDF materials. That raises critical questions, legal and humanitarian experts say, about whether the civilian harm caused by Israel’s military operations against the hospital — encircling, besieging and ultimately raiding the facility and the tunnel beneath it — were proportionate to the assessed threat.

The Post’s analysis shows:

  • The rooms connected to the tunnel network discovered by IDF troops showed no immediate evidence of military use by Hamas.
  • None of the five hospital buildings identified by Hagari appeared to be connected to the tunnel network.
  • There is no evidence that the tunnels could be accessed from inside hospital wards.
