perspective of those who supported it. Falsehoods and lies were the order of
the day. You could be forgiven for thinking that it mandated the killing of all

For the Jewish Chronicle and
the rest of the press pack attacking the messenger is more preferable than
dealing with the message.
Then there were the spurious allegations, led by Jonathan Freedland
of the Guardian, Britain’s most dishonest journalist and the
author of the ‘Anti-Semitism’ attacks on Jeremy Corbyn that the resolution was
‘anti-Semitic’. Apparently the motion was an ‘attempt to tell Jews how to think.’ Only Freedland could tell this
lie without blushing.

What is interesting is how quickly the mass media and politicians
gathered like a hunting pack to defend Zionism against the accusation that it
is racist. Gone were the tentative suggestions that Israel had maybe, perhaps
committed war crimes,

Although the press can no longer pretend that Israel isn’t committing war crimes when even the Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband accepts that they are (although the Mail and The Telegraph do their best to pretend otherwise) they are determined to ensure that their readers are kept in ignorance of why Israel behaves as it does.
On no account therefore must there be a serious debate on what Zionism really
is and why it leads inexorably to ethnic cleansing, war crimes and genocide.
Israel is too important a player in the imperialist ecosystem for people to
begin questioning what it is that makes Israel anything but a normal state.
Discussion and debate about Zionism, which is the ideology of the Israeli
state, must be avoided at all costs. Yet it is Zionism which explains why the
genocide has taken place and the overwhelming racism among Israeli Jews that enables
it to commit ethnic cleansing and war crimes by dehumanising the Palestinians.
The pretence has to be maintained that the ‘Jewish’ state is a democratic
state which has gone astray, departed from its origins as a paragon of virtue.
The Nakba too must be avoided wherever possible. Adrian Ramsay the Green MP who
has denounced the motion is reported
to have never even heard of the Nakba. As Henry Ford once said, history is bunk.
The mere fact that British politicians and the media are falling over
themselves to denounce the Zionism is
Racism motion demonstrates that its movers were absolutely correct to
propose it. It changes the debate from one over human rights to the political
question of why Israel behaves as it does.
The decision of Sandy Ruthven, Chair of Amnesty International UK to resign over the motion, accusing the Green Party of “failing to confront prejudice” and ‘courting the hard left vote’ means he’s got to go if Amnesty is to retain any credibility. Perhaps Ruthven isn’t aware that the policy of Amnesty is that Israel is an apartheid state. What is Israeli Apartheid if not racist and a creation of Zionism?

Anyone who is in any doubt about the level of racism in Israel can look up YNet’s article in 2007, 16 years before October 7, ‘Marriage to an Arab is national treason’ in which over half Israel’s Jewish population held marriage of a Jewish woman to an Arab man was ‘national treason’. Note that the respondents didn't object on religious but racial grounds.
75% did not approve of apartment buildings being shared between Arabs and Jews, 60% said they would not allow an Arab to visit their home, 40% of participants agreed that “Arabs should have their right to vote for Knesset revoked” and over half agreed that Israel should encourage its Arab citizens to leave the country.
Over half said they
would not want to work under the direct management of an Arab and 55% said “Arabs and Jews should be separated at
entertainment sites”. 31% said they felt hatred and 50% said they felt fear
when hearing Arabic spoken and over 56% said they believed that Israel’s Arab
citizens posed both a security and a demographic threat to the country.

Israel is a structurally racist society. Israeli Arabs are confined to
just 2.5% of the land when they are 20% of the population. Israeli policy restricts
Palestinians to dense population centers while maximizing the land available
for Jewish communities. Hundreds of Jewish only communities are legally entitled to bar Arabs from living
there. 93% of Israeli land is owned or controlled by the Jewish National Fund
which bars Arabs from access to ‘Jewish’ land.
Arabs are scapegoated when anything goes wrong, for example the wildfires
every summer are blamed on Israel’s Arabs. Half
the Arab villages in the Negev are ‘unrecognised’, which means they receive
no electricity or running water and are liable at a moment’s notice to be
demolished as frequently happens.
Why doesn’t Israel give equal democratic rights to the 3+ million
Palestinians living on the West Bank? The answer is, ‘because Israel is a
Jewish state’. To all these questions Zionism is the answer.
It was Israel’s Prime Minister, Netanyahu who said that Israel’s is a state of its Jewish
citizens not all of its citizens. What better description of Apartheid and
racism is there than that.

What Zionism is Not
Bella Sankey, the leader of Brighton and Hove Council was in the news threatening to bar the Green Party from hiring Brighton’s Conference Centre because of
the Zionism is Racism motion. Sankey,
who is not the sharpest tool in the box, exclaimed that the motion
dangerously
conflated the right of Jewish self-determination with the actions of the
Israeli government and risked "the safety of Jewish members and Jewish
people more broadly".
The motion didn’t mention Jewish
self-determination. It talked about Zionism. Zionism is not self-determination
for anyone, least of all Jews.
Zionism was imposed upon Jews. Until the Holocaust most Jews were opposed to Zionism. It was
Christian Zionism, in the shape of the anti-Semitic Foreign Minister Arthur
James Balfour, who set in train the adoption of Zionism by the British Empire.
One only need read the Pittsburgh Declaration of Reform
Jewry in 1885 which stated, Point 5, that
We
recognize, in the modern era of universal culture of heart and intellect, the
approaching of the realization of Israel’s great Messianic hope for the
establishment of the kingdom of truth, justice, and peace among all men. We
consider ourselves no longer a nation, but a religious community, and therefore
expect neither a return to Palestine, nor a sacrificial worship under the sons
of Aaron, nor the restoration of any of the laws concerning the Jewish state.

After approaches by British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston in 1840 and
the Earl of Shaftesbury, on 7 November 1842, the Board of Deputies declared
that they would not support any scheme based on a ‘return’ of Jews to Syria or
Palestine. Their principal concern was the achievement of Jewish Emancipation,
which they achieved in 1858.
Christian Zionism predated Jewish Zionism by 4
centuries. Was Christian Zionism a manifestation of Jewish self-determination?
It was paid up anti-Semites, from Eduard Drumont, the leader of the
anti-Dreyfusards to William Stanley Shaw, President of the British Brothers
League to Adolf Eichmann and other Nazis, who were the most ardent supporters
of Zionism because it enabled them to be rid of the Jews in their midst.

only member of Lloyd George’s War Cabinet to oppose the Balfour Declaration was
its only Jewish member, Sir Edwin Montagu?

Bella Sankey knows something
about risking the lives of people. In Brighton she has just pushed through the
closure of the last day centre for adults with learning disabilities, Wellington House. Her
concern for Jewish safety is touching.
There is no such thing as
‘Jewish self-determination’ any more than Christian or Muslim
self-determination. Being Jewish is a religion. Jews are not a people or
nation. They live among every nation. The idea of constructing states and
giving their citizens rights according to religion went out with feudalism.
That was what the French Revolution was about. On 23 December 1789, Count
Stanislas de Clermont-Tonnerre stated during a French National Assembly debate that
“The Jews should be denied
everything as a nation, but granted everything as individuals.” Ignoramuses like Bella Sankey fling around
words, the meaning of which they have no understanding of.
Only nations have the right
to self-determination. Israeli Jews, have no right to self-determination
because they are oppressing another nation and are not in any event a nation.
British Jews are British not Israeli. Zionism had as its principal object the
establishment of a ‘Jewish’ state, a settler colonial state.
What Zionism is
Zionism is a settler
colonial ideology which was summed up in an early Zionist slogan which said
that Palestine was a ‘land without a
people for a people without a land.’ The first use of this slogan by Jewish Zionists was by
Israel Zangwill in 1901, though the slogan was first coined by Christian
Zionists.
Zionism from its very start
sought to exclude the Palestinians from the land. The Labour Zionist ‘trade
union’ Histadrut campaigned for Jewish Labour i.e. a Boycott of Arab Labour. It
was the Second Aliyah, the Labour Zionist wave of immigration from 1904-14,
which campaigned around these policies. It created an economy within an economy
as part of building a state within a state.
The idea of transfer, i.e. expulsion, was present in Zionism from the very beginning. That was the
meaning of a Jewish State. It was first espoused by Theodor Herzl, the founder
of Political Zionism in his Diaries in 1895 where he wrote
"We shall try to spirit
the penniless population across the border by ... denying it employment in our country
... Both the process of expropriation and the removal of of the poor must be
carried out discreetly and circumspectly.
When Zionism arose it was
opposed by most Jews. They saw Zionism as a form of Jewish Anti-Semitism. That
is why it is ridiculous to associate anti-Zionism with Anti-Semitism today.
Anti-Zionism was originally a Jewish monopoly.
It was Zionism, through its
institutions such as the Jewish National Fund which insisted that on land they
purchased no non-Jews should be employed. No better history of what this meant
can be found that the Hope Simpson Report of 1930, compiled after the Arab-Jewish
riots of 1929.
The Report noted that the
land leases to Jewish tenants stipulated that
"
. . . . The lessee undertakes to execute all works connected with the
cultivation of the holding only with Jewish labour. Failure to comply with this
duty by the employment of non-Jewish labour shall render the lessee liable to
the payment of a compensation of ten Palestinian pounds for each default.
When the Israeli state was founded the
JNF became a para state body, an arm of the Israeli state at one stage removed.
This was formalised in the JNF
Law of 1953.
According to Zionist dictates Arabs are always a 'threat' because they consist of the 'wrong' ethnicity - something that Caroline Lucas is happy with
This is Zionism. Israeli
society is built on Zionist doctrines. The Police, the Army, land distribution,
planning. Preference is given to Jews
above non-Jews in every single area. Only in Israel is the fear
of the ‘demographic threat’ of an Arab birthrate which might reduce the
Jewish percentage of the population, present.
"If there
is a demographic problem, and there is, it is with the Israeli Arabs who will
remain Israeli citizens… to ensure the Jewish character was not engulfed by
demography, it was necessary to ensure a Jewish majority’
Netanyahu
warned that ‘If Israel's Arabs become well integrated and reach 35-40 percent
of the population, there will no longer be a Jewish state but a bi-national
one’. [Ha’aretz, 16.12.2003] This is the
reality of a ‘Jewish’ state. It is a racial, ethno-supremacist state. Forever
looking over your shoulder at how many Arabs are born in the night is racist.
Racism is part of the DNA of Zionism and those who pretend otherwise are lying.
If anyone in Britain were to
express fears of the birthrate of Black people surpassing that of White people
they would be called racists. In Israel it is state policy. Hence there are
official policies for the ‘Judaisation’
of the Negev, Galilee and East Jerusalem.

by Lubna Speitan
On 4th
October 2026, by historic vote, the Green Party passed the motion Zionism is
Racism.
As many
human rights organisations have said for years: an understanding of Zionist
settler colonialism is necessary for a comprehensive articulation of Israel’s
apartheid regime and its root causes.
The
political ideology of Zionism which has and continues to disposes, displace and
murder Palestinians, because they are Palestinian, is racist. That is an
uncontroversial statement of fact. If you implement apartheid, as the ICJ, the
United Nations and every major human rights organisation has found Israel does,
you are a racist.
The
international discourse on Palestine has obfuscated the root causes of the
Israeli regime’s prolonged, widespread, systematic human rights violations, and
extreme material discrimination. The motion recognises and seeks to reverse the
damaging role which Britain has played in the situation in Palestine.
Those who
support Zionism have failed to identify a coherent counter argument to the
policy. Instead, they have resorted to personal attacks against those who
support it, including me. Because I am one of (many, many, many) people who
support this motion.
In response
to those personal attacks, I make the following statement:
1. I reject all defamatory and nonsense claims made about me and other
Anti-Zionist members of the party and movement.
2. I reject all attempts to decontextualise past statements I have made. In
particular, the notorious and discredited Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA)
has, in usual fashion, attempted to criminalise me for my political views and
activism. The CAA has been found by a court to be a dishonest, manipulative,
vile actor, and has no credibility to make any allegation against anyone.
3. This is a classic distraction. I am not the conversation. Racism is.
Zionism is. The ethnic cleansing and genocide of Palestinians is.
Let’s talk
about that.
Leading the charge against the Green Party is none
other than Jonathan Freedland, who also initiated the ‘anti-Semitism’ smear
campaign against Corbyn.
It is in the interest of Zionists like Freedland to
conflate Zionism and being Jewish and then raise the threat of an expulsion of
Jewish members. He absurdly says that ‘Saying
Kaddish [the prayer for the dead] could
lead to his expulsion’.
The argument being that because a majority, albeit a
declining majority, of British Jews describe themselves as Zionists, that they
will immediately be banned from the Green Party. The invention of these racists
is endless.
Apart from the fact that disagreement with the motion
has no constitutional consequences, it specifically refers to Zionism not
Zionists. No Green Party Zionist need feel afraid unless they are open racists
or supporters of the Genocide in Palestine.
Freedland goes to some lengths to avoid calling the
Genocide in Gaza by its name and for very good reasons. Genocide is the intention
to destroy a people or group, in whole or in part. That is exactly what
Israel is doing in Gaza and now the West Bank. The deliberate destruction of
the Palestinian people. Hence Freedland refers to Israel’s ‘military bombardment’ and ‘revulsion at the catastrophic
devastation of Gaza’. Anything but genocide.
We
then get a fairy tale of pre-48 Israel, not of the bombing of Arab markets by
the Zionist Irgun militia but where you had
cultural
Zionists slugging it out with religious Zionists, Marxist Zionists raging
against rightwing militaristic Zionists, all of them wholly at odds with the
dominant group: socialist Zionists. What they had in common was the simple
belief that Jews had the right of self-determination in their ancestral
homeland, the land they had for millennia called Eretz Yisrael, the
Land of Israel, and which the rest of the world called Palestine.
There
are a number of lies and half-truths here. The dominant ‘socialist Zionists’
were not socialists and did not call themselves socialists. The ‘Marxist
Zionists’, Ahdut Ha'Avodah, were the most militaristic Zionists based at
Kibbutz Ein Harod. Their Palmach militia committed some of the worst atrocities
in the Nakba. Nakba is a word Freedland doesn’t
mention.
But
the biggest lie is that Palestine was
the ‘ancestral homeland’ of the Jews.
It was no such thing.. European Jews came from Europe not Palestine. Their only
connection with Palestine was religious. When the European Jewish colonists
began coming to Palestine post 1882 the existing Jewish community (the Old
Yishuv) was opposed to both them and Zionism and remained so for some 40 years.
Most
Jews at the time of the Roman conquest of Palestine and even before then had emigrated
to other Arab countries in the Mediterranean. Some 4 million were estimated to
have emigrated. Those left behind either converted to Christianity and then
Islam or they remained of the Jewish faith.
The
Crusaders conquered Jerusalem on July 15, 1099, during the First Crusade. The entry
into the city was marked by mass slaughter and
burning of the Jewish and Muslim populations. It was
Saladin who conquered Jerusalem on October 2, 1187, ending 88 years of Crusader rule who invited
the Jews to return and resettle in the city around 1190.
As
Professor Rabbi Pereira wrote
in the Times of Israel (9.12.25)
After nearly ninety years of systematic
exclusion from their holiest city, Jews throughout the Mediterranean world received
extraordinary news: Saladin, the Kurdish sultan who had just conquered
Jerusalem from the Crusaders, was formally inviting them to return to the city
of their ancestors. This momentous proclamation marked a dramatic reversal of
Crusader policy, which had banned all Jewish settlement in Jerusalem since the
devastating conquest of 1099
So
much for the neo-liberal nonsense of the Judeo-Christian heritage. All of this
history is ignored by prostitute journalists, like Freedland who would have you
believe that
‘what it means to be a Zionist (is) that you
believe in a Jewish national home in some portion of historic Palestine.’
This
is the rubbish that is repeated by fools like Bella Sankey. Jews have a home
which is where they live. Israel is a European settler colonial state, nothing
more. Zionism is and always was a colonial enterprise and when colonialism was
seen as a good thing they openly admitted as such.
When
Theodor Herzl wrote to Cecil Rhodes in 1902 he explained
why he was writing to him:
"You are being invited to help make history. It
doesn’t involve Africa, but a piece of Asia Minor; not Englishmen, but Jews […]
How, then, do I happen to turn to you since this is an out-of-the-way matter
for you? How indeed? Because it is something colonial."
Vladimir Jabotinsky, the founder of
Revisionist Zionism, the strand that rules Zionism today wrote in his famous
article The
Iron Wall:
My
readers have a general idea of the history of colonisation in other countries.
I suggest that they consider all the precedents with which they are acquainted,
and see whether there is one solitary instance of any colonisation being
carried on with the consent of the native population. There is no such
precedent.
The
native populations, civilised or uncivilised, have always stubbornly resisted
the colonists, irrespective of whether they were civilised or savage. And it
made no difference whatever whether the colonists behaved decently or not.
Freedland tells us that ‘ when I say the prayer, I
will, following tradition, be facing east – towards Jerusalem…’ That is true.
No one denies that the centre of the Jewish religion is focused on
Palestine but so too is Christianity and
Islam. A religious orientation does not mean a political centre.
When 2.5 million Jews left Russia between the middle
of the 19th century and 1914 barely 1% went to Palestine. There was
nothing stopping them but for most Jews Jerusalem lay in the United States not
Palestine.
Freedland cites Israel as ‘a refuge from
antisemitism’ yet today Israel is the main cause of Anti-Semitism since Jews
are associated with the barbarities of the so-called Jewish state.
Conclusion
The fierce reaction by the ruling class and
its press to the passing of the Green Party resolution was entirely
predictable. As were the cries of ‘Anti-Semitism’ and the treachery of people
like Caroline Lucas and the Green MPs.
There is a fierce political battle on our
hands and our opponents will not hesitate to employ every dirty trick in the
book and use every lie at their command. Jews will be the moral alibi for the
support of British imperialism for the warrior state that is Israel. Despite
shedding fake tears over the genocide you can be sure that those crying
‘Anti-Semitism’ over the hurt feelings of British Jews are no more concerned
about genuine anti-Semitism than any other form of racism.
Green Party members who support the
Palestinians must be aware that the struggle of the Palestinians against
imperialism and its Israeli satrap is but part of a wider fight against both
imperialism and capitalism. Anyone who is serious about climate change needs
their head examining if they think a political and economic system whose
driving motive is profit and exploitation is going to sacrifice the needs of
their companies for the greater good.
Donald Trump with his hostility to climate
change is a good representative of the system that we face. With his threats to
destroy the International Criminal Court Trump acts like a mafiosa don.
Caroline Lucas is the fragrant face of capitalism but both Trump and Lucas are
united in defence of the Israeli state. It’s just that Trump is more honest.
The Green Party is facing
the equivalent of a civil war and it will be for the left to rise and meet the
challenge. There is no doubt that Polanski attracted thousands of people to
join the Greens. The Establishment Greens like Caroline Lucas, aided by the gutter
press will fight on behalf of the Establishment. It is up to us to resist them
and turn the Green Party into an eco-socialist party.
