It is a supreme irony that Israel today is perpetrating a genocide against the Palestinians, a combination of ethnic cleansing and extermination, just as the Nazis did.

Of course the methods are different but you don’t need a gas chamber to perpetrate genocide, although as you will see, prominent Israelis have even suggested that.

A question that Western propagandists rarely ask is ‘How is the Israeli state, in its attitude to the Palestinians, different from Nazi Germany’s view of Jews’?

It was only in September 1940 that Nazi Germany postponed the Madagascar Project, which was finally abandoned in 1942. Up till then its policy had been ethnic cleansing although it had also engaged in extermination.

October 7 wasn’t the cause of the prevalence of Nazi ideology in Israel. It was the catalyst. In 2007 Yediot Aharanot, Israel’s largest circulation newspaper, published an opinion poll which found that amongst Israel’s Jewish population:

   Ø   75 % don’t approve of shared apartment buildings

Ø   Over 50% believe that the marriage of a Jewish woman to an Arab man is equal to national treason

Ø   over 75 % did not approve of apartment buildings being shared between Arabs and Jews.

Ø   60 % said they would not allow an Arab to visit their home

Ø   40 % agreed that “Arabs should have their right to vote for Knesset revoked”.

Ø   Over half agreed that Israel should encourage its Arab citizens to leave the country.

Ø   55 % said “Arabs and Jews should be separated at entertainment sites”

Ø   Over 56% said they believed that Israel’s Arab citizens posed both a security and a demographic threat to the country.

Ø   Over 37% believed that “Arab culture is inferior.”

The 2016 Pew Report, Israel’s Religiously Divided Society found that 79% of Israeli Jews believed that Jews should be given preferential treatment. It also found that 48% supported expelling Arabs compared to 46% who opposed this.

Torture is the official policy of the Israeli state. Immediately after the attack on Gaza began, Israel  barred Red Cross visits to Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli gaols and military detention facilities.

The justification for this was that Israeli hostages had not been granted ICRC visits. However, the ban remained in place even after all hostages were returned. The High Court ruled in June that the Red Cross must be allowed to visit but the Prison Service has defied this ruling with a new policy that allows only 4 visits per year to a maximum of 5 prisoners for 30 minutes and other restrictions that ensure it can’t talk to those tortured.

A series of reports issued by the Public Defender’s Office, found that Palestinian security detainees held in Israeli prisons suffer from severe and systematic violence from prison guards, deprivation of food, medical neglect, and unsanitary conditions that caused the outbreak of disease in the prisons.

In a debate in the Knesset on a bill to reverse the High Court ruling, proponents openly admitted that allowing the Red Cross in would be a PR disaster for Israel since it would prove that torture was prevalent in Israeli prisons.

Galit-Distel Atbaryan of Likud was quite clear, in a debate on 29 June, when she supported a bill to reverse the High Court ruling. If Red Cross visits were allowed then ‘blood libels’ (a term used for anything which is true) would spread around the world. She said that there was ‘genuine hysteria in the Israeli Prison Service’ at what the visits may reveal.

Last Thursday NAZA, a film directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, was awarded the prestigious Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

Shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, NAZA reveals the systems behind Israel’s mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. It relied on the anonymous testimony of former Israeli officers. It is harrowing yet rather than face up to its war crimes, Israeli society has gotten itself two new hate objects.

Zohar threatened to strip Abraham and Szor of their citizenship and have them investigated for collaborating with the enemy. The IDF’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, told the media that the military would use “every tool at our disposal” to respond to the film. Far-right former general and Knesset candidate Ofer Winter said to Abraham “I understand that you are afraid to return to Israel; you are right [to be].”

Israel’s right-wing media has done its best to create an atmosphere of fear. On Monday night, a host on the far-right Channel 14 TV said that Israelis should “hunt them, chase after them, don’t give them a moment’s peace, if they dare set their filthy foot in Israel.”

The channel later posted a video of a graffiti artist painting an image that shows Abraham and Szor as prisoners, with crosshairs near their heads and the word “traitors” (boged) stamped across their faces. (The term “boged” was often deployed against Yitzhak Rabin in the months before his assassination.

In any sane society, such calls would be the subject of a police investigation and arrest on charges of incitement to violence. If a Palestinian was to make such calls for violence against Netanyahu then he would be arrested. But this is Israel and calls for killing leftist enemies are par for the course today.

On Israeli social media, people are circulating an AI-generated video of Abraham and Szor with their necks in nooses. The Hilltop Youth WhatsApp network Hadashot HaGvaot put out a message calling for the death penalty for the two journalists.

“Most of the criticism is incitement, and it’s scary,” Oren Persico, a reporter at The Seventh Eye, an independent media outlet in Israel, said on Tuesday.

Jewish journalists in Israel who have criticized Netanyahu, or who have written about the abuse of Palestinian prisoners at Sde Teiman detention camp, have come in for increasing harassment in recent years.

The title of this article says that Israel is to the 21^st century what Nazi Germany was to the 20^th century. However this doesn’t mean that Israel is the same as Nazi Germany. In many ways it is worse than fascism.

Fascist states, such as Nazi Germany, attacked their own citizens, in particular the working class and minorities. An estimated 30,000 non-Jewish German citizens were executed and another 20,000 soldiers by German military tribunals.

Israel is a settler colonial state. It doesn’t persecute the Jewish working class. Settler colonialism involves a class alliance between its ruling class and the settler working class. The enemy is the indigenous population of all classes.

Israel is a messianic ethno-religious settler colonial state. There is a limited form of democracy for its Jewish citizens, although those on the left are facing increasing repression. The judicial system is relatively liberal for Israeli Jewish citizens, hence the mass protests against the judicial reforms before October 7, but it is overtly racist against Israeli Palestinians and even worse in regard to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. Not once has the Supreme Court challenged the use of administrative detention against Palestinians.

Gaza doctors are reporting that IOF snipers have reached a level of depravity, cruelty and impunity never before seen. Tadhg Hickey says Gaza’s doctors are telling him that…

“they are seeing a pattern in the sniper wounds of the kids coming in… one night, a lot of the kids coming in will have gunshot wounds to the head, another night it’ll be the neck, and another night it’ll be the arms or the torso.”

Hickey recalls when Norman Finkelstein described the Holocaust as a horrific clinical scientific plan. It wasn't meant to be pleasurable and Nazi Soldiers were even tried and prosecuted for sadism… “you weren’t supposed to take any glee or any pleasure in the horror that you were meeting out.” By comparison, Hickey explains… “Zionist take pleasure… it’s that level of horror and extermination but it’s got a gleefulness to it, it’s got a pride in the crime…”

When Ed Miliband began his speech in Parliament on September 8 saying that trade with the settlements would be illegal he took care not to be seen as calling for the end to the Israeli state. Quite the contrary he said he spoke:

as a proud British Jew, someone with the deepest gratitude to the State of Israel for giving a home to my grandmother after she lost her husband, my grandfather, and 60 other family members at the hands of the Nazis.

He went on to reminisce about how ‘some of my most joyful childhood memories were picking oranges as a kid on the kibbutz where my cousins lived.’ Perhaps he didn’t know that the kibbutzim were erected on razed Arab villages whose inhabitants had been expelled at the point of a gun. Miliband went on to say:

my personal story and that of thousands of British Jews is one of the many reasons why I say to anyone here or around the world who questions Israel’s right to exist as a homeland for the Jewish people: you are wrong and we will call you out whenever you engage in this attempt at the erasure of Israel.... 

No doubt this was an innocent mistake - no one in the Israeli government remembered that Israeli Arabs might shelters - and then they say Israel is not an apartheid state

The Kibbutz where Miliband's aunt and cousins lived was Kibbutz Nahshonim, which was established in 1949 on the lands of the Palestinian village of Majdal Yaba.  In 1948 the original inhabitants had been driven out at the point of a gun.

Miliband's home is in England not Israel. Israel is not a Jewish homeland but a settler colonial state where millions of Jews live at the expense of the Palestinians whose homes they have taken. Miliband also stated that:

October 7 makes plain the grave threats that Israel faces. And it has every right to defend itself. We should not only condemn those threats but act against those who carry them out.

Once again the trope that Israel has the 'right to self-defence' against Palestinians who lands and homes Israeli colonists have stolen. Presumably the Nazi invaders of France and Poland also had 'the right to self-defence'. Of course invaders have no such right. That belongs exclusively to those fighting for their freedom.

There wasn't a mention of the 16 year siege before October 7 which was imposed because Hamas had won the elections in 2006. Nothing about the strangling of the economy, the murder of thousands of Palestinians and the restriction on everything going in or out.

This is the context of Miliband’s speech. Not a word about the death penalty for Palestinians only. Nothing about the torture and abuse of prisoners, imprisonment without trial (administrative detention) of Palestinians (including children).  Nor was there anything about Israel’s apartheid.

Although he made passing reference to ‘increasing evidence that war crimes appear to have been committed’ Miliband refused to mention the word ‘genocide’ He spoke about welcoming ‘another wave of students from Gaza coming to study in Britain’ but said nothing about those students being able to bring their children and partners with them.

Miliband's speech was an improvement from the support of Starmer for genocide, but that is a very low bar. Miliband and Labour still refuse to accept that a Jewish settler colonial state is inherently racist, a throwback to medieval days when state and religion went hand in hand.

One of the main features of the Nazi era was the complicity of doctors in the ‘Euthanasia’ programme and the extermination of those in the death camps. Joseph Mengele and the SS doctors  in particular.

The medical profession in Germany was the most Nazified of all professions. By 1936 about 45% of non-Jewish German doctors were members of the Nazi party. By 1942, this figure had risen to more than 50%.

Who would have thought that Israeli doctors would compete for infamy with their Nazi predecessors? That Israel, would produce a generation of Jewish Dr Mengeles?

At the 1946-7 Doctors Trial in Nuremberg out of 20 Nazi doctors and 3 SS physicians on trial accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity and membership of the SS, 7 were sentenced to death and hanged, 7 were acquitted and the rest given prison sentences.

Israeli doctors and the Israeli Medical Association [IMA] have become participants in the genocide, destruction of Gaza’s health sector and the torture of Palestinian prisoners.

H was a doctor at Nasser hospital which was raided in March 2024. He was badly beaten and then taken to the torture camp of Sde Teiman where he spent 69 days.

After 43 days he was transferred to a prison near Tel Aviv. A doctor affirmed that H. needed surgery as a result of the beatings and that he should not be interrogated. Nonetheless he was sent back to Sde Teiman without treatment.

After another 3 weeks H was transferred to a prison in Ashkelon where he was seen by a doctor, who made him keep his blindfold on during the examination. “We are colleagues in the same profession,” H. said. “You are supposed to treat me humanely.” In response the Israeli doctor “slapped me while I was still blindfolded.” “You are a terrorist,” he said.

By way of contrast, in 1989 South African physicians William John Kalk and Yosuf Veriava treated 20 political prisoners in hospital in Johannesburg after a hunger strike. When the authorities asked them to send their patients back to detention, they refused, fearing that the men might be tortured.

Known in the literature of medical ethics as “Kalk’s refusal,” their action has since served as a moral roadmap for doctors. In 1999 it was cited in the Istanbul Protocol, the most important UN guideline for medical professionals who are documenting cases of torture and ill-treatment. It instructs doctors to refrain from returning a detainee to the place of detention if an examination supports allegations of abuse.

The overwhelming majority of Israeli doctors, including every Israeli hospital and the IMA, refused to condemn the destruction of Gaza’s health care system. Some praised it.

Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem refused to admit an injured Palestinian man whom the military had brought to the emergency room for serious gunshot wounds. Sources told Haaretz that treating him would “hurt national feelings.”

At Soroka Hospital, in Be’er Sheva, in the ten months following October 7, hospital staff called the police on at least three undocumented Palestinian women when they reached the emergency room. Spokesmen for the hospital stressed that this was a policy devised “in coordination with the police”.

In May 2025, Amos Sabo, a senior surgeon at Maccabi Healthcare Services, posted on X that he considered his reserve service a way of advancing public health by “eliminating cockroaches and other loathsome insects.” A few months earlier he wrote: “Gaza should be erased. There are no uninvolved people there.”

In November 2023, about 90 Israeli doctors published an open letter calling on the military to bomb Palestinian hospitals even though 14 out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals had already stopped functioning because of Israel’s attacks.

International humanitarian law stipulates that medical facilities “must be protected at all times and shall not be the object of an attack.” However Israel’s doctors wrote that:

the residents of Gaza saw fit to turn hospitals into terrorist nests to take advantage of western morality... (they) brought destruction upon themselves.… Abandoning Israeli citizens while granting protection to mass murderers simply because they are hiding in hospitals is unthinkable.

One of the signatories, American-born gynaecologist Chana Katan, explained:

I will do everything I can to defend and protect IDF soldiers and ensure they return safely to their homes. It is the IDF’s duty to bomb the terrorists hiding in hospitals in Gaza.

The IMA, which represents 95% of Israeli physicians, would also sign on to a statement that justified the Israeli army’s assaults on Palestinian hospitals.

In mid-November 2023 the IDF laid siege to al-Shifa Hospital, shelled its surroundings, cut off its supply of water and electricity and sent ground troops into the compound, which housed 7,000 displaced people, 1,500 healthcare staff, and 700 patients, including premature infants. The Israeli military asserted that “Hamas’s headquarters” were located in tunnels directly under the hospital - an accusation for which Israel failed to provide substantiating evidence.

On November 8, 2023, officials with the WHO and UNRWA denounced the siege for its “disastrous” effect on medical conditions. On November 23 the ethics committees of six Israeli health associations - including the IMA - sent a letter to the WHO to castigate it for its “silence” about Hamas’s alleged control of al-Shifa.

Parroting the government’s rhetoric, the heads of the ethics committees explained that

once terrorists or militants see that no objections are raised when hospitals are used for combat, they will feel free to do so on other occasions and in other locations as well.

Israel has never provided any proof that Hamas used hospitals as bases. In a crude attempt to provide proof the IDF planted a bag of weapons next to an NMR machine with a powerful magnet! Members of these associations’ ethics committees have remained largely silent as health care staff in Israel violate ethical principles. What began as an institutional policy of refusing to admit detained Palestinians in October 2023 soon turned into a practice of individual refusals by practitioners.

Upon the arrival of a 15-year-old detainee to a hospital in Israel’s Center District, one nurse refused to provide medical treatment, while another forcibly removed his intravenous drip and demanded his immediate transfer from the hospital. A nurse at Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot refused to treat a detainee as recently as February 2025.

When detainees are admitted, their hands and legs are shackled to the bed. One doctor confided that coworkers

“withheld painkillers after invasive procedures, and then explained to colleagues that pain medication is a privilege that Palestinian detainees do not deserve.” 

After months of complaints by Physicians for Human Rights, the IMA’s ethics committee, in February 2025 at last issued a letter condemning “the restraint of prisoners and detainees in hospitals across the country.”

On July 6, 2024, a detainee was transferred from Sde Teiman to Assuta Hospital in Ashdod after suffering critical injuries to his neck, chest, and abdomen, as well as a ruptured rectum. The medical examination indicated that he had been subjected to torture and sexual violence. Immediately after the treatment he was sent back to his torturers.

According to Human Rights Watch, detainees at Sde Teiman could hear the screams of other inmates being tortured; doctors at the field hospital - where patients routinely arrived with injuries indicative of severe violence - would also have heard them too. Doctors there were prohibited by the military from using their names or license numbers when examining prisoners or signing medical reports. This is in order to shield them from scrutiny over their complicity in abuses.

In April 2024 Haaretz reported that an Israeli physician, Yoel Donchin, had sent a letter to the Israeli Government and the Attorney General detailing the harsh conditions at the facility and the tacit assent expected from the medical staff.

“Just this week two patients had their legs amputated due to injuries from being cuffed. Sadly, this has become routine.” 

The doctor described how patients were fed through straws, made to use diapers for defecation, and kept handcuffed and blindfolded at all times.

We have all become partners in violating Israeli law. As a physician, I am even more troubled by the violation of my fundamental commitment to provide equal care to all patients. 

In April, Yossef Walfisch, the new chair of the IMA’s ethics committee, responded in an official statement.

Israeli physicians, are required to adhere by international conventions, medical ethics principles, and the Geneva Declaration. (They) must provide all necessary medical care, whether in hospitals, prisons, or military facilities, and should be guided exclusively by medical considerations.

But these were mere words. In a letter in The Lancet, Walfisch doubled down on IDF propaganda that Gaza’s hospitals had been Hamas bases. In his statements Walfisch attempted to deny the evidence of Palestinians’ horrific treatment. He repeatedly referred to Palestinian patients as “Hamas terrorists.”

Arguing that medical staff’s “safety takes precedence over any other ethical consideration,” Walfisch failed to say a single word about the beatings, torture and medical neglect at Sde Teiman. He revealed that, when he visited the base’s medical team, he found staffers who “work day and night to provide the most suitable treatment within the limitations of this type of facility.” He called the medical personnel at Sde Teiman “among the most moral doctors I have met.”

The IMA could have criticized Israeli doctors who posted genocidal messages on social media, investigated health professionals who facilitated torture and defended Palestinian doctors like Abed Samara. Instead it not only turned a blind eye to these abuses but adopted Israel’s line of blaming Hamas for Israeli crimes in Gaza, specifically the destruction of the Strip’s medical system, the killing of more than 1,400 health care workers, and the detention of nearly 400 others.

Not a single prominent medical official spoke up after reports emerged that in the early hours of March 23, 2025 the IDF had ambushed and massacred 15 Palestinian paramedics and aid workers in Gaza then tried to cover up the crime by burying the bodies in a mass grave alongside their smashed ambulances and fire truck; nor when it was revealed that a military spokesperson had lied about the atrocity, claiming that the ambulances’ emergency lights were off and accusing the paramedics of having “advanced suspiciously.”

This is Zionism in the 21^st century. It surpasses even the Nazis in its cruelty. It is ironic that when the Russians liberated Berlin on 24 April 1945 they found 800 Jewish patients in the Jewish Hospital who had survived.
