Irish Parliamentary Committee Call for ban on Israeli settlement imports

An Oireachtas Committee is to write to the Tanaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamonn Gilmore, calling for a ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements

This is a great victory for all of us struggling to hold Israel accountable for its egregious and ongoing violations of Palestinian rights and international law. We sincerely hope the Irish parliament will overwhelmingly pass this proposal.
What is especially important in this particular decision by a powerful committee of the Irish parliament is that it seems to be focused on the products of companies working in Israel's illegal colonies, not just on products. And it is a clear step in the direction of boycotting all products of Israel, as South African products were boycotted during apartheid, until it fully complies with its obligations under international law.
Irish PSC Ad in Irish Times
Senator Jim Walsh (FF) is quoted in the article saying: “In the background we shouldn’t rule out banning all Israeli products”. Exactly!

The difference between boycotting/banning products of companies that produce in or procure from settlements and boycotting/banning settlement products is the difference between having a palpable, measurable and sustainable impact on promoting human rights and international law or just making a symbolic gesture towards that end. The Palestinian BDS National Committee has welcomed such gestures, but saw them as only a first step in the direction of targeting complicit companies.
Banning products of companies producing (even partially) in settlements or procuring (even partially) from settlements is traceable, effective and not just symbolic; it is legally justified as these companies are violating international law even if only part of their products are illegal. Whereas banning "settlement products" based on labeling that ostensibly distinguishes these products as originating from settlements is merely symbolic; it is ineffective and cannot lead to true accountability for violating international law, as a result. This is mainly due to the fact that Human Rights Watch and many other groups realize: Israel cheats, systematically and persistently.

For more on the legal issues pertaining to state responsibilities in relation to Israel's colonial enterprise see this recent legal memorandum which was recently by Al-Haq and authored by Ingrid Jaradat.
This new Irish parliamentary move should become a model to be emulated by all European lawmakers who claim to care about human rights and international law; it is a concrete and unsubstantial step towards ending official Europe's deep complicity in Israel's occupation, colonization and apartheid.

Call for ban on Israeli settlement imports

An Oireachtas Committee is to write to the Tanaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamonn Gilmore, calling for a ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements

KITTY HOLLAND

An Oireachtas Committee is to write to the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamonn Gilmore, calling for a national ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements.

All members of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade were supportive of a submission today from the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), a human rights observer organisation, calling for such a ban.

Joe O’Brien, advocacy co-ordinator with EAPPI said the illegal Israeli settlements in the Palestinian West Bank had “long been recognised by the UN, the US and the EU as the biggest barrier to peace” in the region.

He said Ireland could take a powerfully symbolic and moral stance by banning produce from illegal Israeli settlements from the Irish market.

Among the goods on sale in Ireland and produced in the illegal settlements were agricultural crops, plastic garden furniture produced by Keter, a company in the illegal settlement of Ariel, and Soda Stream products produced in the Mishor Edomim industrial park, east of Jerusalem in occupied Palestinian territory.

Though the value of products from the illegal settlements is small here - about €7 to €8 million a year, he said the move would be internationally very important.

“We have the reality of illegal settlement produce in Ireland. The Government has, in our view and in the view of an eminent legal expert [Professor of international law at University of Cambridge, James Crawford] the legal framework to institute a ban.

“Ireland is connected to the illegal settlement policies and realities and what we are proposing is a simple washing of hands.”

Senator Jim Walsh (FF) said he concurred with the call for a ban on produce from the illegal settlements and said: “In the background we shouldn’t rule out banning all Israeli products”.

Eric Byrne, TD, (Labour), said the Government should take a lead in Europe by instituting such a ban and should champion an EU-wide ban during Ireland’s presidency next year.

Another Victory for BDS - Norway Removes the Karmel-instituttet from list of tax deductible organisations

No more tax deductables for funding settlements in occupied territory

Following advocacy-work and pressure from Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) and the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees (NUMGE), the Norwegian Ministry of Finance today announced their decision to exclude the Norwegian organisation “Karmel-instituttet” from the list of organisations that the Norwegian public may get tax deductions for providing funds to. The reason behind the decision is that the organisation provides financial support to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

'We are very pleased that the Ministry of Finance has made this decision, based on the fact that Karmel provides funds to the illegal Israeli settlements. The decision follows a letter sent by NPA and NUMGE in January this year, asking them to look into the issue’, says the Secretary-General of NPA, Liv Tørres.

The Ministry of Finance, in their press release today, writes that their intention is to ensure that the system of tax deductions does not benefit organisations that actively support or contribute to acts that are in contravention of international law. On the basis of information from the Karmel-institute about their transfer of financial support to Israeli settlements and the organisation’s own stated intention to continue providing such support, the Ministry of Finance has decided that gifts to the organization are no longer tax-deductible.

Commenting on the decision, Stein Guldbrandsen of NUMGE said: ‘Norwegian citizens who have provided financial support to Karmel-instituttet through the years must now contemplate that their support has constituted a contribution to breaches of international law’.
Israel's Ghetto Wall

Tørres and Gulbrandsen promise that the NPA and NUMGE will continue to focus on how we may prevent all Norwegian financial support to the Israeli settlements’ and add that ‘we see the decision of the Ministry of Finance as an important political signal from the Norwegian government, that such activities are unacceptable’.

Background-information:

NPA and NUMGE’s work on Norwegian links to the Israeli occupation: In May 2012, NPA and NUMGE released a report (in Norwegian) looking at Norwegian links to the Israeli occupation, in the form of trade with, investments in and financial support to the settlements or corporations that are involved in the Israeli occupation.

The report can be downloaded in Norwegian here

Karmel-instituttet: This Norwegian organisation has for a number of years provided financial support to the illegal Israeli settlement of Alonei Shilo, in the occupied Palestinian territories. According to the organization, around half of the houses in the settlement (23 caravan-homes and 3 “study centres”) are paid for through funds collected by Karmel-instituttet from Norwegian citizens. In addition to being illegal according to international law, the settlement of Alonei Shilo does not have an official permit from the Israeli government, and is hence an illegal settlement also according to Israeli law.

The legal basis for the decision: Effective from 1 January 2012, the Norwegian Ministry of Finance can remove organisations from the list of organisations approved for tax-deductible gifts, with the stated purpose of ensuring Norwegian follow-up of resolutions from the UN Security Council. One such resolution is UN SC Resolution 465 (1980), which calls on all states ‘not to provide Israel with any assistance to be used specifically in connection with settlements in the occupied territories’. As tax-deductions should be seen as a form of government-subsidizing, the letter from NPA and NUMGE asking the Ministry to look into the case of Karmel, referring to this resolution as the basis for the request. The Ministry of Finance, in their decision on the issue, did not refer to particular UN resolutions or international conventions, but stated that their intention is to ensure that the system of tax deductions does not benefit organisations that actively support or contribute to acts that are in contravention of international law.

Sabra & Shatilla - the Palestinian Liddice

Butchered by Israel’s Fascist Friends

The Palestinians have known many tragedies.  When I went to Lebanon in 1979, at the invitation of the PLO, it was via Syria because the Lebanese Embassy in London, controlled by the Phalangists, refused to issue a visa.

The Phalange, named after the Spanish fascist Falange, were founded by Pierre Gemayel, an open supporter of Hitler.  It was no surprise that the Phalangists had been close friends and allies of Israel.  When Bashir Gemayel, who had been ‘elected’ to President under Lebanon’s confessional state structure, he was assassinated a few days later, almost certainly by the Syrians, who had been invited into Lebanon to suppress the Left in the Civil War in 1977.

When I arrived I crossed into East Beirut and saw the ruins of the Tal a Zaatar refugee camp which had been annihilated by the Christian phalangist militias.  I also visited the refugee camps of Sabra and Shatilla.  In 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon and perpetrated what can only be described as genocide.  20,000 were killed and over 100,000 were injured.  Under Ariel Sharon, Likud’s Defence Minister, Israeli troops lay siege to Beirut.  As Arafat and his men moved out to Tunisia, Israeli troops moved in.  Between the 16th and 18th September 1982, up to 3,000 Palestinians were slaughtered by the armed Phalangist militias, seeking revenge for the assassination of Bashir Gemayel.

Israeli troops provided them with cover and helpfully provided lighting by firing flares into the night sky.  For 3 nights Israeli troops did nothing as the massacre unfolded.  The impact across the world was instantaneous and even in Israel, for the first and last time, a mass demonstration, firstly of 100,00 and then 400,000 protested at the savagery perpetrated in their name.  Israel’s Kahan commission held Sharon directly responsible.  The UN’s own Committee of Inquiry under Sean MacBride found Israel directly responsible for what had happened and indeed it had literally set the Phalangist forces on the camp, actually turning back fleeing refugees.
Janet Lee Stevens, an American journalist, later wrote  to her husband, Dr. Franklin Lamb,[28]
"I saw dead women in their houses with their skirts up to their waists and their legs spread apart; dozens of young men shot after being lined up against an alley wall; children with their throats slit, a pregnant woman with her stomach chopped open, her eyes still wide open, her blackened face silently screaming in horror; countless babies and toddlers who had been stabbed or ripped apart and who had been thrown into garbage piles."
Sabra and Shatilla and the invasion of Lebanon changed the image of Israel forever in the West.  No longer was Israel seen as the plucky David of the Middle East.  Instead it came to be seen as the surrogate of the United States, an example of ethnic cleansing in action.  I remember how the Peace Now campaign, which had organised the demonstrations in Israel, came to be used as a propaganda tool by the Likud administration under Begin.

I spoke on a number of campuses and remember the first Union General Meeting at Sussex well.  They had a Peace Now speaker and the Zionists tried to stop me speaking on grounds of ‘anti-Semitism’.  That went down like a lead balloon.  A motion, calling for a democratic, secular state in Palestine, which I supported was proposed, it passed by about 2-1 in a meeting of nearly 900 students in Sussex’s Mandela Hall.
Earlier in the summer I had chaired the inaugural meeting of the Labour Committee on Palestine, with Andrew Hornung as Secretary and Ted Knight as Treasurer.  Later that year the WRP, with which Knight was associated, took over the LCP with the support of Socialist Action, and we had to set up another campaign.  But when it was formed the LCP was almost immediately successful, with the Labour Party nationally passing an emergency motion supporting a democratic, secular state in Palestine!

The victims of Sabra and Shatilla suffered the most bestial of crimes at the hands of Israel’s fascist surrogates.  Crimes which surpassed the savagery of the Nazis and were only emulated by Romania’s Iron Guard.  But the legacy of Sabra and Shatilla has changed the political climate in the West ever since.

“They shot my father in the head”: interview with survivor of Sabra and Shatila massacre

Moe Ali Nayel The Electronic Intifada Sabra-Shatila camp 19 September 2012

On Sunday, the 30th anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre was commemorated by people of different nationalities around the world. In Lebanon the commemoration was only observed by Palestinians living in refugee camps; Lebanese people were not concerned.

The massacre carried out by the Phalange, a Christian Maronite militia acting in full cooperation with Israel, was among the most atrocious episodes of recent history. But it is still absent from our collective Lebanese memory.

The Sabra and Shatila massacre is another taboo in Lebanon that needs to be addressed publicly and soberly; maybe admitting the wrongdoing could prevent us from further subjugating the Palestinian refugees who are residing here temporarily until they return to their occupied homeland.

The perpetrators of the massacre are still alive and could be found inside and outside Lebanon; so too are some of the witnesses who survived the massacre, and lost their loved ones. They are still awaiting justice.

On 16 September 1982, Jameela Khalifeh was a teenage girl. The three long days of slaughter still haunts her memories.

This week, Khalifeh welcomed us with a smile to her dim apartment on the busy Sabra strip. Outside, there was bustling life: people stopping and shopping at vegetable stalls and bootleg DVD stores.

“I was 16 and had just got engaged,” Kahlifeh said. “I was living at my parents’ home with three sisters and my brother.”

“We won’t forget”

Holding out a photo, she added: “This is my father Mohammad Khalifeh, this picture was taken after they shot him in the head and dumped his body on the side of the street.” On the back of the picture, there is a certificate issued by the Palestine Liberation Organization. It contains Mohammad’s name and the words “So we won’t forget.”

“On 16 September, during the invasion, Israeli soldiers descended onto the camp from the Sports City stadium located on a hilltop overlooking the camp. We knew that the Israelis were stationed in the stadium and they [the Israelis] knew that the fedayeen [PLO fighters] had evacuated the camp, therefore we assured each other they wouldn’t kill us unarmed families.

“Next to the Israeli soldiers there were the Phalange militants who spoke in a Lebanese dialect; each militant dressed in a cowboy hat and a white armband with a green cedar on it [the logo of the Phalangists’ political party]. I remember the Israelis were speaking broken Arabic to the Lebanese militants but mostly they spoke in Hebrew. My mother understood Hebrew from the time she used to live in Palestine before 1948.

“While we were fleeing, we got stopped by a Phalange militant who pointed his rifle to my mother’s belly, but the Israeli soldier told the Lebanese militant, ‘Don’t kill the Madam and the babies; we are here to kill men only.’ We came out to the streets; my father was with us in the shelter beneath the building, and the Israelis — with the Phalangists — started to call us through microphones urging us to come out from the shelters, announcing: ‘If you surrender you will be safe.’

“Overwhelming stench”

“We came out from the shelter to the street; I remember the stench was overwhelming, and I was waving a white piece of cloth. My father finally decided to come out with us from the shelter. I made sure to stay by his side; I was truly attached to my father, holding his hand tight.

“The moment we emerged we were taken by Israeli soldiers and Lebanese militants. At this point my father became nervous. He looked at me and whispered, ‘I’m going home.’ The moment we joined families from the camp led by the militants, my father panicked, let go of my hand and ran home. When he got home he found militants inside the building, searching it, so he immediately ran back to us.

“While he was running towards us: they shot him in the head. My mother saw him getting shot, I didn’t.

“While we were being led at gunpoint, we found a small alley that led to the camp so we split off from the marching, cattled crowds and made it back to the main mosque in the camp. The mosque was full of people from Shatila. On arrival, we told them that they [the Phalange] are killing and slaughtering families but the elders of the camp said we were lying; that there was nothing, that we should calm down. Upon our insistence the elders decided to go see what was going on. The elder men never came back to the mosque. After waiting in the mosque for few hours with no news about the elders we and other families went to Gaza hospital at the the entrance to Sabra.

“We used to live in the street of Hay al-Gharbi next to the Doukhi grocery store. In our neighborhood only my family and our neighbor survived the killing, the rest were all killed. I remember seven or eight corpses on top of each other, in the street below our building; we had to step over them.

“The Israelis and Phalangists led us in a march, to finish us, to kill us like they did to the others. Luckily, we managed to escape through the alley. The Israelis were dressed in full military uniform with iron helmets. The Lebanese militants were dressed in cowboy hats, blue jeans and daggers hanging from their belts. Some among them wore black ski masks. All carried Kalashnikovs.

Putting Sharon in the dock

“A few years ago 300 of us hired the lawyer Shibli Mallat to sue Ariel Sharon [Israel’s defense minister in 1982, and later, prime minister] for the massacre and we wanted to take him to a tribunal in Belgium. We saw pictures of Sharon standing at the sports stadium next to Israeli tanks overlooking the camp, and we know he was watching the massacre and the killing of Palestinians. I still want Sharon to be put on trial even if he, ironically, has been in a coma for years and clinically dead.

“Thirty years after the massacre, take a look at how we live. We are seven people staying in two small rooms. Our life has been deteriorating for the last 30 years; we still can’t work and can’t move outside the camp to a decent place. We buy drinking and washing water on a daily basis. We buy electricity from a generator; the Lebanese government only gives us two hours of power a day. My two sons work at an aluminum factory. Because they are Palestinian they get paid less than their coworkers. And my 23-year-old daughter works at a café.

“My daughter went to get a loan from a bank like her coworkers did but when she got to the bank and showed her papers they told her, ‘Sorry, you can’t get a loan because you are Palestinian.’ Being a Palestinian in Lebanon is a daily, ongoing struggle for survival. That’s why each time a woman gives birth we make sure the newborn is brought up to believe in the right of return to Palestine and we emphasize that we are only guests here.

“We want to return to Palestine but until then I want to leave this country and go anywhere we’ll be treated as human beings. We never gave up, Palestine is ours, and we are going to return, but we are tired of not being able to live an honorable, decent life.

“We are from Jaffa. My mother never stops talking about the time she lived in Jaffa, and the way Israelis started coming as refugees, at first sheltering in houses, then starting to push Palestinians out of their houses.”

Atrocity ignored

On 16 September this year, Pope Benedict XVI visited Beirut, where he urged the Lebanese — both Christians and Muslims — to coexist in peace. The pope preached on various issues concerning the region but failed to mention the Sabra and Shatila massacre and the plight of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Many were furious with his omission of any reference to the massacre in his public address on Beirut’s waterfront. As he was speaking on the anniversary of the massacre, the omission was all the more hurtful.

The Sabra and Shatila massacre is one of many atrocities that occurred during the long years of the Lebanese civil war. Ironically, political leaders, who were then warlords, were sitting on the frontline on Sunday during the Pope’s sermon; among those leaders were members of the Phalangist party, who are believed to be responsible for the massacre in Sabra and Shatila.

There will come a day when Lebanon will break the taboo of the Sabra and Shatila massacre and justice will be served to the families of the thousands killed 30 years ago. But until that day comes, Palestinian refugees will still be marginalized, living in inhumane conditions inside overcrowded camps.

Haunted by Ahava

A lively protest outside Ecostream

Sodastream/Ecostream -  On the Rocks

I have been getting a steady drip of comments from a couple of mentally unhinged Zionists.  They seem to be suffering from a psychosis best summed up as ‘haunted by Ahava.’
The EDL turned out to 'defend' Ahava
Ahava, some readers might recall, was the Israeli stolen-‘beauty’ shop that was forced to cease trading in London’s Covent Garden by a protest campaign that lasted two years.  Eventually neighbouring shops had enough and pressurised the landlord not to renew their lease.
Sodastream, which also operates in the Occupied Territories, has decided to be much more up front than Ahava.  It openly defends the Occupation and uses the old Apartheid argument of saying that it is doing the natives good by employing them (forgetting that it has destroyed their economy in the process).

The Ahava protests reached their zenith (or plumbed new depths even for Zionists) when the fascist English Defence League, many of whom are open holocaust deniers, turned out in  support of their Zionist compatriots!  Even worse, Zionist Federation co-chairman Jonathan Hoffman was pictured merrily dancing down the street with the Jewish Division of EDL’s main organiser, Roberta Moore.
Sodastream is more sussed and it has engaged in a more overt PR strategy, summed up by the term Green wash, which is coming off the rails.  Having had a PR puff in the Guardian earlier this week about its designer Yves Behar, Shafic Mansour of SOAS brought them down to earth with an excellent letter about what the real designs of this apartheid company actually are.

Coincidentally I also had a letter in the local Argus today pointing out that their reporter was mistaken, or most probably lied to, when told it was passers-by who were complaining of the noise of the demonstration, rather than the shop owner and a few Zionist friends.  Despite an absurd addition to the letter (to the effect that the West Bank is ‘disputed territory’ – maybe next time you’re mugged your assailant will say your wallet is disputed!) it made most of the necessary points.
EDL at Ahava - 'birds of a feather' and all that
But our opponents seem besides themselves.  First I had the Manager of the shop posting to this blog:
‘So. you want to come to my store and preach to me about civil rights or Palestinians. Fuck you, you upset the people I work with who I love and respect, who are moral, ethical people and harass, bully and intimidate them. Next Saturday, pull that shit on me, an out and proud homosexual male, and I'll tell you white middle class ***** a thing or two about segregation, discrimination and ethnic cleansing. Bring it on you BDS c****, bring it the **** on.’
So embarrassing was the comment, which naturally I posted (though I had to replace some of the expletives with *** since this is a family blog) that Ecostream found itself obliged to post the following comment:

ecostream said...
The post above has not come from any manager of SodaStream UK or ecostream, as has been claimed.

Yes quite and kosher pigs can fly too!

Then there was another Zionist, who tried to do a passable  impersonation of something that occasionally sticks to your shoe, trying to attack me via my disabled son who I bring to the demonstrations.  And then another Zionist loony sent the following to the blog:
‘You're a Commie racist bigotted shit Greenstein. Israel has done nothing illegal and the shop is trading legally. You pull the same stunts as you did with Ahava and the Brighton police will have you. They are a lot less tolerant of your crap than the London police. That shop is surrounded by more surveillance equipment than Fort Knox. Back off, scum.’
After only three weeks we are getting to them!  It is hardly necessary to point out that only in the warped mindset of your average Zionist does opposing racism make you a racist.  But Orwell's doublethink is popular with Zionist campaigners.  Opposing racism makes you a racist.  Having friends like Anders Breivik, the Norwegian mass murderer, is just one of those accidents of life.  If the Zionists had 2 brain cells to rub together they might ask themselves why local and European fascists love them so.

Of course there’s nothing illegal in Israeli law in stealing land and resources of the Bedouin and driving them into townships,.  Israel was founded using similar methods and settler-colonialism has always behaved similarly, hence the adoration of the neo-Nazi right for the Israeli state.  But what irks our foaming at the mouth Zionists is the fact that their tactics no longer work.  Nearly all the passers-by were supportive.  Indeed the only support our loony Zionists and Christian Bible Bashers obtain is from the Police.  Now there's a surprise.

But as to backing off – no chance mate – the campaign is only just taking off!

Anti-Austerity Protests Sweep West Bank

The protests erupting in the West Bank against former World Bank Executive and unelected Palestinian 'Prime Minister' Salam Fayyad emphasise that national struggle and the fight for social liberation are intertwined.  The Palestinian elite have sold their souls for the bribes Israel pay thems.  In return the Palestinian Authority acts as Israel's agent in helping perpetuate the Occupation.
Attack on demonstrators by Palestinian police
With their security forces trained by the Americans in Jordan and its personnel vetted by Israel, the Palestinian Authority is no more than a satrap, at best for Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
Palestinian  police attacks protester

It is no wonder that when the protests began to achieve a critical mass that Netanyahu rushed to send the equivalent of £250m in tax receipts to the PA to keep it afloat and urged European and US governments to do likewise.
Palestinian police tear gas protestors

The PA is an invaluable ally of the Israeli occupation.  It allows Palestinian faces to suppress the Palestinians without any apparent Israeli involvement.  Not only is it cheaper economically but politically too it is more effectve.  In return the Palestinians have their own city statelet in Ramallah (although Israeli security operates with impunity there and throughout Area A which it purportedly controls).
Riot police put up shields as defence against stones

That is why the slogans at the youth demonstration are so important, because Fayyad and Abbas have even less power than Quisling did in Norway.  They are Bibi's Palestinian puppets, dancing on strings.  The real enemy is the Zionist occupation.

 Hebron Demonstrations Against PA

HEBRON, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinians protesting a rising cost of living in the West Bank pelted a government building with stones and burned tires in the streets on Monday, in a sign that a nascent movement against the Western-backed government could spiral out of control.
The violence is likely to set alarm bells ringing, not least in Israel, where security chiefs have warned of the risk of unrest at a time of growing economic hardship coupled with total paralysis in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.
A crowd stones Hebron police station

Riot police were deployed outside the building which was attacked in Hebron by more than a 100 youths. Elsewhere in the occupied West Bank protesters blocked the main entrances to cities, setting tires ablaze.

Youths attack Hebron police station

Earlier on Monday more than a thousand Palestinians had joined a rally in Hebron, which is accustomed to violent confrontations with Israeli settlers but is not used to inter-Palestinian discord.
Public transport workers also staged a strike across the small territory to demand a cut in fuel costs, preventing many people from getting to their work, while a number of schools reported low attendance.

Taxi drivers blocked the street in front of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad's office in the West Bank administrative capital Ramallah, while dozens of youths urged him to "leave, leave," echoing a slogan made popular in the Arab Spring.

The West Bank protest movement kicked off last week, when the price of fuel was increased by five percent after key suppliers in Israel hiked their charges.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has welcomed the demonstrations, equating them with the Arab Spring and blaming Israeli policies for the economic turbulence.

However, public anger has so far been directed solely at his own administration rather than at Israel.

In a move that could spark further trouble, Palestinian Finance Minister Nabil Kassis said on Monday that civil servants earning over 2,000 shekels ($502) a month would only receive part of their August pay because of an on-going cash crisis.

The PA's financial woes, caused in part by a fall in aid donations, especially from Gulf states, has delayed salary payments for 153,000 civil servants several times already in 2012, with no solution in sight.

Campaign to Close Down Sodastream Shop Begins in Earnest

Despite Police Harassment Almost Total Public Opposition to the Ethnic Cleansing Shop

Local Argus newspaper covers the protest - and gets it wrong as per usual!

Sodastream has turned into Ecostream - a Greening of Ethnic Cleansing

Not a customer in sight
The shop manager resorts to offering free drinks to entice custom
Over the road the Christian Zionist is engaged in conversation with Police as to how to best shut the campaign down
Sodastream (or Ecostream – its attempts to endear itself to Green  Brighton) is beginning to make itself very unpopular in Brighton.  All 750 leaflets we produced were taken as barely a single customer entered the shop.  In fact I counted just one person buying anything in two hours.  So desperate were they that at one stage they started distributing free drinks in order to entice customers in!”
Our christian Zionist tries to figure out how to use a camera phone - whilst dragging round her poor dog

Picture of all 4 main Zionists - the one farthest from the camera  tried to act the heavy, the 2 middle ones are the Christian Fundies and the one nearest the camera likes to proclaim that there is no ethnic cleansing (& also  pigs can fly!)
There was not only a very good turnout of Brighton PSC supporters, but lots of people actually joined in spontaneously after being given leaflets.  The stall was always busy.  This is even more remarkable since PSC was also running a stall at the clocktower as well!
2 of the many leafleters from PSC

There were just 4 main pro-Zionist supporters trying to harass the main demonstrators – two of whom, as is nearly always the case now – were Christian Fundamentalists.  It would appear that one form of bigot attracts another.   They seemed to spend most of their time engaged in conversation with the Police along the lines of ‘why are you allowing this protest’.  Christian bigots don’t seem to like free speech and beliefs that differ from their own. These Christian fundamentalists only support Zionism as a means of getting the Jews to go to Israel in order to hasten the 2nd coming of Christ, when most Jews will perish in the fires of Armageddon!
The Christian Zionist Leaflet - Does Our Work for Us!
They professed themselves concerned with ‘anti-Semitism’.  I was even told that I was a ‘Jewish self-hater’ to which I replied ‘no.  It’s you I hate!’  In Nazi Germany the same Christian Fundies set up the German Reich Church to distance themselves from the idea that Christianity & Jesus were Jewish.  If you think I’m being a somewhat severe, in comparing Bishop Muller to today’s Christian bigots, have a look at the video below.  This is Pastor John Hagee, President of Christians United for Israel, the most powerful pro-Zionist movement in the United States.  Hitler was appointed by god no less, to hunt down the Jews and send them to Palestine.  This is the kind of madman (& woman!) that these Christian bigots represent.  Anti-Semitic to the core.  They even put out a leaflet, which apart from being almost wholly inaccurate and racist, contradicts itself within 2 sentences – there was never a place called Palestine and then tells us that the Roman Emperor Hadrian called the land Palaestina.  Such is the sophistication of the Christian bigot!
2 distinctly annoyed Zionists on the left
But at least they don’t pretend in 2 states.  The Palestinians were occupying Israel.  There isn’t even a Palestinian language.  In fact there isn’t an Israeli language either!  Hebrew was recreated by the Zionist settlers.  And of course they make no distinction between Jews, Israel and Zionism. the non-Christian Zionists tried getting physical at one stage but backed off when he was caught out.  One of the Christian Zionists dragged round her dog on a leash.  It was difficult to tell which was the dumb mutt!
Sodastream's premises used to be a Post Office before becoming a place where you could buy stolen goods

But Brighton Police, who have earned themselves a reputation for their hostility to protests and demonstrations, did their best to harass the demonstration, threatening, without any justification, to arrest anyone using the megaphone towards the end.  They’d had some complaints – most of which came from the Zionists.  But it didn’t matter much as we simply began chanting, which further annoyed them.
Our regular Palestine stall does better business than Ecostream!

They arrived in force with a police minibus and another car, but however many police came they couldn’t beautify a shop that sells stolen goods and trades in the products of ethnic cleansing.
The police were out in force - looking for an excuse to stop the protest

The Zionists’ leaflet also used what I call the Hitler defence.  Israel has invented your micro-chip and mobile phone.  All nonsense as these are US companies or their Israeli subsidiaries operating under license.  But this is a familiar argument which says that whatever else he did, at least Hitler built the autobahns and made the trains run on time etc.
Sodastream’s shop is understood to be on a short 6 months lease.  We hope to make it even shorter.

Israeli Settlers 'Desecrate Christian Monastery'

Another attack on a non-Jewish religious organisation, this time a Christian monastry.  Usually it is mosques which are the target for vandalism and destruction, but in the eyes of Jewish zealots from the West Bank settlements and the religious Orthodox, the original evil was Christian.

As normal the Israeli police will investigate and as normal they will not be able to find the culprits.  Unsurprisingly since the Israeli military arm and train and many of the armed settlers are themselves part of the army units stationed nearby.

Israelis evicted from an illegal settlement are believed to be behind an arson and graffiti attack on a Christian monastery.

Israeli police are investigating after vandals attacked a famous Christian monastery - setting fire to its door and spray-painting "Jesus is a monkey" on the wall.

The Latrun Monastery, on occupied land in the Ayalon Valley, 15 miles west of Jerusalem, was daubed with pro-settler graffiti.
Officers believe it was in possible retaliation for the eviction of 50 families from the nearby unauthorised Migron settlement on Sunday.

Migron, near the West Bank city of Ramallah, was cleared after an Israeli court ruled it had been illegally built on Palestinian land.
The settlers left the area quietly and moved to temporary housing at another settlement, but eight youths who protested were arrested.

Police were warning of possible reprisal attacks from a vigilante settler group known as Price Tag. The group says its name refers to the price to be paid for stopping settlement in the occupied West Bank.

They have targeted mosques and, less commonly, Christian churches in the past.

Father Paul Saouma, the monastery's abbot, looked dazed as he inspected the damage. "Not nice. What can I say? What can I say?" he said.

An Israeli rabbi visiting the Trappist monastery called the attack an "ugly event".

"As a rabbi and as an Israeli citizen I am ashamed today, and I am deeply troubled by the fact that this is not the first time that such an event takes place in Israel, " said Rabbi Gilad Kariv, head of Reform Judaism in Israel.
"We need to make sure that the other faiths, other communities, feel secure here."

The monastery is located on land Israel captured in 1967. The United Nations says all Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal.

Israel disputes this and distinguishes between about 120 settlements it has sanctioned and another 100 built by settlers without authorisation.

Some 500,000 Israelis now live on occupied land, nearly all of them in east Jerusalem or the West Bank.

Quisling Palestinian Authority Imprisons Freedom Theatre's Zakaria Zubeidi for 4 Months

Founder of Jenin’s Freedom Theatre Threatens Hunger Strike to Death

The Freedom Theatre in Jenin, a symbol of Palestinian culture, saw its artistic director, Juliano Meir-Khamis murdered by unknown assassins last year.  Almost certainly the work of Israel and PA, both have used the murder to further harass the Freedom Theatre.

Zubeidi has been imprisoned, without trial for nearly 4 months by the Israeli owned and funded quisling Palestinian Authority of Abbas.

This is the context in which a cultural boycott of Israel is being advocated in Britain against groups like Batsheva.

Freedom Theatre Calls for Action for Zakaria Zubeidi

WEDNESDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER 2012 18:39 FREEDOM THEATRE
On the 9th of September Zakaria Zubeidi announced that he will embark on a death fast, a complete food and fluid strike, in response to the continuous postponement of his release from Palestinian Authority prison. This effectively means that unless the Palestinian Authority releases Zakaria he will most probably not make it through the week.

Zubeidi, co-founder of The Freedom Theatre and former leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, has been imprisoned by the Palestinian Authority for close to four months. No charges have been made against him, no evidence presented and throughout his imprisonment his rights have been severely violated, as described by among others Human Rights Watch.

Being one of the last survivors of Arna's Children, Zakaria joined the armed resistance during the second Intifada and became one of its leading figures. After co-founding The Freedom Theatre in 2006 Zakaria decided to lay down his weapons in order to join a cultural resistance, which he deemed a more powerful tool against the Israeli occupation. Surviving numerous assassination attempts by the Israeli army and vowing to never again enter an Israeli prison, Zakaria is now instead facing death in a Palestinian prison unless immediate action is taken.

SAMPLE LETTER

To [Name], representative of the Palestinian Authority

I am a staunch supporter of the Palestinian people and therefore I am now contacting you on an urgent matter. It has come to my knowledge that Zakaria Zubeidi, co-founder of The Freedom Theatre in Jenin and former military leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades has been kept in Palestinian prison for over four months without any charges or accusations brought against him. I have also been informed that Zakaria's human rights have been violated on several accounts and that as a result he has started a death fast, refusing water or food. That means that he will die within 8-10 days and most probably before that suffer irreversible effects to his health. I urge you to take immediate actions for Zakaria's release. If you, as a representative of the Palestinian Authority will allow Zakaria to die then you must also know that I and many others will consider you partly responsible for his death.

I trust that you understand the need for your immediate response to this case.

Sincerely Yours,
