Shop Steward Expelled for ‘anti-Semitism’ by a Racist and Corrupt Trade Union

The GMB Expels Pete Gregson using the IHRA Definition of ‘Anti-Semitism’ which even its author, Kenneth Stern, has Disavowed

When Labour’s National Executive decided on September 4th 2018, to adopt the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, which conflates anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, Peter Gregson launched his own petition:
The IHRA has been savaged by a host of academic and legal scholars. It is incoherent, open ended, uncertain, illogical and barely literate.
The petition which attracted the ire of the GMB and Rhea Wolfson
According to Geoffrey Robertson QC, the renowned human rights barrister, the IHRA definition is, ‘not fit for purpose’.  Sir Stephen Sedley, the Jewish former Court of Appeal Judge wrote that the IHRA ‘fails the first test of any definition: it is indefinite.’ Hugh Tomlinson QC declared that the IHRA had
a potential chilling effect on public bodies which, in the absence of definitional clarity, may seek to sanction or prohibit any conduct which has been labelled by third parties as antisemitic without applying any clear criterion of assessment
The GMB under Gary Smith has acted as a scab union effectively inviting Peter's employer to dismiss him
The actual IHRA definition itself is 38 words, the salient part of which states that ‘Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews which may be defined as hatred of Jews.’ What is a ‘certain perception’? Who knows. If anti-Semitism may be defined as hatred of Jews what else might it be defined as? And if anti-Semitism is to be defined in terms of hatred what about someone who simply dislikes Jews but doesn’t hate them. In short the definition is useless as an analytical tool. It is no wonder that David Feldman, who was Vice-Chair of the Chakrabarti Inquiry and Director of the Pears Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism described the IHRA as ‘bewilderingly imprecise.’
The IHRA definition provides 11 illustrations of ‘anti-Semitism’ such as ‘Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.’
In order to make their case stick, the GMB has to lie about Peter's beliefs accusing him of being  a holocaust denier - this accords with Zionist attempts to invent holocaust denial where it doesn't exist
This is the section that Peter Gregson defied with his petition. This illustration is a good example of the incoherence of the definition. There is no connection between the first and second halves of the example. It is a non-sequitur. It is quite possible to support a Jewish right to self-determination and still believe that Israel is a racist state. The language is a good example of bad fourth form English. How can the existence of anything be an endeavour?
Criticism of a union official is impermissible for a cossetted bureaucracy
There is a simple definition of anti-Semitism in the Oxford English Dictionary which, unlike the 500+ words of the IHRA is only 6 words long: ‘Hostility to or prejudice against Jews’ which also catches attitudes that fall short of hatred. As Tony Lerman, a distinguished expert on anti-Semitism and former Director of the Institute of Jewish Policy Research wrote:
The more the definition is held up to the light and subject to public scrutiny, the more we see holes and cracks in its flimsy fabric. Not only is there now overwhelming evidence that it’s not fit for purpose, but it also has the effect of making Jews more vulnerable to antisemitism, not less...’

The drawback of the OED definition for the Zionists is that it doesn’t mention Israel. As the inauguration today of Yair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s new President shows, most fascists, racists and bigots are also ardent supporters of the Israeli state.
Even the person who drew up the IHRA, Kenneth Stern, has become disillusioned at the misuse of his definition, which was never intended to brand people as anti-Semites. In written testimony to the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee he wrote that:
The definition was not drafted, and was never intended, as a tool to target or chill speech on a college campus. In fact, at a conference in 2010 about the impact of the definition, I highlighted this misuse, and the damage it could do.

Labour’s NEC adopted the IHRA as a way of buying off its Zionist critics. What it has done is to create a whole new set of problems around the rights of free speech. It is no accident that the GMB, which has traditionally been pro-Zionist has been the first to try and implement the IHRA. Traditionally the GMB has been corrupt, racist and politically backward.
Rhea Wolfson

Peter Gregson was suspended because of his petition when former Labour NEC member and the Glasgow GMB Organiser, Rhea Wolfson put in a complaint about ‘anti-Semitism’. He was accused of ‘anti-Semitic’ harassment of Ms Wolfson.  It is very clear from his statement that all he ever did was engage in political polemic. Nothing that he said was remotely anti-Semitic or indeed abusive.
Gary Smith - represents all that is wrong in  British Trade Unionism - the idea of a fair hearing is alien to someone who acted as judge and jury in his own cause, having organised the kangaroo court too
I wrote on the 28th November to the GMB’s Scottish Regional Secretary, Gary Smith, who was handling the case offering to be a witness in the case.  I happened to know Gary some years ago in Brighton when, as Secretary of the Unemployed Centre, we had organised support for the workers at the Hollingdean Refuse Depot who had occupied the site as part of the campaign to get rid of SITA, a French company which the Labour council had brought in to run the refuse collection. The dispute was successful. At that time Gary was a radical young organiser.  Clearly as he has climbed the GMB’s greasy ladder he has abandoned his radicalism which included support for breaking the law.  Now he is just another apparatchik.
I pointed out to Smith that he could not be both the Prosecutor, the person organising the hearing and deciding who could be called and what would be allowed by way of a defence. I received no reply to this or another email.  Smith had clearly decided that Peter was guilty and he was not going to allow ‘grandstanding’ i.e. any attempt to mount a defence. On the day of the hearing a Rabbi who had travelled up from Manchester at his own expense was barred from the hearing.
The whole procedure that Peter faced has been wholly unfair as the letter from his solicitor Daniel Donaldson explains. Donaldson explicitly calls the GMB disciplinary  tribunal a ‘kangaroo court.’ In his letter of 17th December to Smith he states, reiterating my own correspondence that:
You are a member of the GMB regional committee, you have conducted the investigation, you have determined the procedure and you are also prosecuting my client before the same committee. This approach to a disciplinary is inherently unfair and therefore unlawful.
This is the kind of justice that they are used to in Rhea Wolfson’s racial paradise in Israel , but it is contrary to British notions of natural justice and due process.
As I said to Smith, this hearing would make a kangaroo hang its head in shame. Gary Smith has become just another right-wing official in the GMB, a union which is a byword for corruption. Peter Gregson is the only shop steward for 24,000 members in the whole of the Lothian NHS. If Gary Smith was actually doing his job instead of harassing the only shop steward that does exist he would ensure that the GMB had some measure of shop floor organisation in peoples’ workplaces. Smith seems completely unconcerned about the effect of expelling Peter on the GMB’s own (lack of) organisation.
In reality GMB officials have never been particularly concerned about the effectiveness of representation for their members. Their main concern has been such mundane matters as how best to claim and inflate their expenses. Living on a far higher salary than their members they are cut off from life on the shop floor.
What is particularly reprehensible is that a member of the union has been expelled for calling out a state which is clearly racist.  I gave as examples to Smith the fact that in Israel Palestinian (but not Jewish) children as young as 12 are routinely detained, usually in night time raids on their homes.
We have recently had the obscene case of the lynch-mob murderer of an asylum seeker sentenced to 4 months imprisonment whereas a 16 year old girl, Ahed Tamimi, was sentenced to 8 months for daring to slap a heavily armed soldier.
As the National’s Martin Hannan reported Pete Gregson was suspended for describing Israel’s actions in ethnically cleansing Palestine of some 700,000 refugees as racist. To the corrupt and racist barons of the GMB ethnic cleansing by a settler colonial state is perfectly acceptable whereas criticism of it is racist.
This is the upside down world of Gary Smith and the GMB’s General Secretary Tim Roache who on the basis of a fraudulent ‘election’ in 2016 backed Owen Smith in his challenge to Jeremy Corbyn.
Peter Gregson’s petition has now secured over 1,200 signatures from members of the Labour Party. Given that Israel’s Knesset earlier in the year passed the Jewish Nation State Law which explicitly grants national rights to one section of the population, Jews and denies them to non-Jews, it is difficult to know how else to describe the GMB’s decision to expel Peter Gregson other than racist. In the words of Ha’aretz’s Mordechai Kremnitzer, the ‘Jewish Nation-state Law Makes Discrimination in Israel Constitutional’.  What is it that Gary Smith or Tim Roache don’t understand about that? How else do you describe opening fire on unarmed demonstrators in Gaza, killing over 200 and wounding 20,000 with the use of high velocity ammunition?
Although Labour Against the Witchhunt didn’t support Peter’s petition because of problems with its wording we recognise that it represents a significant opposition in the Labour Party to the attempt to curtail if not abolish freedom of speech.
Of course the corrupt and racist GMB has never had freedom of speech. The regional barons ruled without opposition. The union exists primarily for the benefit of its highly paid officials not its membership. However even Roache and co. will have difficulty defending this particularly iniquitous decision. If Peter’s expulsion is not revoked then GMB members should join another, genuine trade union.
To see Pete’s website and his page on the IHRA and his Petition please click here
The letter of expulsion is here.  It is fundamentally dishonest. It alleges that Peter is guilty of ‘accusing Israel of inventing or exaggerating the holocaust’ and goes on to say that ‘For our Union holocaust denial or claiming the holocaust was exaggerated is simply unacceptable.’ The only problem is that this is a lie. Nowhere has Pete denied that the Holocaust occurred or that it was exaggerated. Peter specifically refers to the 6 million who died (though the actual figure will never be known). What he has said, which is true, is that Israel uses the Holocaust for political purposes and that it is used to counter Palestinian claims to justice. Which is what Jewish academic Norman Finkelstein, amongst others, wrote in The Holocaust Industry.

If Corbyn Doesn’t Slay the ‘Anti-Semitism’ Dragon It Will Slay Him

By refusing to confront the Israeli State's representatives in Labour, Corbyn is Building his own Funeral Pyre

"What started organically, therefore, morphed into a planned campaign to create a coalition of mostly Jewish activist academics, pro-Israel and national representative bodies in the Jewish Diaspora, and the aforementioned major American Jewish organizations to take the discussions in an increasingly political and ideological direction, linking anti-zionism and antisemitism ever more closely. A key player in and growing influence on this campaign was the Israeli government, pursuing a new policy since the late 1980s, through its then-recently-established Monitoring Forum on Antisemitism. The policy aimed at establishing Israeli hegemony over the monitoring and combatting of antisemitism by Jewish groups world wide. This was coordinated and mostly implemented by Mossad representatives working out of Israeli embassies"

Tony Lerman was the founder of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research before he was forced out by people like Stanley Kalms, Tory Party Treasurer, Zionist and Director of IJPR.

It sometimes seems as if Corbyn has a death wish. Not only does he ignore the evidence that the anti-Semitism campaign has been manufactured to order, faked with the sole purpose of removing him, but he is doing his best to keep it alive. Personally ordering his supporters, Ken Livingstone and Christine Shawcroft, to resign in order to satisfy the Zionist and Labour Right witchhunters is madness. Corbyn's performance is indicative of someone who with a death wish, intent on building up his own funeral pyre.

Jonathan Arkush, the outgoing President of the Board of Deputies, which has been to the fore in making false allegations of anti-Semitism, is not only a right-wing Tory but a stupid one.  Arkush’s concerns about ‘anti-Semitism’ did not prevent him from welcoming Donald Trump and the anti-Semitic alt-Right to power in America. This despite the fact that Trump’s campaign openly employed anti-Semitic stereotypes and themes. [Anti-Semitism is no longer an undertone of Trump’s campaign. It’s the melody].
Donald Trump and his administration combine ardent Zionism with anti-Semitism.  Their campaign employed a variety of subtle and not so subtle anti-semitic messages such as the advert above - Crooked Hilary with the slogan 'most corrupt candidate ever!' inside a Star of David.  It couldn't be more blatant yet the Zionists didn't utter a peep.  Ha'aretz's headline said it all: Trump's Win, the Greatest Victory for anti-Semitism in America Since 1941
Arkush though had no hesitation in welcoming Trump to power despite the fact that his administration included open fascists like Sebastian Gorka, who is a member of a group called the Vitézi Rend (Order of Vitéz), a far-right nationalist group in Hungary originally founded by Miklós Horthy, Hungary's pro-Nazi war-time dictator who presided over the deportation of nearly half a million Jews to Auschwitz.
The 'enough is enough' demonstration that the Zionists called on March 26th was the first 'antiracist' demonstration that the Board has ever called.  In the 1930's and 1970's they told the Jewish community to stay indoors and ignore the fascists - prominent amongst those attending were those well known anti-racists Norman Tebbit and Ian Paisley's DUP!!
Arkush doesn’t even bother to hide his views or disguise them in any way.  He doesn't do subtlety yet still Corbyn and McDonnell don’t get the message.
In his final speech before retiring as President of the Board of Deputies, Arkush said of Corbyn that “he has views which are antisemitic, and he has problematic views”
In the Guardian of 30th May Arkush was quite explicit as to what he meant by ‘anti-Semitism’.  The problem was Corbyn's attitude to Israel:
“Delegitimising the state of Israel is antisemitic,” Arkush told the newspaper. “He was a chairman of Stop the War, which is responsible for some of the worst anti-Israel discourse.
“If he shares the prevalent discourse about Israel, then that view is unquestionably antisemitic.”
Chakrabarti, who was never a radical or a socialist, joined the ranks of the witchhunters in forcing Livingstone out
In other words anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism are one and the same thing, yet the Right in the Labour Party throw a fit when people say the ‘anti-Semitism’ allegations are really about Israel.  They accuse us of believing in conspiracy theories, refusing to face reality, yet here is the leader of British Zionism confirming what we have been saying all along, that the fake anti-Semitism campaign is about Israel and the Palestinians.
To her credit, Rhea Wolfson, a Jewish member of Labour’s National Executive Committee defended Corbyn describing him as ‘one of the most principled people in politics’. Rhea was also correct to say that
Arkush’s claims are entirely without foundation. The evidence he cites? Jeremy’s criticisms of the actions of the Israeli government.  Criticising the actions of the Israeli government is not antisemitic.
Corbyn betrays his friends in order to appease his enemies
The problem though is that Rhea Wolfson remains a member of the Jewish Labour Movement, a group that has done more than most to spread the false anti-Semitism narrative. The JLM calls the Israeli Labour Party its ‘sister’ party. The leader of this racist party, Avi Gabbay, has just cut links with Corbyn because of
‘the hostility that you have shown to the Jewish community and the antisemitic statements and actions you have allowed”
Labour Friends of Israel tweet - blaming the murder of what is now over 115 Palestinians on the Palestinians.  In blaming Hamas, these racists denied Palestinians any agency.  Not one word of condemnation of Israeli snipers
If Rhea Wolfson means what she says then logically she should also cut links with the JLM, a group which, as the Al Jazeera under-cover programme The Lobby made clear, is in bed with the Israeli Embassy and its Ambassador Mark Regev.
The JLM is the overseas wing of the Israeli Labour Party which operates inside the British Labour Party. The Israeli Labour Party is not a left-wing party, it is a racist and nationalist party. It has never made a claim to be socialist or indeed anti-racist.  It openly says that Jews and Arabs can't live together.  It believes that the Arab birthrate in Israel is a 'problem'.
Gabbay supported the the deportation of 40,000 Black African refugees back to Eritrea and Sudan because they were neither White nor Jewish. Party leader Gabbay forces Zionist Union to back expulsion of migrants The ILP also supports the mass murder of unarmed demonstrators in Gaza in the past 4 weeks.
This little fascist Harry Saul Markham has a picture of Menachem Begin on his teeshirt - Begin was condemned by Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt and 20 other Jews in a letter to the New York Times in December 1948 for founding Herut 'a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties'
And yet despite all of this, when some of us have pointed out that the ‘anti-Semitism’ attacks have really been about Israel, Arkush and company complain that ‘we are accused of “smearing” Corbyn’.  Perish the thought!

Arkush and his side-kick, Jonathan Goldstein of the Jewish Leadership Council wrote an Open Letter to Corbyn in which they made it crystal clear that the ‘anti-Semitism’ they were talking about was anti-Zionism:

‘“Again and again, Jeremy Corbyn has sided with antisemites rather than Jews. At best, this derives from the far left’s obsessive hatred of Zionism, Zionists and Israel. At worst, it suggests a conspiratorial worldview in which mainstream Jewish communities are believed to be a hostile entity, a class enemy,”

If final proof were needed about the bogus nature of the ‘anti-Semitism’ claims, then Arkush gave the game away when he called the Jewish group that Corbyn visited to spend Seder with, Jewdas, a‘ source of virulent anti-Semitism.’.  Adding for good measure, horror of horrors, that not all of them were Jewish!
Labour Friends of Israel represents the Israeli Embassy inside the Labour Party - it talks of a 'cycle of violence' as if there were gang warfare in Gaza rather than an 11 year siege by Israel - not one word of condemnation of the deliberate shooting of unarmed demonstrators by Israel
Of course it does not need a genius to work out what the 'antisemitism' smears are about. The latest anti-Semitism furore, was sparked of by Luciana Berger MP, who produced a 6 year old, long erased mural, whose destruction Corbyn had opposed on free speech grounds.  This was such an obvious pretext that you would need an IQ of under 60 not to get it.

It had been pulled out of a hat, like a rabbit at a party, in time for the local elections.  The purpose was obvious.  To try and do as much damage as possible to Labour's local election results.  I have no doubt that at this very moment similar pretexts are being dusted down for use in the future.

I will therefore make a prediction.  Just as last year I was almost alone in predicting that Corbyn would come out of the General Election in a better shape than when he went into the election [see here and here] so I predict that unless Corbyn faces down the false anti-Semitism allegations he will fail to become Prime Minister.  The purpose of the anti-Semitism witch-hunt was not to remove me or Marc Wadsworth or Ken Livingstone.  It is to remove Jeremy Corbyn.  We are just collateral damage.  If Corbyn cannot see that then he does not deserve to become Prime Minister.

Corbyn has behave utterly stupidly and cowardly in betraying his friends to appease his enemies.  Telling Christine Shawcroft to resign from the NEC was the sign of some who was in panic mode.  To tell Livingstone he had to go, and there is absolutely no doubt that Jeremy Corbyn was personally involved, was even more stupid.  Livingstone was a strong and capable supporter.  Appeasing John Mann by sacrificing your closest political ally is shameful.
Corbyn's idiotic comment about 'pockets of anti-semitism' was used against him at the Zionists' 'antiracist' demonstration

The depths of Corbyn’s idiocy was betrayed in his comment that there are ‘pockets’ of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.  In giving sustenance to the idea that anti-Semitism is a living phenomenon in the Labour Party Corbyn was also giving sustenance to his enemies.  When we turn around and point out the bogus nature of the ‘anti-Semitism’ allegations the Right point to Corbyn and say that even he agrees with them. Corbyn is thus giving substance to a campaign whose purpose is to remove him.

Likewise Momentum’s owner and dictator, Jon Lansman, with his crass comments that Labour’s anti-Semitism was ‘unconscious’.  If antisemitism is unconscious then it isn't be much of a problem.  If only the Windrush victims had faced ‘unconscious’ racism they would be laughing.

The fact is that Jews in Britain don’t experience state racism, deportation, police violence, discrimination in the jobs market, false imprisonment etc.  Anti-Semitism exists at the margins.   Indeed most of what is called ‘anti-Semitism’ is simply a reaction to the war crimes Israel perpetrates in the name of Jews.

In Britain today it is hard to call antisemitism a form of racism.  It is more a form of prejudice.  It has no relationship to the nexus of power in this country.  Jews are White NOT Black.  Jews are not an ethnic minority or an oppressed group.  They suffer at worst marginal prejudice.  Indeed most prejudice results from the actions of Israel as a self-declared Jewish state.

The ‘anti-racism’ demonstration of March 26th called by the Board of Deputies was the first such demonstration that the Board had ever called.  When it came to opposing Sir Oswald Moseley’s British Union of Fascists in the 1930’s or the mass mobilisation of the Anti Nazi League in the 1970’s the Board preached complete pacifity.  Jews were recommended to stay at home.  When it comes to Israel’s defence then the Board is all in favour of demonstrating.  In other words when it comes to defend Jews against real anti-Semitism, the Board lies down and whimpers.  when it comes to defending Israel the Board comes out with guns a blazing.

Let me however make another prediction. Although the ‘anti-Semitism’ allegations have died down now that the local government elections are out of the way the embers are still glowing.  Come the Labour Party conference in the autumn or the local elections next year or possibly a general election if Brexit blows up in May’s face, then ‘anti-Semitism will resurface.

Why?  Because ‘anti-Semitism’ is a potent weapon in the hands of the Right.  It is difficult to attack Corbyn over rail nationalisation or austerity or the other popular elements of Labour’s programme. However anti-Semitism is the Achilles heel of the Labour left.  It gives the Right, especially the Labour Right, a sense of righteousness that defending poverty and cuts doesn’t give them.

Of course any idiot should be able to see that if the Sun, Daily Mail, Express and all the rest of the yellow press are so opposed to ‘anti-Semitism’ in Labour at the same time as they attack or demonise Black people, then there must be a catch. How can one oppose ‘anti-Semitism’ and support all other forms of racism unless of course, ‘anti-Semitism’ is a code word for supporting the Establishment, Capitalism and the politics of Imperialism.  'Antisemitism' is really about foreign policy.

That is why when John McDonnell says he could weep’ over Labour’s ‘anti-Semitism’ one wonders what he’s going to do when faced with the determined resistance of the financial and industrial capitalists when he tries to nationalise the utilities. The attack on Labour for ‘anti-Semitism’ is so patently transparent that one wonders what kind of idiot it is that doesn’t see it.  McDonnell is now coming under attack from The Telegraph for failing to dissociate himself from the Labour Representation Committee, of which he is honorary President, because of the LRC’s support for the victims of the anti-Semitism witchhunt like Jackie Walker.

Perhaps McDonnell will weep and resign from the LRC proclaiming that he didn't know that they opposed the witchhunt of socialists?

‘Anti-Semitism’ is the gift that keeps giving. It is the only thing that the Labour Right have going for them.  It is what puts a left sheen on racists like Keir Starmer and John Mann. If Corbyn cannot slay the ‘anti-Semitism’ dragon it will slay him. It cannot be avoided because the Right, which means the BBC and the Tory tabloids, The Guardian included, won’t let it die down.

If Corbyn had faced down the false anti-Semitism narrative two years ago when he was accused of consorting with holocaust deniers then he wouldn’t be facing these never ending attacks now.  The time has come to put this beast to sleep alongside those who insist on breathing life into what has become the equivalent of the political undead.

Being black is their only crime

Thousands of Israelis are attempting to stop the deportation of African refugees

African asylum seekers
Although Israel was an early signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has never welcomed refugees who are not Jewish. It has admitted in total about 200 such refugees since its foundation,1 the most publicised incident being Menachem Begin’s acceptance of 66 Vietnamese in 1977, who had been rescued by an Israeli ship.

In 2007, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert granted temporary residence permits to 498 Sudanese asylum-seekers.2 However they were not given the right to reside and, as the number of African migrants increased to over 60,000 by 2013, the refugees were confronted with an organised and systematic campaign to drive them out. The vast majority were fleeing authoritarian regimes in Eritrea and Sudan.

As Lia Tarachansky explained when the refugees first arrived, they were welcomed by the Israeli public: “But when the government of Netanyahu decided to take a 90-degree turn on the treatment of the African refugees, what resulted was a full-out war against them.”3 Many had chosen Israel because they believed its propaganda that it was a democracy and also because it was easier to reach than Europe.

Most refugees have been living in poor and overcrowded neighbourhoods in southern Tel Aviv. Dozens squatted in a park across the street from the city’s main bus station for weeks on end. A handful of high-profile incidents, including an alleged rape of an 83-year-old woman by an Eritrean asylum-seeker in 2012, were blown up by Israel’s media into an attack on all asylum-seekers.
Israel has one of the highest rates of rape and sexual assaults in the world. According to the Association of Rape Crisis Centres in Israel, one in seven Israeli women will suffer rape in her lifetime and one in three will experience a sexual assault.4 This, however, did not stop allegations against the refugees that were similar to those levied in Nazi Germany. Just as individual crimes by German Jews were attributed to the whole Jewish community, so the same is true of asylum-seekers in Israel.

In November 2010, the Israeli government approved a plan to build a massive detention centre, Holot, in the Negev desert to hold thousands of asylum-seekers and their families before deportation. Holot is the biggest prison for refugees in the entire developed world. Israeli police then embarked on mass racial profiling and went down the streets of Tel Aviv asking for IDs from anyone who was brown or black - and packed them off to this prison.
Netanyahu stirring up racial conflict in South Tel Aviv
Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu was quite clear as to the reasons for his hostility to the refugees - they were a threat to the Zionist ‘dream’: “We must stop the mass entry of illegal migrant workers because of the very serious threat to the character and future of the state of Israel.”5 The very existence of a ‘Jewish’ state was apparently threatened by the presence of 60,000 refugees. In the racial fantasies of Netanyahu: “If we don’t stop their entry, the problem that currently stands at 60,000 could grow to 600,000, and that threatens our existence as a Jewish and democratic state.”6
As Lia Tarachansky pointed out,
the refugees are less than .001% of the population, and yet they are constantly being talked about as though they are threatening Israel’s Jewish majority - a demographic threat which is something that the state of Israel uses frequently against the Palestinian minorities in Israel.7
When Palestinians were expelled in 1948, this was said to be necessary to create a Jewish majority state. But, incredibly, those who tried to return were called ‘infiltrators’. Only the warped mentality of settler colonialism could label those who were indigenous to the land from which they had been forced out, and whose families had lived there for centuries, in such a way. But Israel is the most racist state in the world - a state where a plurality of Jews - 48% - want to see the deportation of Israeli Arabs. According to a poll published in 2007, 75% do not wish to live with an Arab in their apartment block.8
Sheffi Paz leads protest against asylum seekers
Nor does Israel comply with the biblical injunction, “You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy10:19). This most certainly does not form part of Zionist values. There are some 50 references in the Old Testament to befriending the stranger (or refugee), but Israel’s ultra-right rabbinical establishment is strangely oblivious to all of them.9 Zionism prefers the book of Joshua, which instructed the Israelites to wipe out the non-Jewish inhabitants of Canaan - every man, woman and child.

Israel is not a fulfilment of biblical prophecy about the return of the Jews to the Promised Land. It is a settler colonial state, the brainchild of evangelical Christians, for whom biblical and imperialist imperatives coincided. Yet Israel is only a Jewish state in that the settler population is racially defined as ethnically Jewish. Being Jewish means having as few non-Jews as possible. Israel’s Arabs are a barely tolerated fifth column, but black African refugees are neither Jewish nor white - hence they must go. This is the logic of Zionism.

The need for Jewish racial purity was what led to the ban on a book from the high school syllabus in Israel - Borderlife portrayed a relationship between an Arab and Jewish teenager. Another of Israel’s taboos is ‘mixed-race’ - ie, Arab-Jewish - relationships. The fascist Lehava group, whose ‘charity’, Hemla, is funded by the Israeli state, uses packs of its activists to hunt down and attack Arab males suspected of wanting to establish relationships with Jewish women.10

New moves

In 2013 Israel built a border fence with Egypt and Netanyahu’s government embarked on a series of measures whose purpose was to make life more difficult for asylum-seekers in Israel. It also began secretly pressuring Eritreans and Sudanese to leave for unnamed third countries.

The two countries chosen for deportation were Rwanda and Uganda. Netanyahu reached a corrupt and criminal deal with the dictator of Rwanda, Paul Ngame - although they are denying it now. Once the asylum-seekers reached these countries, they were abandoned and rendered stateless - and subject to deportation back to the country they had escaped from. Most of those who have already been forced out - up to 20,000 - live in a stateless limbo in Kampala or Kigale. Many have now been forced out of Uganda or Rwanda, making them vulnerable to blackmail and physical abuse at the hands of smugglers and security forces. Some have continued north to Sudan or Libya in an effort to reach Europe. A few have been captured and killed by Islamic State fighters or drowned in the Mediterranean.11

Many refugees have settled in the south of Tel Aviv, where they have been subject to pogroms and violent demonstrations by racist Israelis. They are accused of having illegally entered Israel, because most asylum claims in Israel are not recognised.

It is one of the achievements of the Israeli state to have turned Jewish people - the victims of past pogroms - into pogromists themselves, all with the encouragement and support of the Israeli government. Culture minister Miri Regev has called refugees a “cancer” in Israeli society. When criticised for this, she apologised to cancer patients, for having compared them to asylum-seekers.12
Among the measures used to ‘encourage’ such asylum-seekers to leave is a 2014 law that allows Israel to confiscate - ie, steal - 20% of the income of refugees. These are part of the poorest section of Israeli society - people who have little or no access to medical or health facilities, who get no public housing or benefits.13 The confiscated money is deposited into a special bank account and theoretically the asylum-seekers will be able to access the money upon leaving the country. The Israeli bank, Mizrahi Tefahot, which won the tender to manage these accounts, informed its investors that the policy would improve its liquidity and reserve ratio, because the money will not be accessible to its owners, and the bank could use it to offset loans.14 In essence the African refugees, like Palestinian labourers, have paid taxes to the state of Israel, whilst receiving absolutely no services whatsoever.

The normal excuse for discrimination against the Palestinians is ‘security’, but even that excuse is missing here. People who are innocent of any of the things the Israeli state accuses its enemies of are still being treated as an enemy, simply because they are black and not Jewish.

When Israel’s supreme court ruled against detaining the refugees for longer than a year or forcing them out of the country, the government has simply ignored those rulings - and it has done this with the complicity of the Israeli Labor Party:

There’s a silent consensus about that on the entire spectrum of the Israeli Zionist political leadership. Even so-called centrist politicians like Tzipi Livni and Yair Lapid and Yitzhak Herzog are all respecting the status quo of essentially ignoring the ruling of the supreme court.15
Celina Shapil 92 holocaust survivor
However, large numbers of Israel’s holocaust survivors, in whose name the state has committed so many war crimes, have spoken out against all this. Many of them are also kept in abject poverty in Israel.16 If there is one lesson that everyone can draw from the holocaust, it is that, if the west had taken in the Jewish refugees from Hitler, then far fewer would have died. Today the same forces that opposed the immigration of Jewish refugees in the 1930s - the America Firsters, the Daily Mails and the far right - support Zionism and the Israeli state. But many holocaust survivors perceive the contradiction between Zionism and the lessons of the holocaust. Zionism’s desire to create a Jewish state that is as ethnically pure and Jewish as possible is no different from the desire of Hitler and the Nazis to create an ethnically pure German state. But some non-Jews are more unwanted than others. In Israel today there are thousands of non-Jewish Russians who are not being deported. The difference is that they are white.
Avi Gabbay - Israeli Labor Party leader

Israeli Labor Party

What is most shameful is the role of the Israeli Labor Party, which abroad tries to present itself as progressive. Under its new, even more rightwing leader, Avi Gabbay, it is fully behind Netanyahu. The refugees from Eritrea are ‘bogus’, the party claims - no matter that every international body and human rights agency says that Eritrea is one of the worst police states in the world.
According to Jill Hoffman of the Jerusalem Post the Zionist Union parliamentary faction of the Labor Party voted 12-11 to back the government’s plan to deport refugees after Gabbay told the members of the Knesset: “This is not an issue of right or left. We would pay a price for arguing with the public.”17 This prompted Tamar Zandberg, a member of the Knesset for the left Zionist Meretz Party, to ask:
What has become of you? Are you the Zionist Union or the expelling union? Have you gone mad? In your tactics for wooing votes, you’ve abandoned your fundamental values and ability to tell right from wrong.18
Now, of course, Tamar is wrong. The ILP never had any anti-racist values. It was first and foremost a party of Zionist colonisation. It was therefore predictable that it would come out in support of Netanyahu’s proposed deportation of black African refugees.

We should be calling out those in Britain like the Jewish Labour Movement who are helping to drive the anti-Zionism equals anti-Semitism witch-hunt in the Labour Party, but who refuse to condemn the behaviour of what the JLM describes as its “sister party” in Israel. 19 I have sent messages to both Jeremy Newmark, chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, and Rhea Wolfson, who is a member of Labour’s national executive committee, as well as the JLM itself, asking them to condemn the ILP’s support for Netanyahu. But I have been met with silence. It is the JLM who has subjected Jackie Walker, a black Jewish anti-racist and former vice-chair of Momentum, to a scurrilous political lynching.

Rhea Wolfson is politically close to the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty. She spoke at the Labour Party fringe meeting of the AWL front group, Stop the Purge, and she is on the editorial board of the AWL’s The Clarion magazine. Perhaps the AWL can persuade Wolfson to dissociate herself from the JLM’s support for the ILP and its stance on Israel’s refugees - and to do this in the most public way by resigning from the JLM. Wolfson should be congratulating those like the holocaust survivors who condemn the deportations, not keeping company with racists.

But holocaust survivors are not the only ones. On January 22, David Sheen, a Canadian-Israeli who has campaigned tirelessly in support of Israel’s refugees, wrote in Electronic Intifada that Israel was set to win its war on African refugees20 and Netanyahu would be able to deport them. Yet in the space of a week it was claimed that Netanyahu’s plans were now in ruins.21

There has been considerable embarrassment among Israel’s more liberal middle classes against what has become an international scandal. Even Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, has warned that this affair is making Israel even more of an international pariah. “It is particularly welcome that hundreds of Israeli academics have spoken out,” wrote professor Rachel Giora of Tel Aviv University in a message to me:
It’s really rare that I can feel proud of Israelis. Indeed recently there are many demonstrations and lots of published petitions against governmental policies. But today language turned into acts. Today Israeli pilots and crews announced their refusal to cooperate with the government on the deportation of African asylum-seekers to Africa. They won’t fly the refugees to their death! And they call on other airlines to join in.
Israel’s refugees can breathe a little more easily due to this refusal. And the signatures of several hundred professors and intellectuals to a letter calling on the prime minister to put a halt to the expulsion of asylum-seekers from Eritrea and Sudan are also a breath of fresh air.

B Michael, a contributor to the Ha’aretz newspaper, has compared the policy of Adolf Eichmann towards the Jews of Vienna with Israel’s policy of forcing out black African asylum-seekers.22 Eichmann’s policy of impoverishing, terrorising and stripping Jews of their rights was considered a massive success at the time in forcing the Jews out of Austria. Israel is only just learning how to accomplish the same feat. Israel’s refugee population of 60,000 has already been reduced by 10,000-15,000 through a combination of tactics, such as imprisonment in Holot, depriving them of the right to work, pogroms and racist attacks. Israel has learnt well, as B Michael said, from the Jews’ traditional enemies.

Although only a few weeks ago activists such as David Sheen were conceding defeat on deportation, according to Anshel Pfeffer, the wheels had been coming off the hastily drawn expulsion plan for months.23 One of Netanyahu’s proudest achievements had been the border fence with Egypt. He described it in 2013 as “one of the greatest engineering feats ever achieved in Israel.”
Netanyahu and the far-right Zionists have used the poverty of south Tel Aviv’s existing Jewish working class residents as a rallying point for far-right activists - including members of the outlawed Kahanist groups. It was in May 2012, after ‘culture’ minister Miri Regev had made her “cancer” speech, that a mob of one thousand Israelis ran amok, attacking any refugee they could find. With record low unemployment rates and a growing demand for foreign workers, a plan to legalise the asylum-seekers and resettle them across Israel would have been sensible, but Netanyahu and the coalition government, with the support of the ILP, preferred incitement against the “infiltrators”.
A few thousand asylum-seekers were prevailed upon to leave “voluntarily”. Dozens of planes were to be chartered - the refugees given the stark choice of leaving voluntarily with $3,500 in cash or facing indefinite detention. But news of how they were mistreated upon arrival soon filtered back - and then no-one was prepared to volunteer any more.

But the high court refused to let the government incarcerate them for more than 60 days. However, it eventually backed down and approved deportation to “third countries” of any refugee whose asylum request was not pending. The interior ministry has made it almost impossible to request asylum - and of 12,000 requests just 10 have been approved.

Wheels coming off

Only a few weeks ago it seemed all was over. But, even as the first notices were being issued to the refugees, the wheels were coming off. The Israel Prison Service, already suffering from massive overcrowding with Palestinians, had no space for the thousands of expected detainees. The refugees made it clear they would not accept the financial inducements and when the government threatened to deport them by force they ran up against legal obstacles.

No less important, the small circle of activists supporting the refugees had begun to grow rapidly. A series of petitions circulated, with the signatories committing themselves to hiding refugees in their homes if necessary. Thousands have signed the petitions and hundreds of people turned out for meetings on a rain-soaked Wednesday night in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, which were organised by a group called Standing Together (Omdim Beyachad), to oppose the deportations. Thousands of Israelis are supporting the airline workers in their stand and Zazim, a new national organisation founded by university students, is holding protests and setting up information booths across the country.
The government’s backers in the media have derided these groups as anti-Israeli and far-leftists who did not care for the poor residents of south Tel Aviv. But still the protests grew,24 with petitions signed by over 1,000 doctors and medical staff; and, perhaps most damagingly, a personal letter was sent to Netanyahu, signed by 36 holocaust survivors.25

The publicity has already caused Rwanda to announce that it will not accept refugees deported against their will. How much one can trust this is another matter.

The timing could not have been better. The survivors’ letter was the main Holocaust-related news coming out of Israel just in time for International Holocaust Remembrance Day! For once the occasion is being put to good use instead of being employed to justify Israel’s racism.

Then there is the case of Celina Shapil, who spent the winter of 1943 on the run from the Nazis - she crossed the borders of Poland, Slovakia and Hungary on foot through the snow at the age of 17.26 Now 92, she was outraged at the government’s deportation plans and decided it was time to speak out:
I too have lived through a situation where the whole world was apathetic. I know what it feels like to be alone and feel like no one cares. It’s shameful we are the ones now doing this. It should not have to come to this so there needs to be public pressure. The government must change its policy.
As for the 36 survivors, they wrote to Netanyahu:
We - who know what it means to be a refugee, to be without a home or a country that would protect and defend us from violence and suffering - cannot understand how a Jewish government can expel refugees and asylum-seekers to a journey of pain, suffering and death.27
This is why, far from being anti-Semitic, it is essential to compare Israel’s racist actions to those of the Nazis. It is only in this way that sections of Israel’s own Jewish citizens can be confronted with what Zionism means. What is sad is that it is left to those like the holocaust survivors, as young Israelis are overwhelmingly racist.28 However, there are exceptions. Ella Navot, a 24-year-old sociology student at Tel Aviv University and one of the founders of Stop the Expulsion, said:
Deportation is like a red line for many people. Until now we could just sit at home and say, ‘Oh no, this is bad.’ And for the past few years people who care and follow the issue have been outraged, but this is the last straw.29
Navot explained:
There are so many aspects to what drew me to this. I could talk about the fact that my grandmother is a holocaust survivor or about my parents, who are leftwing and have always advocated for human rights, but really what brought me to it is when I met the people themselves and started to understand the issue. They became friends and when one hears their stories one cannot ignore them.
The campaign launched last week, which called on Israelis to hide asylum-seekers if it becomes necessary, was inspired, its organisers say, by the story of Anne Frank.30 The massive response to the campaign, now called Miklat Yisrael (Israel Refuge) took its organisers, including American-born rabbi Susan Silverman of Jerusalem, who came up with the idea, by surprise.
As for the 92-year-old Celina Shapil, who continues to mourn her parents and younger brother - all murdered in Auschwitz - she feels lucky to have been able to rebuild her life. But she hopes the African asylum-seekers will find refuge in Israel too. Otherwise, she warns, “We will go down terribly in history”.
