Brighton & Hove supporters of a free Palestine and members of the Ceasefire Coalition are raising money for Medical Aid for Palestinians and for the creation of a new Medical Centre in Askar Refugee Camp, Nablus, to support Palestinian healthcare under siege and occupation.

I will once again be walking from Brighton to Lewes over the spectacular Downs to the house of Tom Paine - the great English-American revolutionary, author of The Rights of Man, and a fighter for freedom of the oppressed everywhere.

This is a historic and beautiful ramble, taking us from Brighton across the South Downs to Lewes - a town famous for its dissenting tradition. This year, the walk will end at Southover Grange Gardens, where a short talk on Tom Paine’s life and his relevance to the Palestinian struggle today will take place. Afterwards we will go up Southover High Street to Bull House, Tom Paine’s former home and then to a local pub for refreshments.

 The Walk

Date:                   Sunday, 17 August 2025

Time:                  Meet at 11am

Meeting point: East Brighton Park, at the junction of Wilson Avenue and Roedean Road.

People will cut across the park into the Downs, follow the trail to Woodingdean, and stop for lunch at the crossroads pub. Some participants may finish here, or join here. We’ll set off again around 1:30pm, cutting diagonally across the Downs towards Lewes. Once in Lewes, we’ll make our way to Tom Paine’s old abode/workplace on the High Street for a short concluding talk. The walk is family friendly and dogs are welcome to join as well. Distance: about 10 miles

Route: East Brighton → Ovingdean → Woodingdean → Lewes

Why we walk

This sponsored walk is not just a journey through the countryside - it is an act of solidarity and a way to bring tangible support to those living under the horrific conditions created by Israeli blockade, occupation, apartheid, and genocide.

Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank are enduring unimaginable suffering - healthcare is under constant attack, and the situation grows more desperate by the day.

MAP remains one of the few international charities operating on the ground in Gaza, and the Medical Centre in Askar Camp in Nablus will provide essential care to refugees in the West Bank. By walking and donating, we send a powerful message of compassion and resistance to injustice.

Last year, thanks to incredible support, we raised over £12,000 for Medical Aid for Palestinians. You can see the 2024 walk here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/brightonwalkforgaza

Everyone is welcome to join us for the walk.

Askar Refugee Camp, Nablus

There is no limit to the number of participants - the more, the better, as we aim to raise as much money as possible for these vital causes.

If you’d like to take part, please ask your family, friends, and colleagues to sponsor you by donating here - or make a donation yourself.

You can also collect cash donations to be transferred directly to our fundraising account (email below for details).

Since we’re splitting the funds between two charities, all donations will go into the Stop the War bank account, and then we’ll distribute the money equally between MAP and the Medical Centre in Askar Refugee Camp.
