In Brighton yesterday evening hundreds of us occupied Brighton Railway Station and greeted commuters with our message – STOP THE BOMBING, STOP THE GENOCIDE IN GAZA. I spoke as did others before we took to the streets for an impromptu demonstration.

Our numbers swelled by the end to over 500 as we marched down Queens Road before turning into Western Road and then streaming through the Churchill Square shopping centre. School kids and shoppers who were there greeted us rapturously. The only angry red-faced person was a Zionist Jeweller closing his shop!

And then it was back to the Clocktower for a final rally. Further events and a march are planned in Brighton.

Palestinian children are being slaughtered in Gaza in order that Netanyahu can preserve his government coalition with openly neo-Nazi Itamar Ben Gvir, the former Police Minister, rejoining the coalition as Police-Security Minister.

It is incumbent on the Palestine solidarity movement to rise to the challenge. Symbolic protests are not enough when war crimes are being perpetrated by our leaders.. If laws need to be broken to prevent genocide then that is justified whatever our judges and rulers may think. That was the lesson of Nuremberg. The law against Genocide and the Genocide Convention is the Supreme Law of our times. All other laws are secondary.

This time the world must make it clear to Netanyahu and his Western enablers – Trump, Starmer, Lammy et al. that there is a price to pay for supporting genocide. The timidity of PSC and Stop the War Coalition nationally must end.

We must rally at the BBC, which is acting as the British arm of the Voice of Israel. It carried Netanyahu’s lies about how Hamas had broken the ceasefire when everyone knows that it was Netanyahu himself who broke the ceasefire and refused to move into Phase 2 of the ceasefire for fear of bringing down his coalition.

Instead of allowing Hamas equal time the BBC then switched to another Zionist, this time from Chatham House, the British Establishments International Affairs think tank.

We should say out aloud that it isn’t Hamas but Netanyahu and his western enablers who are the terrorists. Those who deliberately murder children and their families are the ISIS terrorists of our time. It is no accident that the ISIS-Al Qaeda HTS, which is formally proscribed by Britain, has been given a free pass by the British and European governments with favourable interviews with Blair’s eminent grise Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart.

Not only that but Establishment figures like former head of MI6, Sir John Sawers, have openly praised HTS calling them ‘a liberation movement, not of a terrorist organisation.’ Sawyers said:

This is a clear breach of s.12 of the Terrorism Act 2000 under which I and others like Sarah Wilkinson and Richard Medhurst are being prosecuted. The situation today in Britain is that if you speak out in support of a proscribed organisation slaughtering Christians and Alawites and others in Syria that is fine. But if you support the Palestinian resistance against genocide, including the elected Hamas government in Gaza, then you are prosecuted.

In my view Netanyahu’s attack on Gaza is a sign of political weakness not strength. We have it in our power to force an end to the Genocide and an end to the arms shipments which enable the genocide. Of course the German government, which is Israel’s second major arms supplier, will be reluctant to cut off the arms supply since Genocide in Gaza makes the German state feel more comfortable about all the other genocides, including the Holocaust, that they have perpetrated.

Today there can be no excuse for timidity. The Zionists may seem to be strong however they have lost all moral legitimacy. As I said yesterday when speaking, although it may not appear to be the case, Zionism is approaching its end game. The narrative of Jews fighting for a homeland in Israel no longer washes. Israel is seen as Western imperialism’s attack dog. Its main supporters are the very anti-Semites that Zionism claimed it needed a state to get away from.

In recent days the far-Right Chief Rabbi of Britain, Ephraim Mirvis, has been embarrassed into withdrawing from a conference on anti-Semitism organised by Israel’s fascist Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli. Chikli, being a good Zionist, decided that given he is holding a conference on anti-Semitism who better to invite than anti-Semites!

In the fight against ‘anti-Semitism’ (for which read anti-Zionism) the Israeli government and Zionist movement decided to invite genuine anti-Semites. None of us should be surprised. When Hitler came to power, the only political movement to welcome the rise of the Nazis was the Zionist movement.

People forget that 90 years ago people like Berl Katznelson, a founder of Mapai (Israeli Labor Party) and editor of their paper Davar and deput to David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first Prime Minister’s, spoke of the rise of Hitler as ‘an opportunity to build and flourish like none we have ever had or ever will have.

Others like the national Zionist poet Hayim Nahman Bialik argued that ‘Hitlerism has perhaps saved German Jewry, which was being assimilated into annihilation.’

When Lammy said Israel had broken international human rights law by its blockade of Gaza for 15 days, Starmer’s spokesman contradicted him by saying that Israel ‘was at risk’ of breaking the law but in any case the government cannot form an opinion as that is the job of the courts.

But when it comes to the Palestinians Starmer has reiterated his former view that preventing the entry of food, fuel, medicines etc. is perfectly alright. Starmer is beyond despicable. A corrupt Zionist who was top of the list when it cames to freebies. Even his wife’s knickers were donated! Starmer has unflinchingly backed up Trump on Israel.

The Palestine solidarity movement in Britain must redouble its efforts to stop Starmer, Lammy and all the other war criminals.

It has been a wonderful and quite unique week for Brighton PSC and activists.  On Tuesday we met the yacht Freedom as it sailed passed Brighton Marina and then on to Shoreham harbour where it docked.  Groups of us rushed from the Marina in a convoy of cars to the Kingston beach in Shoreham to see what seemed a tiny little yacht, which was nonetheless too big to dock at the  Marina.

On the following two days we had stalls in the centre of town with members of the Crewe.  On Wednesday night we had a jam packed meeting at the Friends Meeting House in Ship Street.  Arriving late I had to go into public gallery upstairs as all the seats had been taken downstairs.  Some 130 people crammed in to pay tribute to an international crew for the boat which had come from Bergen in Norway and Gottenberg in Sweden.

Perhaps one question above all summed up what people felt.  ‘Aren’t you afraid’ asked someone in the audience.  Here they were, human rights volunteers soon to be pitted against the might of the world’s armed bully par excellence.  A state armed to the teeth and proclaiming its ‘right to self defence’.  The West’s racist Rottweiler, its teeth permanently bared.

For 11 long years a hermetic siege has been maintained for the crime of having elected the wrong government in Gaza.  Hamas, a conservative Islamic group has been demonised as genocidal killers, ironically enough by genocidal killers who make Hamas seem like a Sunday school picnic.

The question summed up our fears that these brave men and women would experience rough treatment at the hands of a military that does not hesitate to murder in cold blood children and medics, as they fulfil the rulings of rabbis who say that Palestinians, however young or old, are a legitimate target.

At the meeting a variety of solidarity messages were read out including from local MPs Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown and Keith Taylor, the Green MEP for the South-East who posted a video message.  There was only one MP missing and that was the racist Progress ‘Labour’ MP for Hove, Peter Kyle.

On Thursday we had a wonderful social with food and drink at the Verdict jazz club opposite the law courts.  Thanks to Roxanne and all who helped make it such a success. It was also good to see Lloyd drop in. 

On Friday at 8.00 a.m. about 60 of us gathered to bid farewell to the crewe as they left Shoreham for the last time for Spain.  At the end of July, in company with 3 other boats, Freedom will attempt to break the blockade of Gaza.  It is ironic that Israel attacks BDS for being hateful and of course ‘anti-Semitic’ but their enforced blockade is perfectly ok, even if they kill human rights volunteers as happened with the Marvi Marmara some years ago.

Below are some photos of the range of activities that took place in Brighton, a city on the South coast of England this weekend in support of the Palestinians.

Our focus was on Israel’s wanton murder of unarmed demonstators in Gaza using the same feeble excuses of ‘self-defence’.  

It is to be noticed that according to a report in today’s Ha’aretz Israeli Settlers Attack Soldiers Arriving to Evacuate West Bank Outpost Israeli  soldiers used tear gas and fired in the air to disperse a group of stone throwing violent settlers.  They didn’t fire directly at them.  Of course the reason why is that the settlers were Jewish.

Among our activities was marching from the Clocktower in British where we held the Gaza demonstration and where we have a stall each Saturday to HSBC which is financing arms sales to Israel.  We then went to the Palace Pier, which was crowded with tourists and hung a massive banner from the side of it!

Like South Africa before it, Israel has no sense of its own absurdity.  The suggestion that Israel's military is in danger from a 16 year old Palestinian girl who dared to slap a heavily armed Israeli soldier who, moments before, had shot her cousin in the head, almost killing him, is something only a state that is paranoid beyond measure could believe.  Even more amazing is that Israel believes everybody else is as stupid as it is.  Yet Israel is not alone.  

All settler colonial states demonise their opponents and transform them into superhuman devils.  South Africa did exactly the same.  A siege mentality is common to all settler communities.  Israel really is no exception.

There has been massive reaction world wide to the gaoling of Ahed and Israel’s threats of rape, sexual abuse as well as indefinite imprisonment of a young girl.  Like South Africa before it and indeed Nazi Germany from which it claims its origins, the Israeli state is incapable of looking in the mirror because it is afraid of what it will see.

The racism of what has happened cries out.  A Jewish child would never see the inside of an Israeli gaol for such a minor misdemeanour.  As the Ha’aretz article below shows, an adult settler thug of a woman walked free of all legal consequences after giving an Israeli soldier a slap. Why? Because she is Jewish and Ahed isn’t.

Both Ahed Tamimi and Yifat Alkobi were questioned for slapping a soldier in the West Bank, but little else about their cases are similar — simply because one is Jewish, the other Palestinian

This slap didn’t lead the nightly news. This slap, which landed on the cheek of a Nahal soldier in Hebron, did not lead to an indictment. The assailant, who slapped a soldier who was trying to stop her from throwing stones, was taken in for questioning but released on bail the same day and allowed to return home.

Prior to this incident, she had been convicted five times — for throwing rocks, for assaulting a police officer and for disorderly conduct, but was not jailed even once.

In one instance, she was sentenced to probation, and in the rest to a month of community service and practically a token fine, as compensation to the injured parties. The accused systematically failed to heed summonses for questioning or for legal proceedings, but soldiers did not come to drag her out of bed in the middle of the night, nor were any of her relatives arrested. Aside from a brief report by Chaim Levinson about the incident, on July 2, 2010, there were hardly any repercussions to the slap and scratches inflicted by Yifat Alkobi on the face of a soldier who caught her hurling rocks at Palestinians.

The Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson’s Unit said at the time that the army “takes a grave view of any incidence of violence toward security forces,” and yet the assailant goes on living peacefully at home. The education minister didn’t demand that she sit in prison, social media have not exploded with calls for her to be raped or murdered, and columnist Ben Caspit didn’t recommend that she punished to the full extent of the law “in a dark place, without cameras.”

Like Ahed Tamimi, Alkobi has been known for years to the military and police forces that surround her place of residence, and both are considered a nuisance and even a danger. The main difference between them is that Tamimi assaulted a soldier who was sent by a hostile government that does not recognize her existence, steals her land and kills and wounds her relatives, while Alkobi, a serial criminal, assaulted a soldier from her own people and her religion, who was sent by her nation to protect her, a nation in which she is a citizen with special privileges.

Jewish violence against soldiers in the territories has been a matter of routine for years. But even when it seems like there’s no point asking that soldiers in the territories protect Palestinians from physical harassment and vandalism of their property by settlers, it’s hard to understand why the authorities continue to turn a blind eye, to cover up and close cases or not even open them, when the violators are Jews. There is plenty of evidence, some of it recorded on camera. And yet the offenders still sleep at home in their beds, emboldened by divine command and amply funded by organizations that receive state support.

In the winter it’s nice to get warm and cozy under these double standards, but there’s one question that every Israeli should be asking himself: Tamimi and Alkobi committed the same offense. The punishment (or lack thereof) should be the same. If the choice is between freeing Tamimi or jailing Alkobi, which would you choose? Tamimi is to remain in custody for the duration of the proceedings — trial in a hostile military court — and is expected to receive a prison sentence. Alkobi, who was not prosecuted for this offense, and was tried in a civilian court for much more serious offenses, lived at home for the duration of the proceedings. She was represented by a lawyer who did not have to wait at a checkpoint in order to serve his client and her only punishment was community service.

The Likud and Habayit Hayehudi cabinet ministers have no reason to rush to pass a law that would apply Israeli law in the territories. Even without it, the only thing that matters is if you were born Jewish. Everything else is irrelevant.
