A Day in the Life of Tarneem

Life at War - Part 1: Learning to live with a constant fear of death

I first met Tarneem at a Boycott Israel Network Weekend School about 2 years ago. She was a student at an old established university in England and active in Palestine solidarity work.

A few weeks she contacted me from Gaza where she had returned to a very different life. Gaza was at war and she wanted me to help in raising funds for her sick mother who needed to get to Egypt if there was any chance of her living.

In England she was a student of English and I asked her to write the article below so that people can understand the life that she, her family and thousands like her are living as Israel tries to pursue its ethnic cleansing and genocidal project.

This is her story. It is a story of a living hell that the war criminals who rule in the West – Genocide Joe Biden, David Cameron, Anthony Blinken and Rishi Sunak – are fuelling with supplies of more weapons to kill more civilians.

We learn today that Netanyahu is afraid that the International Criminal Court will issue a warrant for him and the other Judeo-Nazi War Leaders in Israel.

Biden we hear is doing his level best to put pressure on the Court’s Prosecutor Karim A. A. Khan KC not to issue any because Israel doesn’t recognise the ICC. Strangely enough Biden welcomed the ICC issuing warrants against Vladimir Putin even though Russia also doesn’t recognise the court.

The hypocrisy is breathtaking and demonstrates the collapse of any pretence that international law has any meaning. Karim himself was happy to issue warrants against Putin at a moment’s notice but has done his best to delay having to take any action against Netanyahu despite the fact that children have been deliberately targeted by Israel in this war. 500 children have died in two years of war in Ukraine, 30 times that number in 6 months in Gaza. The hypocrisy of our leaders is there for all to see but their only apparent concern is for Israel’s hostages, never Palestinian hostages.

The photographs below were taken by Tarneem and depict her environment.

Enough of my observations, let Tarneem tell her story.

Tony Greenstein

Bombing has become a regular part of my life.

I was raised in Gaza. This is the place of my childhood and youth. Every corner of this city has some emotional value for me and is associated with countless memories. I returned to Gaza from the United Kingdom after earning my master’s at Durham university, in early March to see my family, and help my people. With the beginning of this war, I am trapped in this living hell. Bombing and air raids had now become a part of my daily life. I would like to say that I am used to the constant sound of bombing and the feeling of the walls shaking, but I am not. For over six months, my family and hundreds of thousands of Gazan families live in constant fear of death. Our days consists of trying to stay alive and trying to find a way out. There are explosions and aircraft flying overhead every day. The bombings are everywhere and are getting closer than ever and sound bombs are the worst. We can think of nothing else, and we can feel nothing else. The days of the week stopped to have any meaning, I can’t tell whether it is Friday or Saturday, it is all just one long nightmare. My sister tries to keep count of the days, but for me it is all a blur.

One night, we all woke up terrified “I can't take this anymore. I can't even sleep anymore without jumping at every little noise." I told my family. My brother, Ali, replied "I feel like I'm constantly on edge. It's destroying my well-being." The bombardments were very close to the house. They usually increase in intensity once the sun goes down: it's psychological warfare, at night everything is more terrifying for us.

How could I describe my home becoming a place of fear and terror? How could I take more hours and long nights of relentless bombings, explosions, and tank shelling? I was worried for my sister – she was so stressed because of the bombings that I thought her heart would stop. Her fitness watch showed 180 heartbeats per minute, and I was so worried to see her like this.I told her it would be stupid if she were to die from fear in the midst of all this! “Look! Who’s talking?”, my sister said. Then my siblings followed up with a conversation about how I turn off all our flashlights and remove batteries every time I hear a bombing.

Sister: "Did you hear that? I think it's another bombing raid."

Brother: "Yeah, I heard it. But seriously, does Tarneem really think turning off the lights will make us invisible to the war planes?"

Sister: "Apparently so! She acts like we're playing hide and seek with bombers."

Brother: "I swear, if we turned off the lights every time we heard a bomb, we'd be sitting in the dark all night.Let's just hope Tarneem doesn't ask us to start whispering next."

Sister: "Oh, don't give her any ideas!"

We laughed, knowing deep inside that this is a mental trauma that might last forever but anything to lighten the mood in this chaos was welcomed. There is no time to deal with our PTSD, it’s never post for us, always chronic.

Not knowing how long it will last makes this nightmare even worse. I will ask for some help later as it is impossible to do it now and, to be honest, I do not have time for it at the moment. I, now, spend my time caring for my mother, she is going through a lot more, but we support each other as much as we can. My beloved mother, 66 years old, needs urgent medical treatment. She requires two CT scans yearly for her upper thigh to monitor her condition, but she hasn't been able to receive any since October 2023. Unfortunately, even if the war in Gaza were to end, the necessary medical facilities and procedures would still be lacking. To make matters worse, there is no PET scan available in Gaza either. Her condition has been worsening, and she has been experiencing excruciating pain in her leg. We have managed to obtain some painkillers and vitamins, but the lack of nutritious food and essential medicines in Gaza is putting her health at serious risk. I am extremely worried about her, and I need to get her out of here.

Another day filled with the relentless sounds of bombing and airstrikes. I lay still in bed, my niece Mary sleeping beside me. With my seasonal allergy, I couldn't help but sneeze. Little did I know, this sneeze would evoke a heart-wrenching reaction from Mary.

Instantly, Mary's hands shot to her ears, her eyes tightly shut in a futile attempt to block out the cacophony of noise. Panic surged within me as I feared I had disturbed her sleep, but her mother's calm voice reassured me otherwise. "Mary thinks your sneeze was bombing," she explained softly, her gaze filled with a mixture of sadness and resignation. "She does that every time there is bombing while she is sleeping."

The trauma inflicted by the constant barrage of explosions weighed heavily on us all, even seeping into our sleep. And for Mary, so young and innocent, the horrors of war were incomprehensible, yet painfully palpable in her instinctive reaction to the slightest disturbance.

As I lay here in the darkness, listening to the distant rumble of explosions, I can only hope and pray for a future where peace reigns and the sounds of war are nothing but a distant memory.Nevertheless, I find relief writing about my experience. The greatest source of support in these times is the messages of love and hope that I receive from people who know me and knows the reality about Gaza. Just realising that there are people who reject all the atrocities happening in Gaza makes me hopeful that things will get better one day. There is nothing more terrifying than seeing your loved ones suffering and your hometown being destroyed.

Facing the chaos of trying to come terms with a new life

Every morning in Gaza begins with uncertainty. Our so basic and so earthly human desires are our suffering and today is no different. With each passing moment, I am reminded of the harsh reality of life in a war-torn city. My mind races with the endless list of tasks that should be completed each day. One pressing dilemma is always water. Our tanks on the roof are empty, and the thought of another day without a drop of water weighs heavily on my mind. Water is needed for cooking, drinking, for a quick sponge bath and some essential laundry, which feels like some great extravagant luxury. A normal visit to the toilet must be planned, pre-planned, and precisely thought out so that one does not spend more water – it’s a constant balance between normal human urge, maintaining one’s sanity, and losing it all in a jiffy.

We need water in our tanks, but to pump it up, we need a water engine. And that engine needs fuel, which is scarce and expensive. Perhaps we can run the engine on electricity, I think to myself. But alas, electricity has been a luxury since the war began. Luckily, we have solar panels, a rare blessing in these troubled times. However, on cloudy days like today, there's not enough sunlight to power the engine. In the end, we are left with no choice but to rely on the one precious cylinder of cooking gas we have. It's a meager supply, one that we waited in line for hours to get. But in this unforgiving world, every drop of water is worth its weight in gold. This means that we’ll cook using firewood today, because we need to save the resources we have. Every day is a day of choosing your new priority. Is it water? Is it charging batteries and phones? Is it food and cooking?

As I write this, I can't help but wonder what tomorrow will bring. Will it be another day of impossible choices, another day of fighting to survive? So many close friends have been killed, will it be my turn tomorrow? Only time will tell.

Before the war I used to buy bread, now I make it. Before the war, I used to come back from work to home, and then I would relax on my bed and talk to my mum about my day, now it is not just boredom – it's anxiety, tension all the time. Before the war I used to have a group call with my international friends, now I struggle to search for a good signal daily to update them about my situation. Before the war I used to have a hot shower and sleep to release the fatigue of the day, now there is a lack of gas, lack of water, a symphony of relentless bombing and drones hovering over my head all night long.

Every day is Gaza is a battle against food shortages, sanitation crisis, and blackouts, andon top of all this is the ever-present fear of death. It’s been half a year since this nightmare began, and the situation gets worse every day. People in Gaza die each day because of shelling, bombing and due to the lack of all basic needs – food, water, healthcare. Innocent civilians struggle through unbearable conditions and hardships every day, every hour, and every minute. Yet, amidst the chaos, there remains a glimmer of hope. And so, we press on, facing each new day with courage and determination, uncertain of what the future may hold.

Elbit Tried and Failed to Get Our Crowdfunder for Palestine Action Defendants Taken Down

WarCrimes’R’Us Used Their Lawyers to Intimidate Chuffed Into Taking Down Our Crowdfunder But We Are Now Back Up

Demonstration Outside Wolverhampton Crown Court - the Banner Speaks Volumes

If capitalism is an immoral, asocial system that knows only profit and war then its most immoral part are the arms companies, what Eisenhower called the military-industrial complex. And no one but no one is more immoral than Elbit, Israel’s largest arms company.

For 36 hours our Crowdfunder was suspended but now it's up and running

Perhaps the title of the most genocidal and murderous regime in the world goes to the military junta in Myanmar (Burma). The junta has waged war against the Rohinga people, burning them out of their villages and massacring them. Elbit is happy to step in to enable them to commit more war crimes.

The text I agreed to remove from our Crowdfunder

Last Saturday I set up a Crowdfunder on Chuffed, which I’d been recommended to as a socially conscious crowdfunding platform. I wanted to avoid American corporations like Just Giving. By the end of Monday we had raised over £3,000 and then disaster struck.

What greeted me on Tuesday

On Tuesday I woke up to an email saying that the Crowdfunder had been temporarily taken down and we had to remove all references to Elbit as they were defamatory.

Chuffed on Twitter/X

There followed a long conversation in which I was prepared to take out most of the text criticising Elbit but I wasn’t prepared to remove the title Help Support Elbit Protesters and nor was I prepared the photograph which pictured two people holding a placard saying ‘Elbit are the real criminals’. After all that is a photo of a demonstration that took place. How can that possibly be defamatory? News organisations showing pictures of a demonstration would be protected under ‘fair comment.’

By the end of Monday we had reached a deadlock and I did some research and found out that yes, Chuffed did hold itself out to be a socially conscious crowdfunder for all sorts of campaigns, which is to its credit, but it was giving us a hard time.

What I didn’t realise was that Elbit’s overpaid lawyers had been on to Chuffed and threatened them unless the blog was taken down.

So we left it with me telling Carl that I would be left with no option but to run the Crowdfunder from my own blog and I would of course have to explain why this had happened which would inevitably mean that Chuffed suffered reputational damage amongst activists.

At this point Jennie Smith, their acting CEO emailed me from Australia asking for a WhatsApp meeting. Unfortunately because I had been blogging till the early hours and because of the different time zones we never did manage it. However Jennie made it clear that she wanted to restore the Crowdfunder.

I also contacted all those who had donated and asked them to contact Chuffed and explain why they were disappointed at what had happened and expressing the hope that it would be resolved as quickly as possible, which many did.

I am pleased to say that Jennie was happy with my compromise which was to take the criticism of Elbit out of the text but to leave in the heading and the photograph which says everything really.

So to end the story on a happy note the Crowdfunder is up and running and at the time of writing has raised £3,100. This is more than enough for the 5 Elbit Defendants in Wolverhampton and I propose to distribute it to other Defendants in Elbit trials so it should be seen as a more general defence fund.

Prominent amongst these is Amber whose crowdfunder for £5 ,000 is to pay for her legal fees as she has been denied legal aid. I intend that we donate £1,000 towards this and I hope others do too.

So this is a story with a happy ending. Unlike some other crowdfunders Chuffed did enter into correspondence with us and we reached a mutually satisfactory outcome so I would definitely recommend people use them.

Elbit provided the White Phosphorous Used for Bombing a UN School

The moral of the story is that Elbit is quite happy enabling war crimes and blowing kids to bits but it is very sensitive when people criticise them. And this is the company that British Judges have bent over backwards to protect.

The Tory Party’s Annual Xmas Party at Downing Street – Let’s Not Play Scrooge!

I am Launching a Crowdfunder to Help Ensure that No MP Goes Hungry this Xmas – Please Give Generously

Seen on a bus indicator in Brighton & Hove - as a punishment they should get the wit who wrote this to spend his vacation with Ugly Patel

There are some unkind, mean spirited people who begrudge our loyal and hard working MPs their £81,000 annual salary (plus expenses). Despite the feral press, most of us realise that many of them are struggling to make ends meet.

It cannot be right that many MPs are struggling to put food in their children's mouths whilst scroungers galore are bleeding the welfare state dry with their claims for universal credit.

Whilst the disabled live the life of Riley on benefits, Boris Johnson, who like George Washington cannot tell a lie, is forced to go cap in hand in order to raise enough dosh to wallpaper his Downing Street flat. And then they accuse him of corruption.  Unbelievable.

I can't tell you how demeaning it is that Britain's First Minister is on the bring of penury and poverty, especially now that Carrie has made an honest man of him. Indeed with a young baby Boris is forced, with his poverty pay of £161,000 to go, cap in hand, to Zac Goldsmith to provide him with a free holiday chalet.

I shall therefore be setting up a Crowdfunder, which I hope this time won't be taken down. Do please give generously.  You know they are worth it.

The Zionist Bookburners Get to Work as My Crowdfunder Gets Taken Down

Crowdfunder Caves In to Zionist Pressure after Just 2 Days

First a riddle. What is the difference between Joseph Goebbels and the Zionist Lobby? Answer: Goebbels burnt books after they were printed.  The Zionists try to burn the books before they are printed!

The decision by Crowdfunder on Tuesday to cancel my appeal was not only predictable but I predicted it! I launched a Crowdfunder for a book I have written, Zionism During the Holocaust, and sure enough pressure from the Lobby (Board of Deputies, CST, CAA, Hate not Hope etc.) guaranteed the inevitable. I received the following email from Christine McCormick [christine.mccormick@crowdfunder.intercom-mail.com]:

Hello Tony,

Your project on Crowdfunder has been flagged as breaching our guidelines. Upon review our team has confirmed that based on the information available the project is in contravention of Crowdfunder’s terms of use.

Unfortunately this means we must now close this project, refunding any pledges back to the supporters. We hope you understand that we have a duty to uphold our Terms of Use and guidelines, in the best interest of the Crowdfunder community.

Christine didn’t of course tell me who did the ‘flagging’ but then again she didn’t have to. My Crowdfunder was ‘in contravention of Crowdfunder’s terms of use’. Christine gave no indication of which terms she was referring to. Perhaps I infringed E (1.1.2(c)) which says that that:

(c) all content posted by you is lawful and not defamatory, abusive, threatening, harassing, obscene, discriminatory, or otherwise objectionable or embarrassing to any other person as determined by us in our sole discretion;

Clearly any reference to the Zionist relationship to the Nazis was bound to be objectionable and embarrassing to the Zionists. The right to offend is what Free Speech is all about. Speech that doesn't offend anyone is what keeps repressive governments in power. Crowdfunder therefore had the right to use their ‘sole discretion’ to take down the Crowdfunder but in so doing they were acting as petty censors without a principle to their name.

As Salman Rushdie, whose book Satanic Verses certainly offended many Muslims said:

“The idea that any kind of free society can be constructed in which people will never be offended or insulted is absurd.

As George Orwell observed:

“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”

The strange thing is that on Sunday Erin [erin.curran@crowdfunder.intercom-mail.com] had emailed me to say that my Crowdfunder had been extended from 28 days to Always On. Clearly Erin hadn’t spotted my breach of Crowdfunder’s Guidelines:

Hello Tony,

Thank you for your email and for your feedback. Your project has been switched over to Always On so that you can continue to accept donations.

You will receive any future pledges every couple days on a rolling basis in to your bank account within 7 working days of them being pledged once your initial payout has been processed

So what changed between Sunday and Tuesday? One can only surmise that in that time the Zionists decided to pile the pressure on Crowdfunder and that they succumbed to the pressure. Groups like Crowdfunder exist to make a profit not to benefit the public good, so the idea of defending free speech is not on their agenda. Profits come before principles.

By the time Crowdfunder had closed the Appeal, I had raised £710, over 10% of my target of £6,500.

But if Crowdfunder has been economical with the truth in their email to me they have been positively dishonest with those who had contributed.

The Crowdfunder Team [support@crowdfunder.co.uk] emailed all donors with the following message:

Hi XXX,

Unfortunately we have not been able to transfer your payment to the I want to publish Zionism During the Holocaust and we are in the process of refunding your pledge. You should see the payment in your account within 5-10 days.

Thank you for supporting this and we’re sorry this particular cause was unable to achieve its goal.

Crowdfunder is the leading UK platform helping worthy and fantastic causes raise funds to make a real difference. If you would like to explore supporting any of these projects or fundraisers, please use the link below to find a cause that would be extremely pleased to receive your support.

Thanks,
The Crowdfunder Team

Instead of saying outright that they had taken down my Appeal, because the Zionists had objected to the truth, they were told what was an outright lie:

‘Unfortunately we have not been able to transfer your payment to the I want to publish Zionism During the Holocaust’

There was of course no technical problem with the transfer of funds. And then, to compound this lie they told another:  we’re sorry this particular cause was unable to achieve its goal.’  To which the obvious response is ‘If you’re so sorry why did you take it down’ . However Corporations never tell the truth when a lie will suffice.

Where Now?

I am pleased to say that the reaction of donors has been one of outrage.  Fortunately I anticipated what was likely to happen and made sure to contact every donor informing them of my fears and giving them my email address and alternative methods of payment. The result is that many donors have increased their donation!

Once again the Zionist reaction to those who tell the truth about their racist movement is censorship. Just as they tried to prevent the play Perdition being shown and Perfidy being sold (by buying up all the copies!) so they have resorted to their tried, trusted and failed methods of suppression.

Of course they will fail in their attempts because I am determined not to let them succeed. So they will resort to their next tactic.  Outright lying. It will be suggested that by referring to Nazi-Zionist Collaboration I am accusing the Jews who died in the holocaust of having killed themselves. Of course this won’t be true but that won’t stop the Zionists from making the claim.

Nor will they tell people that it was an Israeli court which found that the leader of Hungarian Zionism, Rudolf Kasztner, had ‘sold his soul to the devil’ when he made an agreement to sacrifice all but 1,684 of Hungary's 800,000 Jews.

The exact same thing happened to Hannah Arendt, the greatest political scientist of the last century, when she published her book Eichmann in Jerusalem. Arendt’s book gave the background to the Eichmann story and how he had worked with Kasztner. Arendt went over all the things that arose in the Kasztner Trial that the Eichmann Trial had been designed to erase.

Naturally the Zionists went to any lengths to defame Arendt, who was herself a refugee from Nazi Germany. No lie was too big. Arendt wrote about how:

the campaign, conducted with all the well-known means of image-making and opinion-manipulation, got much more attention than the controversy…. (it was) as though the pieces written against the book (and more frequently against its author) came out of a mimeographing machine … the clamor centered on the image of a book which was never written, and touched upon subjects that often had not only not been mentioned by me but had never occurred to me before.

60 years later nothing much has changed. The Zionists are still trying to suppress the truth about the history of their racist project and they are still shouting ‘anti-Semitism’, even against Jewish holocaust survivors.

There is one answer to this attack on free speech. Help me get my book out. Unfortunately ‘left’ publishers in this country such as Pluto Press, Verso and Zed Press took fright. My target is £6,500 and my intention is to sell the book, which will be about 550 pages and some 190,00 words long, at around £10 including p&p (but don’t hold me to that as there are still too many variables).

If you want to help defeat the Zionist Censorship Machine please donate in any one of the following ways:
